Is an elf more enjoyable story/lore-wise?

My question was not about models but about lore. I know elves look like..what they are... but I assure you of two things:

1 - My Qunari mage doesn't know ANYTHING about Qunaris. Official reason is "he's a Vashot"...oh well...can't you even speak YOUR native language?

2 - Try romancing someone with a Qunari... mine looked like a golem in love with a pixie...

So.. that said, if elves look a bit awkward but have a deeper story and/or connection with what happens I'll be happy to roll one. Question is: Mage again (maybe different) or Sniper?

I thought likewise... so I was a Qunari mage, Fire/Lightning. I'd like to change something now, as I went around with solas, and would like to change now, and be the only mage..

My Lavellan is a Lightning/Spirit Knight-Enchanter, which allows for a good mixture of crowd control, AOE death to enemies, and protection/healing of party members.

Hi bowie, how do you fare without fire? Don't you loose much offense power?

I think the first half of the base game is suited for a male/female mage.  The second half is all about the female mage/Solas romance and lore bonanza.

I cast Static Cage first, then spam basic attacks until I have enough stamina to cast Chain Lightning, and then follow it up with Energy Barrage. If they close in, I start swatting whoever's getting in my face with Spirit Blade until they die or go after a different target, and then repeat the cycle. And thanks to the Fade-Touched Obsidian in my staff I'm building up stupid amounts of Guard while doing so.

Meanwhile, if any of my companions is taking too much damage I drop a Barrier on them, and toss a healing grenade if they're particularly badly off. It may not put enemies down as fast as if I'd spec'd Fire, but it gets the job done.

Thanks bowie, appreciate it. Just one more question, which also relates to what Homer said: I've already been mage, even if not elf, so I'd like to change. In your experience, do you feel that I'd miss much lore if I swap to archer? Would like to try something new... Does being an ELVEN mage open up more dialogues than with a Qunari, as I was?

I've only played a Mage in DAI, so I don't know. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful there.

No problem, I'm in your same position :)

Honestly I felt the elven lore exposition dump in the game worked better for any race other than elf, than for elves themselves. All the lore is presented in the writing as information dumps and slightly condescending explanations given to someone who doesn't know squat about elven culture (and that's including the base game and all the revelations in Hakkon and Trespasser), which makes your Dalish Inquisitor sound really ignorant about their own culture, but completely makes sense for non-elves. I really didn't enjoy my Dalish playthrough half as much as my human, dwarf and qunari ones, because I kept feeling like an idiot for sounding so surprised by things I should already know. Yes, you do get dialogue options for playing an elf, but you get that for every race, and at least when you're not an elf it actually makes sense to go about saying who's this, what's that, why is this so important, oooh wow this is a big revelation, etc.

Also, unrelated to the lore dump - try as I might, I really couldn't get over the cognitive dissonance in the entirety of Thedas discriminating elves, treating them worse than trash, etc, but suddenly kings and empresses and princes are bowing to an elf and calling her "Your Grace" and obeying her whims... it was just weird, in the end. The same people who were throwing "knife-ear" around to the servants were bending knee and bowing their heads to another knife-ear because...??? Because she says so? It never really added up. At least with a dwarf you have the factor that nobody really cares about what dwarves do or don't around Thedas, and with a qunari you have the factor that they're big and scary and nobody really wants to say no to a giant oxman. But the game's writing in general is clearly geared up to a human protagonist (as it was originally, before they added the other races), and even with touch ups like unique race dialogue for elves, dwarves and qunari, I never really got over that feeling that the game expects you to be human and thus very impressed with all this foreign stuff about other races and cultures you don't really know much about, all these revelations that seem very game-changing but never really do change anything for you in the short term.

Just thought I'd mention that the most obvious example of your Elf-Quizzie derping out about their own lore (with Morrigan at the Temple of Mythal) can be modded if you play on PC:

http://www.nexusmods...tion/mods/638/?

Hopefully your elf won't sound as jarringly ignorant with this.

Though I should also add that the mod cannot distinguish between an elf and a non-elf Inquisitor. So install it if you're playing an elf, and uninstall it otherwise.

I believe so. An Elf Inquisitor vs Solas just feels more personal when it's an Elf trying to stop an Elf Supermacist because they can be seen as each others counterparts. Fan'Harel vs. the Dalish Elf just sounds right.

I kind of agree, Holmes (though I'm spoiler-blocking the whole damn thing, to be kind).

Don't do that to yourself. Stick with master race human, or tolerated race dwarf.

Why so? Is it that bad?

Fair enough. But since I've been playing from the first, I'd like there to be a difference between a human and a knife-ears....y'know..
