Why can't Mass Effect have squad mates like MGSV's Quiet.

MGS5 sucks. Weak story, no Hayter, barely any real boss flights, empty barren world, Sam Fisheresque combat and stealth mechanics/gameplay, not many epic cutscenes.... Remind me again how this is a MGS game again?

And then the reveal at the end is so stupid and such a slap in the players face... Dumb. Just dumb.

It's "Metal Gear Solid" for the new generation of gamers I guess.

Shallow. Incoherent. Boring. And hipster.

Actually her character exists to balance Big Boss' moral compass -- his softer side is more evident because of her; Her presences proves that there's still a more gentle side inside Big Boss, beneath all the hatred and lust for revenge -- Her 'condition' also serves to show the ugliness and danger of the main villains like Skull Face much like Paz from the previous games. Despite her 'outfit' she's a quite interesting character.

I think you might be reading a little too much into things Chris, only scene I can remember that showed "Big Boss's softer side" was the rain scene which was pretty uh.. not sure what the right word is here.... Japanese?

Pretty much just wrote off this scene as Kojima being Kojima, in any case I think he had ulterior motives behind this scene, I doubt it was so much about showing Big Boss's softer side but rather showing more of Quiet's soft, wet assets, and also play into the player's fantasy that there is some sort of romantic connection between the player character and quiet (kind of like the scene where Quiet invites Big Boss back to her cell for a private shower (which ends up being not so private)).

Outside of her kicking ass (which for some reason is used to deny the idea that she is a sex object because reasons?), dancing in the rain and constantly performing sexually suggestive poses Quiet really does not have much personality, she is a character that is there that was designed to be ogled and play into Kojima's (and the player's) weird fantasies, which is fine, I personally don't find the character very compelling but I do understand that guys do like looking at naked (or half naked) females which is totally fine.

What I don't get is the constant need to justify and outright deny that Quiet was designed to be eye candy to the point where you use every excuse but the real one which is that it gives you a boner, there is nothing wrong with that, if you want to play and create games with women as eye candy there is nothing wrong with that, you dont have to justify just as I don't have to justify my desire to see a squad full of half naked men in banana hammocks.

That Quiet rain scene... I don't never, ever, ever, ever want to see something like that in MEA. Also, I could never take any female soldier wearing a bikini top size of a postage stamp seriously, nor would I want one in my team. You don't see male soldiers running around in thongs and tac vest.

Thats what I am saying, I think it is about time somebody rectified that.

I don't know how a person who does not speak fits in the space enviroment. Or in military.

Well, now when I think of it, quite well.

Just let her/him float in the space forever like a silent asteroid going nowhere.

Sam Fisheresque combat and stealth mechanics/gameplay

 So, in other words: Amazing.

MGS has always been a convoluted, incoherent mess of a narrative. And if you found the game to be boring or shallow, you weren't playing it right.

It has more to do with how Big Boss seemingly is less stoic in her presence -- Not by a large margin but there it is. There seems to be some affection between the two characters, but I do get what you're saying about the.. various erotic suggestions a lot of them carries... yeah.. maybe I am looking too much into it a bit though.

I'd also like to pinpoint that I never really sought to defend her outfit -- I was always rather vocal about how obnoxious it looked before the game's eventual release and that hasn't changed. Disregarding that, I like the character, I like her story.

As amusing as your comments can be sometime I feel like I should leave a response to this one.

Empty barren world it most certainly is not -- Lots of wild life, lots of soldier encampments, guard patrols and vehicles driving through, it isn't any less alive than a game like Red Dead Redemption. No Hayter might actually have been positive in this case given that his voice is just generally broken at this point (see his performance in Super Smash Bros Brawl or Peace Walker). He can't do the voice anymore. The gameplay is better than ever if not the best in the series, lots of opportunities for stealth; Take time to actually play the game before proceeding to such rash assumptions -- it is a wonder that you'd choose to call it out for having Sam Fisher-esque gameplay when the emphasize on action has been around since Guns of the Patriots; Although, I suppose the real stick people seem to have with the game is the lack of overlong cutscenes which I suppose I can understand to some degree as it's been around since the first game but I find that reducing their presence to be a plus even though I might have liked them in the first 3 games, I don't miss them all that much.

