Gonna buy the mass effect trilogy on steam that includes number 1 and 2. Completely new to the game aswell. How does dlc work? Someone said I had to make an account on this website and download it? For ME1 a dlc is free but I saw somewhere else that it isnt. Same goes for 2.

Is buying the dlc actually worth it or just an add on to the game? Will the story be ruined or not good without it? What does the dlc include? And lastly, how much is it and how would I get it?

Thanks

You need an Origin account...you must download the Origin client, and register on Origin.
Origin will accept your Steam game codes for ME.
If you have physical copy then you can 'redeem' it on your account and gain the rights to a digital copy (that you can now download).
The Origin digital copies have all 'free' DLC available.

To see what you have installed, you can use the game configurator.

DLC either are available immediately in the game, or you must pass a certain milestone in the game.

there is no ME trilogy on Steam........best to get the whole thing on Origin where you can also get the DLC from. Steam doesn't have any ME DLC.

as for whether the DLC is worth it, that depends on your personal preferences. there are DLC which are pieces of the storyline, and others just add cosmetic items (such as alternate outfits for your squadmates) or additional weaponry.

Since you're new at this franchise, I'll try to keep it as spoiler-free as possible.

Mass Effect 1 DLC:

- Bring Down The Sky: It's a mission separate from the main plot. It introduces the Batarian race. The Normandy (your character's ship) receives a SOS from an asteroid, where Batarian terrorists have captured a human science team. The mission is no longer accessible if you have reached Ilos.

- Pinnacle Station: It's a Spectre training ground, with its own set of competitive challenges and leaderboards. If all objectives are completed, Shepard receives his own apartment on the Pinnacle Station asteroid. The mission is no longer accessible if you have reached Ilos.

Mass Effect 2 DLC:

- Lair of the Shadow Broker: Shepard receives unique intel on the Shadow Broker, a mysterious individual or organization which deals in the galaxy’s secrets. Information is his currency. Knowledge is power, and he has eyes and ears in every corner of the galaxy, on every world. It's an action-heavy DLC in which you team up with "an old friend" to take down the Shadow Broker.

- Zaeed - the Price of Revenge: This DLC adds a new squadmate, Zaeed Massani, a battle-hardened veteran mercenary and the founder of the Blue Suns mercenary group.

- Kasumi - Stolen Memory: This DLC adds a new squadmate, Kasumi Goto. She is a master thief without second, capable of cracking the most complex technology.

- Project Firewalker: Your ship acquires a new exploration airborne vehicle called the “Hammerhead”, with several Geth-related missions included.

- Overlord: An action-heavy DLC in which a hybrid AI has taken over a secret research station and is attempting to upload itself off-world and take over the galaxy’s machines, resulting in technological apocalypse. The Hammerhead is the main means of travel in this DLC.

- Arrival: This is the final DLC for Mass Effect 2 and It bridges the gap between the conclusion of ME2 and the beginning of Mass Effect 3. Reminiscent of "Bring Down The Sky", Shepard is instructed by his superior, Admiral Hackett, to rescue a personal friend of his from a Batarian prison on the planet Aratoht, deep inside Batarian space. Her last report stated that her research team discovered an ancient artefact on an asteroid in the Bahak system, which gave her proof of an imminent invasion by........giant space monsters.

*ME2 also includes several cosmetic/weaponry DLC.*

Mass Effect 3 DLC:

- From Ashes: Returning to Eden Prime, the planet where it all began, Shepard attempts to recover a Prothean artifact from the enemy faction. This DLC adds a new squadmate, Javik.

- Extended Cut: Originally meant to be released as paid DLC, the Extended Cut expands the ending sequence of Mass Effect 3. It is free.

- Leviathan: This is a lore-heavy DLC, which delves deep into the origin of the Reapers and introduces the Leviathans.

- Omega: Cerberus has invaded and taken control of the Omega space station. Aria T’Loak, Omega’s deposed ruler, recruits Shepard to help take Omega back. This DLC introduces the Adjutants: horrific Reaper creatures created by Cerberus which convert their victims into more Adjutants. It also has a DLC-exclusive bonus squadmate, Nyreen Kandros (female Turian).

- Citadel: Taking some much-needed downtime, Shepard is unavoidably dragged into battle through the Citadel wards by a new enemy who is dead set on eliminating him once and for all. Once the mission is concluded, Shepard throws the mother of all parties and spends quality time with every surviving squadmate he recruited in all three games (excluding Aria). Citadel is the final DLC for Mass Effect 3 and serves as a farewell to the trilogy and Commander Shepard’s story.

It also has an arena with its own optional side-missions, where you can fight against computer-controlled enemies. It's a much-improved version of Pinnacle Station.

*ME3 also has several weaponry & alternate outfit DLC.*

Whether you prefer action-heavy or lore-heavy DLC, each one is a piece of the story so I'd recommend all of them. The alternate appearance/weaponry packs are hit or miss.

ME3 also has a multiplayer mode and several DLC which are completely free of charge.

