First; It was a rough start. Bryan Johnson of Bioware has to have worn out a keyboard, mouse and router trying to put little fingers in the proverbial DLC dam for all of the leaky launch bugs flowing steady. I can definitely say I was perusing and somewhat abusing the forum to play Trespasser, highly anticipated and eagerly sought after-worth every moment for those waiting still.
Dragon Age Inquisition has been a love/hate relationship. As I make the analogous comparison of drug of choice to this glue that Bioware has for establishing a deep and often pleasantly antagonistic relationship with their fandom; I don't do so reluctantly. Something can be said for the Walter White-esque heroes of drama and villainous and often unapologetic delivery of that blue toxin into a waiting set of hands. That is the life of a Bioware fan. We love to hate it, as much as we love to love it.
Carefully titled games like "Mass Effect" are par for the course. If they were more blatant about delivering the best of the crystal they'd don a black Heisenberg pork pie hat! But Bioware and staff don't have too. They let us; their fans do so for them.
I have posted many times about having some confusion to the new fusion of the Dragon Age franchise. Far too much space existed for a story to reside. It is like an empty mansion after a bitter divorce. Bioware being forced to move on from the comfort of the old and like a middle-aged divorcee, direly needed a makeover and still respect themselves. Trespasser has seemed to level that balance once again. A few open zones truly taking full advantage of the new hardware and next gen rigs balanced in a waltz of storied codex and cut-scenes make up for so much missing volume in the vanilla Inquisition. Trespasser has legs! Once it takes off it doesn't lull or lag-(for those who managed workarounds from other forumite's that is. Myself included.) This newest DLC was the finger on the scale, forcibly leaning my internal division to finally accepting Dragon Age Inquisition as the heir to the throne. Just like placing a top-hat on a long dead skeleton, I found myself accepting this in style.
Congratulations Bioware-team Dragon Age made one addicted fan very happy!
I hope Dragon Age 4, leaning toward Tevinter, can keep this balance. Confine open world to effective necessity, exploration balanced with narrative, and do your thing! There is a balance to the big empty-fill it with opportunity and don't forget that that is exactly what it is. I loved the huge maps-they were gorgeously designed and had a much needed freedom Dragon Age and Mass Effect lacked. These zones though needed to be gates to Trespasser! I think that was the intention all along but it just didn't have that gravitas we have come to crave from hardened connoisseur of the good stuff.
Thanks Bioware for the literal and figurative fireworks proudly displayed here. Even if I reluctantly had to suffer a bit for it. On all fronts! Sweet addictive fixes beat no fixes at all.
