Is there a way to override the default loadscreen for the initial module load? (I.e. the one with the b&w pirate skull symbol.) I tried putting custom 'Generic_Default01.dds' and 'Generic_Default01.tga' files in my Override folder, then also in my ui/custom folder, but the original one still shows up.

Lance's module does it. I'm sure he'll come by and enlighten us :).

It looks like Lance's module is doing something similar; placing the replacement graphic in the ui/custom folder. There must be some additional setting that I need. Maybe it's in the loadscreens.2da? Hmm...

Could be written in one of the game's xml files. Like, not just replacing the graphic, but also mention it in an xml? Just guessing now :), don't even know how xmls work at the moment.

I'm pretty sure my load screen replacement mod does it.  I haven't seen that skull graphic you're talking about for a long time.
