I have been playing for a week or two and know the companion AI system is a little buggy. most of the bugs can be worked around with tactic adjustment and micro mgmt in tactical play. My toons are level 12 and I started to experiment with the specialization lines for my companions. I am having difficulty understanding KE logic (or lack there of) with Vivenne. It is worth mentioning that the first encounter after respecing for KE she did exactly what I expected.  she closed into the fray and started beating the crud out of people.

it seems to me that she wants to do ranged damage with the staff most of the time.  I can sit on the toon and keep spamming spirit blade to keep her danger close and she will close to melee range and stay there. Is there a mage melee weapon? if so I think this would be less of a problem.  if not can I craft a staff that has melee stats and the ai figure out that it needs to close to range instead of just hanging out?

that being said great game.  this is totally immersive and I can't stop playing.

So you want her to go into melee typically?

How do you have her behaviors set?  Who else is in the party, and which character do you usually control?

The issue might be that her tactics are set to reserve mana. That'll prevent her from going crazy with the Spirit Blade.

Yes I want her to go melee mostly. The party make up is Cass as tank, cole as duel dagger dps and I am a mage. if I can get this to work the way that I want I might swap out cole for a ranged rogue although cole has been working pretty well before I tried to make this switch.  it might be getting a little too crowded in the fur ball.

when in tact mode I usually sit on my character. when out of tact mode I usually sit on my character.  I set up most of her passives for extra barrier and barrier improvement. Spirit Blade is the only Active set for priority.  I have barrier set on manual and the other actives are energy barrage, immolate, mind blast and winters grasp. I wanted one spell for each element for variety and to take advantage of a mobs weakness.

Her gear is still set for ranged magic.  I have thought about redoing equipment but was holding off until I worked through this issue.  maybe the AI is taking into account the gear and prioritizing ranged magic?  I could always change the augments for melee where possible.

mana reserves were set to default. after DJA1493's comment I have dropped this to 0%. I have set her to defend Cass and Follow Cass. there might have been a slight improvement prior to changing the mana reserves.  I am going to try out the o% mana reserve with some of the different targeting behavior.

Having her follow Cass should work ok.  The main issue is that "follow" or "defend" is mostly in targeting priority, but at the least selecting Cass's targets will get her somewhat closer to the enemies.  I have read posts claiming that "defend" keeps the defender closer to the other npc, but didn't notice that myself.

I am not sure SB on preferred will matter as far as getting her into range.  Really preferred has more to do with when two spells are possible simultaneously and the AI needs to decide which one to use.  SB seems to just be locked out when out of range.  Granted, on preferred once she is in melee range it should help keep her there.

I didn't think gear matters wrt AI behavior outside of weapons.

If you are already partially using Tac Cam, I might simply issue a move order to near the clump of enemies.  You could try disabling all her ranged spells, but IIRC she just will autoattack in that case if she isn't in melee range.

The "aggression" setting from DAO would be helpful.

I have just run through a few options and looks like the defend Cass and setting the mana reserve to zero has helped greatly. I went ahead and adjusted the reset of the group.  Cass is set to follow a non existent party member. hopefully this with negate that behavior entirely. I send her in first and taunt and then just let her do her own thing. Cole and Viv Defend Cass and the Inquisitor is set to follow controlled. I set everyone to 0% reserve, adjusted healing potion to 1 and HP% based on the amount of HP. 20,30 or 40%

thanks for the suggestions.

Setting your tactics and taletns for your companions does a lot in my experience. I just went throught the deep roads boss, and dorian kept surprising me by fade stepping away from killing blows with mo micro management. It helps if you've played their specilization and know what you want them to do. The AI can be frustrating but if you set it up right it can be pretty damn imo.

Cass is set to follow a non existent party member.

It's better to have Cass follow Cass. Really. If you have her follow non-existant, she might just stop and do nothing. If you have Cass follow Cass, she'll pick her own targets and do what you'd want her to do as an independent. Then have Viv follow Cass and she'll be right in there with here. Also set SB to Preferred.

If you were running a Warrior yourself, a nice trick is to build out Viv to Revival in Spirit. So if you ever take a fatal blow, she'll insta-rez you (assuming she's not out of mana). You probably don't want to waste a slot and skill points to just rez Cass, though.
