Do you think the old Dalish tattoos where like the ones on Fenris? and might they have been made of lyrium?

 

lo imagine if Fenris new all that crap about Elven mages.

Honestly I think its possible, but lyrium tattoos (so not vallaslin) were probably reserved for the most privileged and deserving of the Elvhen warriors. It's mentioned in the WoT2 that Danarius is actually trying to duplicate that ritual, and given the whole 'half of Tevinter things are related to the ancient elves', it wouldn't be surprising.

I still suspect they are also binding marks the Evanuris can use to control their slaves.

This seems more likely, they could have used the vallaslin for regular slaves but lyrium for the particularly rebellious ones or those with skills too good to waste away in a common slave.
