Highest base axe damage in the game is the Dragon Hunter Axe with 280 base damage.Highest base damage in the game is the Stone Breaker, a maul with 360 base damage.Like all high-end uniques, it's a good weapon overall. It hits like a bus, but it's hard to fully use its capacities unlike a custom-made crafted axe with a bajillion slots due to a stupid bug.
wrong!!
That axe has 223-230 damage (depends when you find/buy)
Best axe is Swift Greataxe which damage is 284-295 (requires jaws of hakkon)
Mauls
most damage is in Avvar war-maul and it's 318-325
In "The Discent" there is a better maul but with no upgrade slots and i think that the loss of %attack is not worth.
Schematics
I have crafted an axe that has less damage but it's much better that the Swift. 279 damage but 40% attack and 24% critical chance.Weapons crafted are better than the ones we can find so let's say that axe has the same damage of mauls
I was wondering the same things but abuot 1h weapon...why should i use a sword and not an axe or mace??

The rated DPS is lower at the same base damage due to the slower swing speed. If you animation cancel the auto attacks, the DPS is identical. DPS numbers aren't really used for anything. Pick the schematic that has the better ancillary slots when the damage slot is identical.
So DPS isn't indicative of anything in DAI? That was always the big factor in the DAO gameplay discussions, particularly for rogues or DW warriors whose daggers didn't do as much damage but came on so fast as to exceed more powerful weapons in total dam output in a given period of time. In any case, how do I "animation cancel?" I see no reason mauls should be slower than other huge 2H weapons other than to arbitrarily make a sort of pecking order among weapons. Is it a setting in the Options? I'm not finding anything.

Honestly, if playing a reaver, you do not need to worry much about weapon speed at all, so you can use whatever weapon look you want. Remember if crafting you need the right amount AND tier (22 tier 1 materials will always do less damage than 22 tier 4) and that most of the time, materials in the first slot is not important as to WHAT exactly the material is (everite and silverite are both tier 3, and thus the first slot will give the same damage for both). Most tend to just throw in the highest tier and forget that the tiers mean something.

Yeah, I've been preferring the axe/mace to sword most of the time for the better DPS unless I have a schematic for masterwork sword at a higher tier. Besides, the handaxe is so deliciously vicious in combat too. >:-)

Secondary effects mean nothing? I would use what provides the best secondary effects even if the damage is not that great. That is what the party is for anyways.

I'm not that wrong, you know.
I was talking about that crafted axe when I said Dragon Hunter axe. The point is to compare the best Axe overall (Bugged Crafted Axe of the Dragon Hunter, which has about 280 (279 to be precise) base damage, T4 slots AND upgrades, with the best "high base damage" Maul overall, which is the Stone Breaker, however you put it.
The fully upgraded Avvar War Maul will give you about 18% more attack with 324 base damage, the Stone Breaker will give you 353 base damage. Naked, that's an overall 54 additional damage, and yes, a 0 strength warrior with an avvar war maul will deal more damage than a 0 strength warrior with a stone breaker. Now things are not taken in a vaccuum, and with the same self-buffs, accessories and armor, the Stone Breaker will easily outdamage the Avvar War Maul, because Maths. Even without taking into account the masterwork, which by itself is a free +30% damage bonus (10% chance on hit to deal an additional 300% damage).
Now this discussion can get back on track. The whole point is whether you want to use a crit build that exploits a bugged schematic, or an attack build that uses the Stone Breaker. And I personally think people are dismissing uniques too quickly without thinking, because of this bugged schematic.
Crafted items are nice to support a character build
Uniques can be good if you build the character around them

When I solo I prefer swords (unique or crafted) for damage by a fairly large margin. Armor on trash mobs just destroys one-handed maces and axes, and turns seconds into minutes. I tend to switch weapon a lot depending on what I'm facing though, so there's that.

another thing to keep in mind is that weapons with more attacks speed will make you apply more "on hi" like "guard on hit",1% heal on hit" and if you have a 10% chance to activate something you need average 10 hits to get 1 activation. and you make 10 hits faster if you use axes and greaswords
