Level of Detail - anything I can do?

I hate to broach the subject, but is there anything I can do to improve the level of detail or are the ini files tied up in knots even tighter than last time? I'm mostly referring to uniforms, clothing, outfits and armors especially. Might be minor to some, but it's borderline driving me crazy to look at.

Also, I've heard claims that Bioware fixed the texture pop-in that was so prevalent in the last game, but as for me I still see it after loading on occasion and it's very noticeable. But not as bad as the super low-res detail on certain things.

Does anyone know if there's any plans in the works to patch this, or even anyone from Bioware that can comment on this? It's been radio silence on this issue. Thanks.

Totally agree- I think generally ME2 looks quite nice, but the uniforms/armor just look so chunky with the textures. Not a huge issue, but its disappointing to see.

Yeah, there are some textures in game, some civ clothing, and ESPECIALLY the Volus. The textures on them look absolutely HORRIBLE, exactly like in ME1

That's what I thought. It's been an issue to me since ME1 for pc was released. I know you can't really call the ME games ports per se, but it sure feels like the same visual stuff the 360 guys get. I didn't spend more money on a pc than a console just to use the same cranked-down graphics. Hopefully something happens, but it's not looking good (no pun intended).

are you sure your grahpic cards setting in Ati Catalyst center or Nvidia Control center isnt causing it?

I've set up profiles before in Nvidia Control Panel, I am pretty confident in what each setting does. Each setting is tweaked for quality.

Are any of them overridable by the application, though? I had everything on "use application settings" in the ATI CCC, and it looked terrible until I just overrode it.

Anisotropic filtering is set to application preference. I have it set to 16x in the Config tool. Anti-aliasing doesn't seem to help in the ME games and it's a performance killer also. V-sync is also on application preference.

I'm not seeing that at all - if anything, the textures look almost too amazing. What gfx cards are you using?
ME1 had manual texture settings in both the launcher and the game, but they are shockingly absent in 2. This leads me to assume that the related gfx settings are handled automatically somewhere. Normally, you could just edit the .ini files, but the GamerSettings.ini is pretty sparse, and the DefaultEngine.ini is atrociously messy. They went waaaay off the reservation for Unreal Engine configs here, and it seriously complicates tweaking.
Anyway, it does look like there is an Ultra/High/Med/Low texture setting somewhere, I just don't know how to get at it. There are some .xml files that suggest that there should be an option for texture settings in the launcher, but there isn't. These same files (in \\\\Program Files...\\mass effect 2\\data\\) also suggest that there should be the standard (for the Unreal Engine) BioGame.ini and BioEngine.ini files somewhere - but again, no.

I'm baffled. There are a number of settings, including the ones ya'll are looking for, that logically have to exist, but they are nowhere to be found.

I'm just as baffled as you are. And why are the .ini files so much more twisted now? The only thing that accomplishes is preventing people from potentially finding fixes to their own problems with the game.

This is one of those times when I wish the guy at TweakGuides was still doing game guides.

Or if Koroush at least kept the forums open.

It looks like the (\\mass effect 2\\BioGame\\Config\\PC\\Cooked) Coalesced.ini has the expected settings, but the file format aint right.  Notepad doesn't see the line breaks, and GetDiz (the text editor I usually use) won't read it at all.  Long story short, the sought after variables seem to be there, but its pretty damn illegible.  I'm going to try screwing with it a little to see what happens.
Why BioWare decided to go all crazy-non-standard with this I have no idea.  I have an idea though...

Hey, BioWare, do you guys like the Trailer Park Boys and The Kids in The Hall?  Me too!  You Canadians have the best comedy!  Lets be best friends!!

Now that we're buddies, how about telling me why you went crazy with these config files?

There's this thread over at gamespot. It basiclly says the the commands for the console are in that file, but it seems to be hardcoded not to work. Also something about the Coalesced.ini being a 32-bit dword and stuff.

Yeah, editing Coalesced.ini as text prevented the game from loading. I would love to know why they felt raw text was a bad idea. This compiled dword nonsense is ... well... nonsense.

I think some of the commands can be placed in GamerSettings.ini, but I'm not sure how effective it is. The only settings I really wanted to get at were bUseD3D10 (didn't load) and bDisableHardwarePhysx (no effect). I assume they'd have to go under the appropriate heading, like [SystemSettings].

So, turning back to the OP, adding the section [D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice] to GamerSettings.ini and following that with the line MaxTextureSize=2048 might help. But I don't know.

Anyone know if it hurts to bump the MaxTextureSize up?
