............so?

So we're going to go to a brand new setting with no memories of anything that took place or how we got there.  But it's still called "Mass Effect" because...?

I'm all up for more Mass Effect stories, but not at the expense of shitting all over everything that came before it. You can't spend three games building extensive stories and lore, then start abandoning it all, simply to create a new game that doesn't have to deal with the narrative that preceded it. (I'm looking at you, mandatory discharging of the drive core, which will no doubt be hand waved with space magic.)

Also, while some thought suicide was a fitting end, the last time I finished ME3 my Shepard was alive and in need of rescue. It'd be nice to actually know what happened to him.

that narrative is basically over though not much point in covering old ground. I prefer new and exciting things and dumping stuff and starting fresh is more logical. This is a new galaxy, new story new characters, it will be annoying if they try and tie it into the old games and have us constantly uploading our old game play stuff for basically what will be just a few cameos that don't matter in the long run.  Start fresh, dump the old stuff and create a whole new universe and give us a new take on the franchise I say it's for the best and in my view the most logical one

Yawn, are people still arguing about this? Oh wait it's just the usual people, never mind.

I would agree in the sense that I also want new stories, new characters and a new and fresh experience that has nothing to do with the old trilogy. But that said, I think this new experience can be made stronger, not weaker, by tying it back to the established foundations as well as they can. Why? for two reasons:

1. It actually enhances the sense of scale and the depth of the universe without any cost. If we really do everything anew, then we might as well have a new IP, where a lot of world building is required to arrive at the same depth ans structure that ME had at the end of the old trilogy. This work has already been done, so why not use it? I am not talking about particular stories or characters here, those should be new. No, I am talking about background lore. The things that have been established about the races, the society and technology, that should be maintained and respected. You can build on it, sure but the entire lore that is already present in the background is something you can use as a strong foundation and thus make the new parts of the universe stronger as well.

If characters use references to material from the previous games, it validates the consistency of the universe on several levels, it does for the new issue because we (the audience) can connect it something familiar without having to go back into the real world to do so, it validates the old stuff because it is still present in the minds of characters and it validates the character because s/he can associate different events within the universe with each other. It ties everything closer together.

2. Even when Andromeda is out, I'll still go back from time to time and replay the trilogy. I will feel better doing that if I know that my actions there will not be meaningless and isolated but will have an impact on the future of the world, even if it is just a single sentence reference by some unimportant NPC. The goal here is not to show maximum impact on the new story but just to present the evidence that impact was achieved, even if it happened somewhere else and is ultimately not relevant in the current context.

That's why I am all for optional save import with very small (and cheap to implement) differences. I think you can gain a tremendously satisfying effect for the player for very little cost on the developer side here.

The guy you quoted.  Not anyone at Bioware, though.

Can I at least live in the past where I still 165lbs?

Cause that was awesome, I'd eat 2 double whoppers with cheese, 2 king size fries, 2 king size cokes for lunch and not gain a pound.
