So, it appears they watered down the previous armor and weapon system. As far as I can tell there is no way to tell which weapon is an upgrade. I also have not seen ANY way to change party member's armor... So, did they dumb down their game or am I missing something?

Upgrade through level up, party members get different colored outfit when they become loyal.

I like the armor customization for Shepard, but they should have extended this feature to your party members as well. Other than that I am disappointed with the lack of robust equipment. I guess Bioware did this because they can't figure out how to do a proper inventory management system

I didn't mind the last inventory management system. I loved how I got armor and weapons and mods to customize and improve my squad-mates. Seriously only having ONE outfit based on loyalty is a HUGE step back. The weapons are also a step back. I see no damage increase etc. How do I tell which weapon is better.

Inventory management would be more interesting, I think, if they used a combo of ME-- with weapons lockers, or perhaps a full loadout prior to each mission (they have a select your gun option but I would like to see more variety in squad memeber equipment)-- and paper dolls like DA:O. I.e. Go into the equipment locker for your squad member and see their avatar. Apply any armor pieces to the correct location. Pick their weapons/ammo load out, equip any specialty items, etc.

ME2 in general seems to have taken several large steps backwards in the variety department.
