My thoughts on this subject, I have played in PS3 and now in PS4. I started without a mic on PS3 because i was to lazy to set it up. Once i started grinding i set up my mic and friended people. Do you really need mic?
1. It helps to establish a friendly relation with other players (this is a key if you need someone to carry you)
2. I joke around all the time because that is what me and my friends do, and teabagging with music
3. I NEVER talk about strategy (very rarely we would talk about DAMP issues)
4. I ask PUGS what they were thinking knowing they would just leave, once in a rare while a PUG would message back or talk back and it would actually begin a discussion
5. Most PUGS the mic is only for "there is a mage/warrior/rogue door!", "&@^#*", blasting their radio in the background (i would end up muting them)
6. On PS4 we jump into a party chat for audio so some PUG would be talking and I would never even know
7. We do say useful thing like change the map, change the difficulty setting, i don't have anything but level 1s
To end the thought, you don't really need it but it helps establish and solidify the relationship with friends or help start one. The gameplay with frequent team mates are pretty automatic. I think the need for it over-rated but if you need friends then it is very helpful to establish yourself as someone more than a PUG.