The reveal actually ties together quite nicely to that of Metal Gear 1 for the old NSX but overall the game was lacking a certain amount of content that was seemingly cut from the game which was a shame -- But what can you do when you deal with something like Konami? If anything, those games are so old now that a retcon was probably doing the series a favour.

To be honest I can't say I really noticed much of a drop in Big Bosses stoic levels except in the rain scene and her final mission where Big Boss has to rescue her, I think that was more to insinuate some sort of romantic affection between the 2 (again playing into Kojima and the player's fantasy).

Definitely agree here especially with your last point. It's interesting you should point out the stick with being 'forced' into uncomfortable decisions, which is also played out in the 'Heroism' feature along with giving you the option of whether to execute Quiet or not.

Should you choose to do unheroic things in the game, Big Boss will become closer to that of a demon -- There are no actual demon points in the game, but the more despicable actions he does the more his appearance changes, the shrapnel grows out and the blood doesn't wash off -- It's a bit silly, like Fable logic in terms of moral choice. But I think it's probably meant to play out a certain specific message

Oh man, this made my morning.

Fine, take your mute squad member! Just no awkward rain scenes that make me face plant into my keyboard, please!

I have no problem with fan service as long as it's not over-the-top, in your face and ridiculous, all of which describe Quiet. I'm not a prude, and I definitely don't believe sex appeal automatically equals misogyny, but it feels like Quiet was written & designed solely to be a sex object rather than an actual person, and I don't like that.

But then, it's what I've come to expect from Kojima. Just own up to it, man!

Not talking about the whole naked thing but the fact that she does not speak, though I would not object to a male alien companion that wears only a banana hammock because he has to absorb star essence through his bare flesh or some contrived reason.

Actually she does speak, but then she dies.

Quiet can speak without dying whenever she wants, IIRC it's just she can't speak in english.

Wasn't it that she's infected and disease may spread when she talks? I'll never get the logic of japanese game-design.

The infection targets speaking specific languages, for Quiet I think it was English.

I prefer something like Tess from the Last of Us. She is very useful companion, she can kill enemies all by herself and does not talk much instead she kills.

People assign all of this depth and hidden meaning to MGS, like only the plebs aren't able to comprehend the genius of the games. In reality they're just goofy, nonsensical drivel propped up by good gameplay and occasionally humor. The characters have no depth. The stories are not smart or well written. And the fact that they force you to sit through hours and hours of terrible writing to progress further makes them bad games IMO.

Tbf, all of that would be an apt description of Bioware titles too. Except the characters having no depth bit (well, the main ones, anyway.)

Quiet is an interesting character.

She was infected with a parasite that changed her body chemistry in such a way that:

1. She breathes through her skin. Covering her up is equivalent to chocking her.

2. Sunlight is her energy source (ie; photosynthesis and therefore she does not eat)

3. She "drinks" through her skin

4.  Therefore the need for much exposed skin surface.

5. The parasite gave her other traits too.. some Spider-man like..,,,, and others.

So, yes, a squad mate with similar traits might be interesting indeed.

What's the longest cut scene BioWare has made you sit through? Generally you can skip them or speed them up, and they're not very long. MGS4 had multiple movie-length cutscenes that couldn't be skipped. So even if you think BioWare writes incoherent stories you can pretty much skip that content at your leisure and get right to the gameplay.

You realize those traits are just asspulls to justify her horrendous character design, right?

Same can be said for the reasoning of Thane's exposed chest. It's all still fanservice....

The answer to ME's fanservice problem isn't more fanservice.
