I think the weight system was in general a good idea, though, as I said above, some of the implementation was contrary to the obvious design intent.
As to multipliers, though, I think that misses the real differentiation between weapons. There are sniper rifles for long range, shotguns for short range, and assault rifles as a general purpose weapon. SMGs seem to have been added in ME2 to give power classes an automatic weapon. Pistols are nice for cut scenes, I suppose, but rather silly on a battlefield. I would say, every class should have access to the 3 basic weapons, and that the more powerful a weapon becomes the more it weighs. Those who want to focus on weapon based play styles can then go for more weapon damage to accomplish their goals, while those who want to focus on power based play styles would take an alternate route.
