So from my understanding I thought only the Magisters of the City were the only talking dark spawn but in the Hurlock Alpha codex it tells of a story of a talking darkspawn they captured. The Lord Varron in the story called him a hurlock alpha but I just thought the only darkspawn that could speak were the Magisters.

Anyone know of some regular darkspawn can talk as well? Or did they capture and kill a Magister?

I suspect the Darkspawn in the codex is one of the one's the Architect did experiments with.

The Lore goes back and forth on the subject of talking Darkspawn.

in DA:O the codexes indicated that Emissaries were known to talk, indeed that was why they were called Emissaries and not Darkspawn mages or whatever.

Then in DA:A they retconned that out so that the Disciples being talking Darkspawn was this unprecedented thing and the Architect was some one-of-a-kind anomaly.

Then they retconned the Architect into a Magister, and established the Magisters were actually the original talking Darkspawn.

Now there are codexes in DA:I that indicate Alphas can talk.

Personally I liked the notion that the Darkspawn don't talk. Not can't, just don't. They feel no need to communicate with non-tainted beings, just an urge to slaughter them.

The Blighted Codex also references a talking emissary, who taunts a woman before tearing her throat out with its teeth.

The darkspawn have always had the ability to speak; most of them are just too bestial and savage to do so. That said, there is the odd darkspawn born who is smarter than its fellows; the Grey Wardens tend to hunt these darkspawn down as soon as they learn of them.
