I agree with all of this so much. Very well expressed and thought out points. People who criticize the critical/disappointed players say "if you don't like it, stop posting here." But for me, and from my impression of your post, we vocalize our criticism because we're so passionate about the franchise and Bioware's potential; there really aren't other games like Dragon Age in the current market. The criticism is not just to whine and moan, but to point out areas where we felt let down when Bioware has previously proven that they can do better. We WANT Bioware to succeed and do better, we don't want to have them fail and dance in their ashes. Tough love is still love!

Exactly, this is how I feel as well. BioWare's pre-DA2 games (and SWtoR) are my favorites. No other company comes close to making the same type and quality of games and I feel like in recent years they're throwing away what made them special to me in order to attract a larger audience (CoD players, Skyrim players, JRPG players, etc...) :(

I would not say that DAI was a failure cause it did get good reviews and apparently it was Bioware's most successful launch title despite us not knowing the metrics behind "most successful" and it did sweep the  2014 GOTY awards despite that year not being all strong as 2015's lineup or 2013's lineup was.

Either way, DAI is not a failure. What I would say it is...is a game that came out strong out of the gate. It was the first AAA RPG Next Gen title which added to it's lure and made it a novelty. However as the months went on by and the GOTY awards were given....the honeymoon period ended and a segment of DAI owners began to notice many short-comings such as:

- Limited Cutscenes

- Uninspiring Sidequest

- Uninspiring Villain

- Monotone Protagonist (Not in term of voice, but personality variances available to us)

- Gameplay that is build around exploration instead of narrative

- Open Worlds that weren't as immersive

- Too much "tell but don't show" mechanics used such as reading letters on dead bodies, notes, journals etc to tell a story or set a mood rather than just putting us in that mood/story as it happens.

- Poor PC support

- Was held back by 360/PS3 and didn't live up to original scope (Think leaked PAX 2013 video).

Of course not EVERYONE shares these opinions cause there are MANY who disagree and enjoy the game, but there are also MANY who agree and either didn't enjoy the game at at or enjoyed the game, but not as much as they wanted to.

Either way, Bioware will take all feedback especially the negative feedback and apply that to DA4. My only saving grace is that DA4 will not be a carbon-copy of DAI and perhaps with the popularity of TW3 (Financial and critical success | has higher review scores than DAI), Bioware will take some inspiration from them (sidequest/open world) when crafting DA4.......assuming we get a DA4.

BioWare's kind of known for wanting to gain inspiration from something successful without knowing what people actually liked about those super popular games and just totally missing the mark (as well as neglecting their own strengths in the process). If BioWare decides to "take inspiration" from TW3, it won't be by making side quests interesting and fun, NPCs interesting, well developed and relevant to the plot, etc...No, DA4 will have your character forced to have white hair, and will include a fistfighting mini game. :pinched:

Excellent post!!! Agree 100%.

I just would like to add that if Bioware will ever be allow to bring another DA game (most probably in a distant future), please make sure you hire the right person to direct and coordinate the pc platform of the game. One that had played at least once during the development process with a keyboard/mouse, unlike the guy they used this time who confessed on one of the threads here that he never, ever touched a k/m during the entire process of developing DAI (that explains a lot). The development of the pc platform for DAI was shameful mess.

Wait bioware employees show up on the forums?

In combat maybe, but that doesn't interest me. Story interests me, characters interest me, choices and roleplaying options interest me and SWtOR has all of that in spades. WoW couldn't hold my interest for more than a day.

Really why should devs show up on the forums. See crap like this and they may say screw it and get out of the gaming business

I've played both before. I found the story to be more engaging and enjoyable in TOR than in WoW. At launch and early days, TOR was better compared to WoW's launch and early days, but WoW has had more time to add stuff.

WoW is just a clone of Everquest or [insert other previous fantasy MMO title here].

Anyway, back on topic:

Different opinions, different interests. Overall, I thought the game was a success and really opened up the world of Thedas for me. ME had the cooler cinematics, JE had the best villain, and KotOR had a more engaging plot (with having a better PC personal story arc), but Inquisition was still a good game.

I said "bioware employee" not dev. And because there should be some form of connection/community. And if there can't be then why have the forums?
Up until Lady insanity interview I didn't know not only that bioware had a community manager but the forums told me like 2-3 months back that that one chick wasn't the manager anymore. >.>

DAO rating 9/10

inqustion rating 8.8-9/10

dragon age 2 rating 8.5/10

I don't think any of the games in this series can be called a failure

If I had to rate because sometimes I am in a mood to rate things.

DA O: 7.8

DA A 8.6

DA 2: 8.4

DA I: 9.6

And then just for fun. :P

ME 1: 8.8

ME 2: 9.4

ME 3 9.0

And probably before Trespasser I would have given DA I a 9.4 or 3.

Having rating 7-9 is ridiculously easy to achieve (sadly) as long game isn't total waste or didn't anger players (mass effect 3) even if game is average game will end with pretty much with 8-9 .

Besides from what i see you use IGN ratings who are mocked for their ratings.

Gamespot didn't even review Trespasser, and they said"Why I Can't Wait for The Witcher 3's New Expansion"

then I knew their attitude toward dragon age inquisition

Actually I used the ratings that appeared when I looked on Google I also picked randomly out of the 3 rateings that appeared but if it makes you feel better I will include them all

DAO 4.5/5, 9/10, 4/5   (metric / ign / EA)

DA2 4.5, 8.5/10, 8/10  (metric / ign / gamestop)

DAI  9/10, 4/5, 8.8/10  (gamestop / metric /ign)

Well ,as i said games are greatly overrated even if they are average those ratings are proof. ;)

Was DAI a failure?  I think by most objective measures it wasn't.  However, I think it's safe to say now (at least IMHO) that DAI is a mile wide and an inch deep.  That is to say that it's first impression was really, really good (less so for me than others but I digress), but as one played more and more of it, it's shortcomings became more and more noticable.  I still think that DAI as 2014 GOTY was a complete joke but that's not the same as calling it a failure.

So what happened since last year?  Frankly (and I know this will anger some here), Witcher 3 came along, beat DAI up and stole it's lunch money.  For a lot of CRPG enthusiasts (esp old school ones), Witcher 3 was everything that DAI promised to be only better.

Just my take.

LOL, if SWTOR is better then why does it turn to F2P game while WoW doesn't and Bioware Austin suffers layoff during early days. Seriously, everything is a rip-off.

Failure is a opinionated word in most cases.. I happen to like DA:I but, I hate the fine print since I don't have Elven vision and because of that I will probably play it two or three times a year.  As far as DA:I being the last I heard that about Final Fantasy many years ago.

When I buy a game I judge it on its own merits not by other games or what others may think of the game and that has worked for me for years.

This very post indicates that I am not wrong.  How much have you heard of DAI since Witcher 3 came out?  That alone says volumes.

I think the fact that W3 dropped seven months or so after DAI might have something to do with that. The gaming press tends to move on.
