Anyone else afraid ME:A will go Open World, and narrative will take a back seat?

With the Mako returning, a new galaxy, the protag being called The Pathfinder, and developers pointing to having a strong emphasis on exploration again, all signs are pointing towards another Open World experience, much like DA:I was.

Please for the love of god no.

I love having plenty of content in a game and feeling like I got my money's worth, but I'm sick of seeing pacing and storytelling take a back seat. DA:I's pacing and storytelling took a huge hit because of this. I just finished playing MGSV. Great gameplay for sure, but oh my god was it's story the worst in the series. There's also been no word that ME:A will be the start of a new Trilogy. I feel as if it's going to have this very self contained story, with a huge emphasis on exploration and side questing. Okay that's awesome for games like Fallout or TES, but I play Mass Effect for the story.

Yes, its my greatest fear when it comes to this game. I feel they will miss the point by a wide margin

I've been afraid of this since DA:I first came out. DA:I would have been better, no question about it, if they hadn't released on the older generation consoles. Much of the exploration content was cut from Dragon Age, whilst still leaving the maps absolutely huge, which obviously left them feeling pretty empty of anything "wow!". Andromeda isn't being released on those consoles though, meaning they don't have to cut back the content simply because a machine can't handle what the others can. We will get the truly amazing content in Andromeda, of that I have no doubt.

I'd still like a fully fleshed out story though, BioWare. If you're going to cut anything, don't cut the story content please (unless of course a particular part of it just doesn't feel right).

I don't know.  I'm a fan of open worlds and the pacing many of them have. Or more to the point no solid pacing, as the pacing is set by the PC.  The problem I have with the storytelling and pacing of previous ME games is they try to develop urgency but the game is about going on 100 side quests while the rpoverbial countdown timer should be ticking away but is instead frozen because Shepard needs to help an Asari and Krogans love life.

Poorly done open worlds where this is nothing to do in them can fail hard.  From what I understand DA:I fell into that trap.(but that could just be the BSN vocal crying minority)

I think they're aiming to replicate the experience of ME1 more than anything.

They should take from The Witcher 3 if they want to go more open world, rather than Bethesda games that historically has had weak narratives.

Since a Mass Effect game doesn't have to worry about being over or under levelled, then you could still focus on the main story if that's what you wanted and it wouldn't mess with the pacing.

I called it over a year ago that it will be a Destiny clone

I still stand by that prediction

Act 3 does have some issues tho but yes overall CDPR's design goals are a better match with Bioware's than anyone else. If they want to draw inspiration from another developer that is.

"We're at war.   Nobody wants to admit it, but humanity is under attack.  While you've been sleeping, entire stores of potassium have been disappearing.  Human potassium stores.  We believe it is someone working for the ancients.  Just as Bob and those droids stole some tacos from the cafeteria.    You've seen it yourself.  You bested all of them.  That's why we chose you."

"If you're worried about potassium, just point me in the right direction."

I continue to regard this as the best possible outcome for Mass Effect, so hopefully.

I mean I like DAI and it's environments are gorgeous, but the open world thing seriously hurt the game.

Mildly nervous I'd say.  But I still believe they're paying attention to criticisms, fan requests, and are keenly aware of the massive success of TW3 (plus Cyberpunk 2077 will offer some more competition and give them additional incentive to step up their game).  I suppose the real question is did they learn enough of the correct lessons from DAI's shortcomings to achieve the proper balance and epic finale that game severely lacked.  If they properly prioritize and focus...and not bite off more than they can chew, they should be able to produce a great game.  If all the emphasis is on the visuals and the side content is added as an afterthought expect a bad game.

After DA:I it is a concern.

On the other hand Bioware would have to be living in a cave to not have heard all the criticism aimed at DA:I, by both fans and gaming journos, that there were pacing problems with DA:I and that the story sometimes seemed to get swallowed up and lost in that vast open world.

Hopefully that criticism registered with the devs and it will make ME:A better game than it otherwise might have been. If ME:A releases with the same problems as DA:I, Bioware certainly won't have an excuse for it. Andromeda will be releasing at least two years after Inquisition. That is more than enough development time to make sure Andromeda is a more polished meld of open world and a focus on story and characters, than Dragon Age: Inquisition was.

The main plot doesn't need to be 100% stellar perfect - diva looking goodness, if there's a beautiful and living open world along with a great cast and solid plot with some flaws like any other game, I'm happy.

BTW, MGS5's story is terrific.

Open world exploration with Bioware companion characters?

Yes, please.

Only if they make the side missions more tied to the story, less painful fetch quests and nice cutscenes, then i'm all for it. More like TW3, would be ideal.

Also please, no more of this camera thingy DAI had, when you speak to companions or a NPC. You know, the one when there's no cutscene.

This.

CD Projekt Red did a much better job than Bioware on crafting interesting side content to fill their open world with. It had its share of filler too of course, but it never came close to reaching critical mass, and the filler felt much more optional in TW3 than it was in DA:I.

TW3's main plot isn't anything ground breaking, it's very simple and somewhat uninspiring, the characters makes up for it (ME2), as for the open world, it's very well done, indeed.
