Why can't Mass Effect have squad mates like MGSV's Quiet.

Oh God, I knew about the ridiculous Quiet origin story, but that rain scene...... Can anyone really sit through it with a straight face? For me, this is the equivalent of watching soap operas / soft porn mashup (and I'm actually on the bi spectrum).

As for the quiet type squad mate, I would've liked Zaeed to shut up for once and sharpen his blade or something, because he creeped me out every time I was in his cargo room.

Yeah, I don't know. It was such a blatant and over-the-top fan service attempt, but instead of being sexy it was so damn awkward. I'm a lesbian and my reaction was

But on the bright side, we got the Ocelot video out of it and that still cracks me up.

Quiet is an interesting character.

She was infected with a parasite that changed her body chemistry in such a way that:

1. She breathes through her skin. Covering her up is equivalent to chocking her.

2. Sunlight is her energy source (ie; photosynthesis and therefore she does not eat)

3. She "drinks" through her skin

4.  Therefore the need for much exposed skin surface.

5. The parasite gave her other traits too.. some Spider-man like..,,,, and others.

So, yes, a squad mate with similar traits might be interesting indeed.

NONE of this is "interesting" to me.  These are absolutely ridiculous and completely unbelievable concepts.  I want nothing of the sort (in a character of either gender) in ME.

Also here is the Ocelot verson of the rain scene

This is the only redeeming outcome from the creation of this ridiculous scene.

I'm not sure how that would be handled, since they'd still need some way to communicate with us, in order to get across their personality, thoughts, story etc. If they don't bring any of that, I wouldn't want to waste a companion slot on them, personally.

It would be incredibly interesting to interact with them. They'd communicate through facial expression and have a friend/associate/fellow squadmate speak for them when really needed. Have something like Snake Eyes from GI Joe where they've taken a vow of silence until a goal is fulfilled. It would make for some fine comedic moments.

I'm really not interested in a character like Quiet. Sure, a companion that isn't very talkative and often shows expression through body language could be somewhat intriguing, but the backstory of this character is just straight up rudiculous.

If you don't want Zaeed to talk , you could try not clicking on him.

Quiet and romance.

If anyone bothers to watch all her scenes, you'd notice how attached she is with the Boss.  Nothing sexual or kissing... just an acute awareness of her caring for him. Even Boss mellows somewhat, when he's near her.

As a sci-fi fan, I can accept her as she is.

But you're OK  with Turians, Asari, Hanar, Reapers, Drell, Elcor,  Keepers, Salarians, Volus... etc, etc.

How interesting that the above races are not ridiculous or that the Asari procreate with any race....and all turn out Asari.

I know nothing of this character other than some of the stuff I've heard on here so I probably shouldn't be commenting but I would just like to say that if I never saw a picture of her I would think she was like some kind of plant lady with the whole needed to absorb sunlight for energy and drinking and breathing through her skin. And now I'm thinking of it, a plant-humanoid alien companion could be pretty cool.

Skipping over the obvious oversexualization of the character (yes, that is some awesome cleavage going on there)... no. I don't want Metal Gear's level of crazy in my Mass Effect. Or anywhere else for that matter. In the first hour of the game, you're chased by a man of fire, nearly hit by a flaming whale, then chased by a man on fire riding a unicorn which is also on fire. And if you're a fan of the Metal Gear series, you know that that is not even the tip of the crazy iceberg.

I think the idea of mute squadmate is interesting. Fiction has had mute characters and they can work well.

It's disappointing to see people here knock a character just because of the way they look, yet the very same people go on about equality and acceptance for everyone and of all that. Don't get me wrong, Quiet is indeed an exploitative and oversexualized character, and I really did dislike how many scenes with her had the camera focus so much on her ass and chest, but she also has quite a bit of depth and character, especially for being mute for the majority of the game.

Fanservice is pretty much a running joke in Metal Gear just like cardboard boxes. They can go far, and it's up to you how seriously you're going to take them. Isn't it..? Characters have always been crazy (not just mentally), up to the point where you don't know how unreliable narrator the main character is.

I loved Metal Gear Solid series, but got tired and haven't played the latest ones. Yet, at least. Big Boss is so boring compared to Solid (maybe Solid's story as a modern man proceeded too well, there's not much to add anymore, while BB can't move on so Konami can milk with him forever without losing artistic integrity). Worse than that, the way they presented how horrible war is started to get quite tasteless (war trauma with some characters was handled so poorly.)

(Pacifism was major theme in most japanese games, Metal Gear included, but I wonder if that's changing with Japan's current politics and new generations. --Maybe I'm seriously missing out with skipping MGS5?--  Attack On Titan and some other new manga/anime titles, regardless how entertaining they might be, seem to be thematically almost opposite to what many oldschool manga and jrpg fans grew to love. American games were what we used to ridicule for their aggressive nature and boring world view.)

The Quiet plant lady in question doesn't seem to be out of place in a Metal Gear game... Probably/definitely she wouldn't be my fave, but at least I've seen much duller backstories around. (I'm happy when female characters are allowed to be as weird.) Without playing the game myself I can't say if she jumps a shark, or overstays her welcome when it comes to screentime, or if she'd surprise me.

Anyway that story has now been told. Not by Mass Effect (maybe luckily) and therefore we can't have squad mate like her anymore. Especially the silence part seems something I don't want to see very often. (Tldr: I speak about a game I never played. Sorry.)

I also think that the Asari and their ability to reproduce with any species are ridiculous fan service. I get that parthenogenesis is the biological foundation of it, but this is silly psychic parthenogenesis. I have no problems with the other species because they are completely made up and, frankly, not fan-wanking in the face of biology.

Quiet's backstory is complete rubbish. There is absolutely no reason to think that a parasite would cause a human to rely on photosynthesis to create energy nor gain permeable skin. Plus, even if she HAD those traits, none of that would require her to run around half naked. In fact, she'd be in danger running around with so much skin exposed if she was truly absorbing oxygen (and who knows what else) through her skin. That game takes place on Earth with humans in our past. It's a dumb concept. That's why I think it's ridiculous and don't want to see that concept in ME.

You'd think it'd be less fantastical and weird for parasites to help heal internal damage rather than give them... photosynthesis and drinking water through skin.

I too only want one female in the next ME game, and for her to be nonspeaking.
