I'd like to know that too. Weren't we supposed to craft a sword handle before choosing Knight Enchanter? That Blade of Tidarion should be for Knight Enchanters. There's a Knight-Enchanter Greatsword but mages can't use it!

^^ right now, the Blade of Tidarion IS for mages.  It's a staff but it's wielded like a 2h greatsword.

I'm just questioning if that is indeed how the weapon was intended ( if so, GREAT!! ).  or if it's an unfortunate bug ( meaning it could get patched out ) set to tease us who want to play as full melee mages.......lol.

and I agree.  This Tidarion blade IS what Spirit Blade should have been.  not a spell but an actual weapon we can craft and wield like a sword.

I hope this is a sign of what's to come in future DA games.  I've always felt that Mages should get more than one weapon style like Warriors and Rogues do.

And this elemental blade sword should be the 2nd weapon style for mages who want to be melee focused.  An actual weapon with an actual skill tree.  And staves for range combat should get their own staff skill tree.

hopefully, it's something they implement in the next DA game.

I found the operations for both Griffon Robes and Mail, but Griffon Plate eludes me.

That's good. I'm planning on re-playing my Mage Inquisitor with the Golden Nug and re-farming masterwork items. I usually hog the good stuff from my other mages, especially Vivienne.  ;)

It seems they've been experimenting in MP; buff mages, an elemental warrior and a rogue-warrior hybrid. Hopefully we'll see some of that in the next game's SP.

Not going to lie: after seeing the Wrath of Lovias, I'm not really impressed with either the Blade of Tidarion or the Encore. Admittedly, I don't know what materials give a lot of Attack boost, but it's hard to beat the massive boost to Crit Chance that the Wrath of Lovias gets. Though I do get that DoT doesn't Crit, so Necromancers aren't particularly impressed with the Wrath of Lovias.

I think it's awesome for a play style of playing pure melee...drop ice and fire mines in front of you...swing away...SB for fun....toss on the ring of doubt, and it's like a whole brand new game for a KE

Sorry. Should have clarified: I was talking mechanically. Thematically, it's pretty nice (though I wish it was a one-handed sword instead of a two-handed), but from a mechanics perspective, it's not particularly impressive next to the Wrath of Lovias. It's pretty hard to beat 20 Leather Offense slots.

Here. Provides categories, so look at all the base (anything not marked masterwork) types.

Encore is a hell of a staff

Found this schematic from running the war table mission "Stop War between Nevarra and Tevinter".  I do not know if this came with 1.10 or Trespasser.  But it is really cool.  I have an image of the schematic and some animations of the attack.

Just wanted to add, I looted the actual item "Blade of Tidarion" from the astrarium chest in Crestwood last night.

Equipped Solas with it for the heck of it and even though I'm playing nightmare and we're level 18 and the item is underleveled for him technically, seems the coolness factor is coming into play cus I swear he's actually doing better with this than he did with the on-level lightning staff I had him using before that had higher DPS.

Also, the item you loot from the astrarium chest has a nice little story in its description.

thanks!

that's encouraging to hear.

also, does this Tidarion Blade always have the "lightning" elemental blade look?

can you change it to a "flaming" elemental blade by applying a flame rune to it?

and what element does the blade trigger when you use Energy Barrage?

it has whatever element the stones you use to build it has.

also of note, it can't have spirit runes on it, cause it is technically a greatsword. so you can make a fire sword, with a fire rune, if thats what you wanted to do.

Wrath of Lovias is pretty damn good.  I don't personally like the look very much, but you can load up on Crit Chance/Damage with it.  Encore is capable of being slightly better (Edit: Actually it looks like Lovias is better if you use Archon Staff Blade instead of Dragon Staff Blade, and load up on Dex in armor utility slots - thanks actionhero112) due to the increased slots, and also the buff procs are very nice.

If you use Wrath of Lovias, it's best to use other gear (armor/accessories) for Attack.  If you use Encore (including Dragon Webbing in one of the Cloth slots for Crit Dmg), you use other gear for Crit Chance.  They end up not being too different if you balance them out that way, except for the Encore buffs.