Is Pinnacle Station still available, though? I started playing this game less than a year ago and I couldn't find a place to buy it or download it from EA like Bring Down the Sky.

So does Arrival finish with you being locked up?

Not exactly. Arrival becomes playable after the Horizon mission, although I play it as the very last mission in my playthrough. Meaning you can continue playing the main game if you finish the DLC before the Suicide Mission. It's just the conversation thing "when Earth calls, you better show up".......that kind of thing. But it's never shown. Just implied.

I just read somewhere where you can register your steam version with origin & then download the origin version of ME1 with Pinnacle Station.

Wow, thanks! I had no idea. I actually even have ME1 on Origin already, but before I ever got to play it I was given the Steam version as a present, so I play that one. I never knew. Now I feel stupid.  Thanks once again!

Yeah that is what I did.  Well partially.  I mostly registered it so I could get the ME1 logo on this forum. :)

You can also register any retail copy with Origin. Just use the license code. Even when registered, you will not need to start up Origin every time you start the game but you can download it fom there if you don't have the disc on you. Not sure if the DLC will be automatically added though. AFAIK, BDTS was always free for the PC version of ME1, so it should just be downloadable. I somehow had Pinnacle Station on Origin at some point but I don't quite remember how that happened. I bought it back when it came out from EA's old download platform that preceded Origin, so I think it just got transfered. It's also possible that it's free, once you register the game now. I really don't know. (That said, Pinnacle Station is usually the only part of ME1 that I skip cause it's just badly made, boring and thankfully has no consequences for the later story).

As for Arrival and the beginning of ME3, IIRC, there is a free short comic out there (I think the name was Conviction), which introduces James Vega and implies that Anderson seized the Normandy somewhere in the Terminus Systems (probably with Shepard's consent, i guess, how else would they track down the SR2). Still think it's one of the greates missteps of the trilogy that the transition from ME2 to ME3 is never touched upon at all.

I registered my retail version of Dragonage Origins with Origin, thinking that if I reinstall the game it will be a painless process to add my DLC's, because back in the day, I had had so much trouble with the DLC's for that game.
Saying they where downloading but never finishing. Getting told to reinstall the whole game. Downloading them and having them tell me I couldn't play them because I didn't own them.
Or downloading, activating, & then not showing up on the map because a necessary manifest.xml file wasn't included in the right part of the download & had to be manually extracted & added.

However Origin doesn't really acknowledge that I own the DLC's, or that any other than stone prisoner is installed.
If I click on Buy Now for any DLC that I already own, only a blank window comes up.
If I click on Buy Now for the feast day ones (the only ones I never bought) then I have the option to buy them, so Origin seems to know which DLC's I own.
Only I accidently clicked on "Repair Game" and although the game had been working properly, it took a very long time to basically replace everything and now I have to Activate the game every time I start it (without even the option to remember my username or password.)
I would reinstall from my retail disks, but after only 5 or 6 years the DLC nightmare is still too fresh to risk it.

This is why I don't buy DLC's for Bioware games.
Having said that, I enjoy playing the Mass Effect Trilogy more than I thought I would (not having played shooters since Doom 2 & no interest in Sci-Fi) and so I might try my luck with a Mass Effect DLC.

I only played Pinnacle Station once, not so much that it was boring, but the combat difficulty seems disproportionate to the rest of the game. (And I play on Easy )

Origin did something similar to my ME2. I don't know what possessed me to register my Steam copy on Origin too, but the retarded thing would keep trying to download every DLC in the game, even though it's already installed 100% clean.

I have both DLC's with "working Codes". Should I register my Codes for the DLC's in Origin, too?

I register Mass Effect 1 at Origin some time ago. (IBut I prefer not to play it with Origin)

Yeah I tend to have problems with the DLC's for the older Bioware games ME3 and DAI work OK but Origins,DA2 and ME2 all tend to be rather troublesome also I find the cheat trainer dosen't wor4k to well on the Origin version of ME2 either so usually I stick with my older standalone versions when playing these 3 games. Besides I got the dlc from the BSN anyway and have them asved on a USB so it's fairly quick and easy to reinstall thenm when and if I need to.

You can keep both the older retail version and the origin digital copy in your origin library: the game will appear twice.
If you have DLCs that are installed in one version and not the other, Saved Games may be problematic if you attempt to cross play them.

Pinnacle Station is available only in the Origin digital copy (along with BDtS) and they're both free.. It is not available for download for the original retail version of ME. The download of BDtS found within EA Help is for the old retail version only (and it no longer requires a key). You can tell if your install was the original retail version by looking at the install directory - if ME exists under EA then its the old, if it exists under Origin Games its the new.

You are lucky you are coming to it now. Bring Down the Sky was amazingly crappy to install in the olden days. It's a great piece of DLC though, directly related to Shepard's past, and brings a lot of context to an entire race. I like Pinnacle Station, it's not like I revisit it after I have completed it, but the combat missions are nice training actually.
