I guess people must be buying platinum, but why?

The best case scenario is you get something good, and everything you do after that point is changed as a result of you having it, so everything is tainted by the nagging notion that you didn't really earn it.

The far more likely alternative is that you give EA money and get nothing in return.

Is this a generational thing? Is it younger players who are used to things being this way? Old-timers who don't have time and just don't give a honk?

Unless you are my mother, then I don't really see why it's any of your business how I spend my money.

It's about time spent grinding vs time saved buying plat, especially if they finally made the big chest good value.

Some people have more disposable income than time to grind.  Be happy there are those who support the game by doing so.  Development, contrary to BSN opinion, doesn't happen in a vacuum.

It depends on your relative value of money versus time.

If you were Bill Gates rich, would it matter if you spent some money on platinum?

Besides, it is one way to show support for the game (the other being time spent playing).

Showing support for the game is a good thing.

Some people have more money than free time.  Some people see it as a small investment in a hobby to which they devote literally hundreds of hours.  I don't see why this is something that should be looked down upon.

Your 1st sentence doesn't make sense in this regard, is it tainted that one person plays for 900 hours and finally gets a hok ring and another gets one the 1st chest they open?

Your second sentence is incorrect as well.  You get this game and future multiplayer games.  If no one bought stuff with real cash at all would you care to think about how much support, dlc, new items you would get?  Would you care to dare to think there might be MP for the next mass effect?

It is not generational other than the likely hood that older people have more cash to possibly spend.

I've said if before.  Everyone has something they like to spend their cash on.  I an 100% guarantee you that whenever I see a person wonder whey some is wasting their money on something I could counter that point with that person and wonder why they waste money on another thing.

I have not spent any money on this game, not due to the rng at all but due to the fact that it simply along the way has been a very unstable product.  I did spend money on Mass Effect 3, not because I wanted the latest fancy weapon but because they put out lots of good dlc and it was my way of supporting the initiative.

I'd be one of them, if they sold something other than spins on a slot machine. That's just something I'll never support; it doesn't matter the company or the game.

But for me, the fun comes from the progression, so I wouldn't pay to make my enjoyment shorter. It's obvious I worded the OP poorly. What I mean is... what other kind of enjoyment is there? Why is it more fun to get a better item sooner? If it's just to play or to play with friends, I get that. I've played shooters and things with no progression and still had fun. But why rush to the higher difficulties? How does that change anything?

I have ample money, but I will never support this kind of predatory anti-consumer money grab that some companies use to take advantage of unsuspecting customers.

If the loot table tier and RNG chances were published on the platinum page, do you think people would still be buying this?

But it isn't a good value. Promotions are way more valuable than the salvage chests.

Sure, over time - if you have the best equipment.

But make no mistake, if you can't play the game alot, but like the gameplay and have the cash why wouldn't you go spend some on plat? It helps progress your open chest count which in time lets you get better loot.

It just depends on what you find fun as opposed to the value you place on money as opposed to the value you place on your time.

I will grant you that my own opinion, as well as gamers in general, has evolved.

I remember in the early FF11 days, gold farmers were looked down upon, as well as those who bought gold.

Nowadays, it's just part of the gaming experience.

When you first started playing, was routine fun?  Was it fun knowing you are stuck in the lowest level tier for drops and you are going to get crap?  Was it fun not having enough materials to craft stronger, better armor or not being able to unlock new classes?

Balance that against how much spare time you have to play the game and balance that against the relative amount of money you have to spend on frivolous things, and somewhere in that matrix is where people decide to buy platinum.

I confess, I bought platinum...what can I say, the lure of cloth chests overcame my reticence.  Just the slightest chance to get some of that sweet, sweet cotton - with two little gray hok rings, you can bet your arse I was willing to take the chance I might be able to finally craft that grip (jeweled?) for PBTM.  Alas, I can only play bow-bish for so long, so I need more cotton - bring back crafting chests!!!

The first thing I noticed about plat was how ridiculously expensive it was

I mean fall over backwards expensive, I was thinking this may have been a trolling effort on bioware's side for making plat available this late, this expensive

If I could turn my gold -->plat-->real money I would make this my dayjob

Respectfully, your first sentence contradicts your second one.  There is no item progression in this game, it's all RNG.   Sometimes you just want a chance at shortening the grind.  It's not like you would get all lvl 27 items, even if you spent hundreds on platinum.  People still play the game and promote after they have hakkon wepaons

I've bought platinum three times,(around $70), and gotten nothing but delicious scrap out of two of them.  DO YOU LIKE THE HOSSBERG TWAINER!?, HERE"S ANOTHER HOSSBERG TWAINER!?.  I learned my lesson, and am upset there wasn't SOMETHING to be gained from buying platinum, but it's not like I can't pay my mortgage now.

