I just noticed under my options that there is a new entry called "Trials".  Curious I went to check it out.  It has TREMENDOUS potential to deal with the scaling issues in the game.

I'll list them here.

Even Ground:  Enemies always scale to be at least the same level as the Inquisitor.  Significantly increases the chance of receiving special shipment rewards in your stronghold.

Walk Softly:  The enemies of the Inquisition may have new traits and abilities in combat.  Significantly increases the chance of receiving special shipment rewards in your stronghold.

Rest Easy:  You lose all focus if you rest or travel to a camp.  Slightly increases the chance of receiving special shipment rewards in your stronghold.

Rub Some Dirt On It:  All healing potions heal only 1 health.  Significantly increases the chance of receiving special shipment rewards in your stronghold.

Travel Light:  All supply caches are removed from the game.  Slightly increases the chance of receiving special shipment rewards in your stronghold.

Take it Slow:  You gain xp at half the normal rate.  Slightly increase the chance of receiving special shipment rewards in your stronghold.

Fair-weather friends:  Negative Approval Changes for your followers are doubled.  Slightly increases the chance of receiving special shipment rewards in your stronghold.

Grizzly End:  You thought bears were tough?  Think again!  Significantly increases the chance of receiving special shipment rewards in your stronghold.

These are toggle-able (must be the new buzz word for Devs at Bioware).  You can have more than one.

The only one that looks troubling to me is Rub Some Dirt on It.

Might make those DLC's on nightmare a pain.

I plan to start a playthrough and cut my xp in half.  Plus going back to lower level areas where things are leveled might be very interesting.  On top of that, who knows what they mean by the trail "Walk Softly".  It could be the enemies get more unique abilities that could cause quick wipes.  Hard to cast fast judgment on something never tried before or thoroughly defined.  ;)

These look pretty interesting, especially Even Ground (no more totally outleveling zones, do them in any order) with the half-xp one.  I wonder what the "special shipment rewards" are?

Not sure what the rewards are, or even where to find them.  But, I am testing out 3 trials on my level 16 RM.

Even Ground: enemies scale with you

Walk Softly:  enemies have new special abilities

Travel Light:  remove supply caches (I hate them anyways)

If I reroll (which I intend to do with a rogue) I'll also enable Take it Slow and probably Grizzly End.

Grizzly End reminds me of Skyrim.  The bears were harder than the dragons.  lawl.

I like walk softly, always felt enemies needed more abilities.

Walk softly may look a bit like Heartbreaker mode from mp but I have not tried it in single player yet.

It's lots of tactical fun. Enemy warriors get abilities like grappling chain and pommel strike. Enemy rogues get stun effects which stun your whole party. Enemy archers get confusion arrows and leaping shotlol. Enemy mages get fade cloak dispel and something like stone fist.

Perfect, as this is what i wanted for harder fights, more AI abilities not more HP bloat.

That sounds great. Bioware has never spiced up the combat in a previosly released game before as far as I know, but boy did this game need it.

Started a new playthrough with everything on and what I noticed is that instead of the rogue enemies "popping behind you leaving you enough time to evade the backstab" they stun you so they can land the backstab without a stun cleanse or companion help.

With everything on it is refreshengly challenging on nightmare. Only downside so far is that although I received a message for a special delivery the chest is empty at Haven. Maybe it's only working post-Skyhold.

Remember in the lead-up to DAI when they said "Guys, toggles aren't as simple to implement as you think"? Now it's "TOGGLES FOR EVERYTHING!"
Not that I'm complaining. I'm particularly ecstatic about Walk Softly and the new ability upgrades.

Those are indeed some very interesting modes. I played a bit in the secret oasis with some of them on and noticed some animals (hyenas and spiders) that had the elite status. While hovering above them in tactic mode you could see that they were promoted (probably through walk slowly but maybe grizzly end is for all animals?). The promoted spider had the additional ability "barrier breaker" for example. I like it. Makes it so that before combat you should check if enemies are promoted and have dangerous abilities. Now i just would like to know what these special shipments are since im still at haven :).

So it is a bit like the elite mp mode. Just wait untill you encounter a venetori mage who fade cloaks for 5 sec every 6 seconds. Really annoying half the time they are totally immune to everything.

At low levels (pre-Skyhold) these are compensated by the fact that you have access to high-tier equipment with the golden nug.

I just fought an elite Nug outside of Haven that had more health than a great bear! Lol, Walk Softly may be OP.

So do you actually get new or different items in the special shipments chest?

I don't even know where the special shipment chest is located.  However, I'd use these trials even if the shipments never showed up.  The game is simply too easy.

I'm curious to what you guys think about the interaction between:

Even Ground:  Enemies always scale to be at least the same level as the Inquisitor.  Significantly increases the chance of receiving special shipment rewards in your stronghold.

Take it Slow:  You gain xp at half the normal rate.  Slightly increase the chance of receiving special shipment rewards in your stronghold.

Having both on means you will progress through your levels slowers and thus your opponents will be weaker (and your gear will be stronger relatively in comparison to the your enemies). I suppose I'm just wondering if just Even Ground will be harder then Even Ground + Take it Slow. What do you think?

I think that unless you impose your own limits on crafting, the game will still be too easy.  A lowbie with a tier 4 dagger is...well....godly.

The healing trial (Rub some dirt on it) also applies to Regeneration Potions.

I just soloed Corypheus at 27 on Nightmare with all Trials on, just so you guys don't have to. Trials are for the early/mid game and for preventing you to reach the end game, not for characters at the level cap with T4 everything. At this point, Cory and his dragon are still glorified target dummies, with a fair bit more health than I remembered, but still struggling to deal any sort of damage to you.

An elite... nug? By "fought," I assume you mean "chased it all over Haven until it disappeared at one of the world transitions"? Or do nugs now have offensive abilities?

Nugs can now cast full draw with their own feces from stealth.

I am planning on starting a new character with the 1/2 xp.  It'll be interesting to see how much trouble I'll have trying to be at a reasonable level for the relevant story missions and DLC on nightmare, with a craft-limited run.  Could be painful.

This isn't just if I buy the DLC, right? I can access it otherwise, I hope.
