I just started my second play through. (in the first I guess he is rotting in a prison cell)

But I met him and he actually survived the joining. I'll post his epilogue later for anyone interested. Until then, what epilogues does he have if: he is romanced, or if you chose an option other than making him take the taint?

I free'd Thom with no obligations, and supposedly he goes around saving those everyone thinks are irredeemable in the epilogue. I picture him as one of those scared straight guys who goes up to people and yells "THIS COULD BE YOU, THIS BEARD."

Also he tried to make reperations with the soldiers he lied to, and apparently a lot of them hit him in the face. He lost count around 12.

I found Blackwall's timeline a little curious...

I left him to rot in the Orlesian prison. Yet the codex entry I found on him was a letter to Leliana from one of her spies. It revealed his identity as Thom Rainer to be a shocking revelation, and said that he was arrested six months AFTER Corypheus had been defeated - and then not heard from since.

Did I hit a bug? Is this the codex entry you get if Blackwall's secret is never revealed in-game?

I'm thinking it's an oversight of some sort.

If he is romanced and set free:

He makes amends with the people he hurt and says he lost tracks of how many punches he's gotten. After the game ends, he travels to prisons and places of despair to help lift people up into being something better than they were. The Inquisitor always remains by his side.

If he is sent to the Grey Wardens (not romanced):

He bids goodbye to his friends and is rarely seen again. He does stay with the Grey Wardens for good and people comment on how he always finds time to help others along the way - a shield for the defenseless and giving simple cheer to children with small carved toys.

If he is sent to the Grey Wardens (romanced):

Now I'm not 100% positive on this because I have not seen a youtube video with this ending and no one has shared screenshots/text of this particular epilogue, but I've been told that Rainier stays with the Inquisitor for another year before he's called away to the Grey Wardens. The Inquisitor gets his badge and a white griffon feather in the mail and does not hear from him again. The implication is that he's dead in this particular outcome. Take this with a grain of salt until confirmed.

If he's forced to maintain the lie:

No idea.

That's definitely what happens, but I'm afraid I don't have a screen shot.

For what it's worth, my guess is that unromanced Warden Thom also dies at Weisshaupt, but they didn't feel the need to explain that he goes there and doesn't come back unless your Inquisitor was in a relationship with him.

I had an unromanced Blackwall that wasn't sent to the GW and allowed to remain free, but maintain the lie.  He still ends up going back to using his real identity (and runs around trying to make amends with his old soldiers and redeeming others).  I assumed that after Corypheus was done with, Quizzy was okay with him doing as he pleased since he was done serving against the main crisis.

I didn't do his quest because I leave him in prison and wanted him for the dlc, but I got the note that the truth came out and he turned himself in.

So no one knows yet what happens if you leave him in prison?

Oooh, thanks for sharing that. I love all these little variations.

Not a bug.

It's just one of the possibilities available depending upon what occurred in your game. In one of my runs this was the case too. In that game, I had romanced him and he left me lying naked in the loft, only to shortly discover the note leading to his Val Royeaux fate. I angrily confronted him in the cell and left him to rot. I later found solace in Cullen's arms and we married at Halamshiral.

Blackwall didn't show up in my Trespasser playthrough. His personal mission never triggered, but he's still listed in character select (though crossed out) as Thom Rainier.

Hi guys I have a problem. In Trespasser I found that Blackwall is missing...along with all the gear I gave him...(Rages xD) During my pt I didn´t romance him (Too bad he is not gay xD) or made his personal quest either...so I am guessing the worst sceneario: gear lost for good right xD? How I should prevent this? Romancing him is the only way maybe? I reckon his approval with me was ok, I think...

Thanks in advance.

Do you have any warden relics you could find with him? Approval has seemed to be the limiting factor for me.

Blackwall gains slight approval everytime you kill darkspawn with him present (in the base game, don't know about Descent). Since darkspawn respawn on the Storm Coast and in Valamar in the Hinterlands, approval shouldn't be an issue.

Based on other people's datamining, approval numbers work like this:

slightly approves/disappoves = +1/-1

approves/disapproves = +5/-5

greatly approves/disappoves = +20/-20

Since more time has passed since the DLC came out, I'm hoping maybe someone can shed some light on the following questions:

1) If you banished Grey Wardens and Blackwall at Adamant, is there a codex at all on him in Trespasser? (i.e. Did the Grey Wardens ever discover he was not actually Blackwall?)

2) If his personal quest never triggered because approval wasn't high enough, what does the codex say? Was his lie ever discovered?

3) If you left him in prison, what does the codex say there? Confirmed to be executed?

It's too long of a game to go all the way back to Adamant and/or Revelations just to see how it plays out in Trespasser so was hoping someone could answer a question or two.

I liked that he took up the name Thom Rainier again in the DLC, includind on his tarot card and everything. Nice touch.

FYI

If his Thom Rainier side quest is not triggered after you finished Cory then he will be automatically exiled in Trespasser, means losing him permanently...

I wonder if there's an opening scene for Rainier if he was put into servitude as Blackwall. I just started the dlc with such a playthrough but I have very low approval with him. He just says "Inquisitor" when spoken to. According to the codex, the Wardens have figured out Blackwall is dead and they warn Inquisitor about the fraud. Cullen suggests letting the Wardens have Rainier.

Edit: Blackwall will be treated like a warden throughout the dlc; even by himself. The codex entry is all you get.

Blackwall becomes a motivational speaker?

I learned not to romance him and make him a GW. Not the best romance choice after Solas. Bull luckily made things better on my next PT.

Ouch, yeah, don't do that.

Haha that was sooo depressing! Next time I romance Thom, he will be forgiven, but not given to the GW. That ending was beautiful!
