Why do I always have to watch my screen without a clue what they are saying.

I love trespasser, but this one is frustrating even in this dlc.

I want to understand without having to google for once.

Dalish understanding of ancient elvish is not perfect, so not everything should be translated. Though getting a flawed/basic/imperfect translation that reflected Dalish understanding would have been good.

Though it's a little inconsistent. You do get subtitles in Solas' personal quest if Dalish

It is a little odd that Solas' conversation with the spirit in All New Faded For Her is fully translated but the other Elvish conversations aren't.

I guess elven inquisitor sometimes understands, and even speaks elvish time to time, but the problem is I don't..*sad face* 

My inquisitor was saying something elvish, but my subtitle gave me nothing..It's just so frustrating.

Oh, I remember Solas's personal quest got subtitles like you said, but most of my other playthrough-joh, trespasser-there are none...hence *sad frustrating face*

If you talk to Cole at the tavern in the main game as a Dalish elf and ask him what he feels/senses about you, he says that you are struggling to speak a language your parents spoke. Basically you are an Elf that's more human so Elven is a second language to English for you, which is also why you have trouble at the Temple of Mythal.

yeah..but even when my inquisitor was the one saying it, I've no idea what she/he was saying is a bit frustrating for me.

It is rather inconsistent, since it is translated sometimes and not others. Curiously though, when I went to the Solasan Temple, the codex said I made the partial translation from my time studying elven history (though I don't think the perk actually had anything to do with it), not Solas, because he wasn't in the party. The thing is though, I'm a human.

 

So if Trevelyan can translate ancient elven script well enough to understand, yes, Levellan should be able to translate more stuff.

This was honestly my biggest problem playing a Dalish elven Inquisitor during DA:I. The lack of knowledge about the Dalish langauge, specifically, but also the lack of knowledge about the general elven lore. Even if you say "my character isn't devout", I do think a Dalish Inquisitor would know considerably more about what's going on then is represented. A Dalish clan's entire reason for existing, to some extent, is to preserve and discover new things about their history, which are then shared at the Arlathvhen. If your Inquisitor is at least 20 years old then they've been to 2 of these meetings of clans in their life. They know who Mythal is, they know about the Emerald Knights, they might even know about the eluvian.

 

Even if the elven culture was lost Dalish elves are not city elves and are actively shunning human culture and actively seeking out Dalish culture. The lack of knowledge would be understandable if the elven Inquisitor was from an alienage, but being Dalish in a game literally drowning in elven lore and being stuck not knowing about anything? And then having Morrigan and Solas (two non Dalish elves) to tell them about their own culture? It annoyed me so much.

It annoyed me to no end when my Inky said "This Mythal." in Mythal's temple. Like, come on.... Also, I agree that if the Inquisitor herself uses Elven, it has to be translated in the subtitles. However, when it is specifically stated that it is Ancient Elven, basically a dead language even to most Dalish Elves, it's alright for them to not understand as much. But not be completely clueless.