[Edit] Btw, I believe the current best options for Offense slots for mages are:

Cloth: 1.75% Attack (Plush Fustian Velvet/King's Willow Weave) OR 3.5% Crit Damage (Dragon Webbing)

Leather: 2% Crit Chance (Ice Dragon Hide) OR 3.5% Crit Damage (Imbued Tusket Hide)

Metal: 2% Attack (Ice Dragon Bone)

Note, the game rounds up, so for example a 3-Cloth slot gives 1.75 * 3 = 5.25 -> 6% Attack, just as it would if there existed a 2% Attack cloth material.

Unfortunately, I don't think there are enough Ice Dragon materials in game to make more than one weapon...

So Blade of Tidarion and Encore are basically more Attack-oriented, while Wrath of Lovias is more Crit-oriented. I can definitely see the usefulness of that. I'm still not all that used to materials; the only thing I knew off-hand was that Leather Offense = Crit. I wasn't aware of how much Attack these weapons could get. They've just jumped up significantly in my estimation. My apologies for dismissing them.

As an avid KE fan. I'd say the the blade is really bad.

This is because its a question of Gathering Storm VS Clean Burn, with a sub question of Great sword animations VS Staff antimation.

So first Staff VS Great sword. Both Staff and Great sword combat animations using my method of timing take about 5.3 seconds (i'm counting all attacks, and the reset between rotations). ALso Gathering Storm only cares about the preforming of an attack and that it has a target, and not the  actual hitting of a target. (basicly number of targets hit or the 3 prog attack of the last staff auto don't matter). So how many attacks are in each rotation??

Sword does 4, and the staff does 6. So staff gets more out of Gathering storm??

How about Clean Burn vs. Staff??/

Well in 3.9 seconds you go through a whole Spirit blade rotation. That's 3 attacks. Do alittle math and you'll find staff is the cooldown reset king.

another test?? Have a KE spam spirit blade, and another mage in your part spam autos, after using the pause to cast a spell on both characters at the same time.

Also damage wise staff auto attacks do slightly more damage than an unamplified spirit blade attack per second. Though this isn't so much, but if crits are what you seek than you have more chances to crit with autos, and those autos wont accidently comsume your flash point ^.^.

Edit: sword is still quite cool though reguardless ^.^, oh also the amount of time you loose switching from spirit sword to auto attacks.... is really really long.... So i ususaly just stick to the spirit sword.

Sword cleaves and does AoE. IE several at once with no limit other than mob size

I fully agree this is probably the best Necromancer staves. But I want crit on Rift Mages as I'm cooldown limited. I need more critical hits. I won't comment on Knight Enchanters as they seem in a bit of a flux at the moment.

the blade or the encore staff for a necromancer?

To my understanding spirit blade also cleaves, and does the same damage (if you never use other abilities). While also giving you more cooldowns reduction than GS auto attacks would.

Ok so I'm all but determined to mainline this for my next playthrough, but from what I'm seeing throughout the threat, KE might not be the best idea. Sure it's a good idea, but perhaps something else. So I'm wondering, what sort of mage build would match up really well with this? I'm thinking maybe Rift mage with ice magic.

Maybe a fire necromancer? With the new toggle upgrades you got the tools to make it work potentially. Mindblast for CC cleansing, Alternate Versions of Firewall and Fire MIne for close range damage, along with Walking Bomb (single target) for high damage and Spirit Mark (wisps) for more ranged support, while using simulacrum/heal on hit to stay immortal.

I'm actually considering it myself. I got an early necromancer save I left on the backburner after setting them up in skyhold.

KE does it best because you can actually stay in melee and have mechanics that protect you, but that said spirit blade is a better melee option. THe sword is nnice ebcuase it doesn't cost mana, but it's extremely cluncky switching from spirit blade attacks to autos. It literally forces you to wait for the sword to disappear until you can start auto attacking.

This can be fixed by throwing some other spell in between to get around this but..... it's still annoying.  Or do the whole spirit blade 3 hit combo.

If you want it to work KE is your best bet, i just don't know how you'd implement it.