The Bioware could learn something from mobile games, when you buy platinum, you could get modest "perks".  Other games call them VIP/Royalty levels or something to that effect.  I emphasize modest because they shouldn't give you a huge advantage over free to play players.  How about some exp potions that grant 10% exp boost for 2 hours with a purchase?  Or all promoted characters start at level two?  Or a couple free dragon calls? Something at all would have been nice.

They really spit the bit on the platinum system.  Bioware could have made a lot more money if it had been implemented better, which as others have said, would have led to more support for the game, and subsequently a better experience for the free players as well.

Cheers

Hmm.  Let's see. 2000 gold equates to 150 platinum for the large req chest.  13.33 g per platinum.

$30 equals 3300 platinum (there are other ratios, but that's the middle tier, so I'll use that) which works out to the equivalent of 44,000 gold (22 chests).  1,466.66 gold = one dollar

Four matches in an hour at a around 1,200 a match.  We''ll just be generous and say 5,000 gold an hour.  You would be making about $3.40 an hour.  Not that great, but I agree it would be more fun than my day job!   :D

You would need to make almost 11,000 gold an hour to get minimum wage, while getting less than a dollar per match you played.

Paid for modifiers are tricky because then the people with money will constantly be buying those bonuses (be they bonus exp gain or bonus gold gain) and have a huge split between the premium and free players. Sure this is co-op missions and there is no competitive, but promotion lords is a funnier joke than people putting their annual income in their user names.

I don't frown on those people. Supporting the game is great and sure, some people have more money than time.

However...

The RNG of DA:MP in its current form is so ridiculous that buying Platinum is nothing more than a giant scam.

There is literally no point in buying it as the chance you'll get absolute nothing out of the chests you buy with it is 99.9999% basically.

At this point, I'd literally rather burn my money in a pile than give anything more to this game. Of course, I'd prefer to donate it to charity first but if my only choices were giving it for Platinum and burning it, I'd make the best and biggest money pyre in the world!

Ha, on that we can agree, with one exception.  Platinum is probably useful to very new players, to jump-start their manifests.

I caved in and bought some platinum because:

(1.) I didn't want to sit on me arse for 12-24 hours like a lot of these promotion gods to get about 120,000 worth of gold in game only to get maybe one or two useful items or if any.

(2.) I wanted to show some support to the devs for their ongoing support in trying to improve damp content, I just wish this type of content was done by them from the get go.

Also, if you guys intend on resetting the loot tables than it would be a nice idea to tell your player base, a lot of gold was wasted by others to get nothing but serpents rage, runes, and Hossberg twainers. It feels like rng is back to the old days of giving 97% crap duplicates again.

I bought some when I first started.

I bought it so I could dismantle stuff so I could actually craft some advanced armor and not be stuck with the starter armor.

Don't regret it for a second.

Yep, in that sense I totally agree with Johnny's post that the only time Platinum is not a gigantic waste of money is when starting out.

I actually have bought platinum once too. When the class chests came out first and I didn't have lots saved up. I got some decent value out of it actually, finally got a Superb HoK ring and didn't feel ripped off.

I don't support buying platinum as of the current state of things though. Burn the money!

Only people on these forums are aware that you needs to open chests in order to get better chances at getting unique weapons.

This is where the entire system is a scam....

I didn't spend any money on Platinum,'cos I somehow disabled Origin overlay and no matter I do,can't enable it.

And that is good thing,'cos RNG in this game is a real biatch.Playing since Day 1 and still didn't get Bow of the Griffon and got Caliban and Sulevin only when already had waaaay better weapons.

Maybe I am fooling myself, but RNG in ME3MP was much kinder to me,'cos I got BW and Javelin in some of the first paid chests.

I bought 20 bucks worth of Platinum when I downloaded the free DAMP, I came from XB1 and wanted to break down the bad items for materials so I could get the classes I wanted right off the bat.

Was it worth it? To me it was. I despise the classes you start with, probably because I grinded with them for a long time on XB1 before I could afford a better/more enjoyable one.

Does that mean i'm going to drop 20 bucks every other week for platinum? Not with how the boxes are now.  I like how the chests were on ME3.  There were boxes for guns, characters, the consumables etc etc etc.  The DAMP boxes are everything all in one, the loot tables are too large to have a decent chance of getting something you need from boxes.  Hell the chances of getting something you can even use is pretty low with how bloated the loot tables are for boxes.
