Greetings,
After installing both discs, and loading the promotional codes, for Mass Effect 2, I had to see how well it all worked out. I am using Windows 7 64 bit, on a GTX 8600 Nvidia card. I got the collectors edition disc on time, in the mail, and was able to successfully install the blood dragon armor, Collectors edition armor, and the Cerberus Network card, which successfully gave me access to the DLC content.
I successfully imported my ME1 characters and was able to locate the one I wanted to use (Level 60, as opposed to Level 47-56 characters).
After starting a new game with the imported character, I got to the first in-game dialogue, and a screen pop-ed up saying "Hit Esc key to look at Squad..." So I hit escape and the dialogue was skipped. I noticed all of the bonuses occur. I tried to load from an earlier point to re-watch the missed dialogue, but the auto-save occurred after that dialogue. I also never saved after all of my import bonuses were applied. Any time I loaded from that character, I was level 1, with no additional bonuses. Repeated loads from all available save files would not apply the import bonuses. This tells me that the Auto-save occurs before the bonuses are applied, and the bonuses are not applied if loaded from the Auto-Save.
The save file I made next stated that it took me 12 minutes to get back to that point. Not a very big deal, but there are definitely some improvements that could be made here if/when the game is patched.
I have been playing a lot of Dragon Age recently. Using the default layout in Dragon Age, Tab + q + w was a combination I would try to use frequently, but only 2 out of 3 of those keys can work at once. It seems to be a hardware limitation on PC's. So I re-mapped several keys and got used to the new layout.
When starting Mass Effect 2, I found myself trying to use my re-mapped layout. Rather than re-train myself to use the default scheme, I remapped buttons I would try to press that didn't work.
In many games, such as Dragon Age, there are occasional tips on buttons, such as "Press (Tab) to highlight objects on screen". But if (Tab) is remapped to (a), then the string will say "Press (a) to highlight objects on screen". Mass Effect 2's quick hints only tell what the default keys are set as, so when the tutorial mode told me to use (q) and (e) to order squad members, I had to pause, go through my re-map, and check their new locations (turns out one of them was blank because e was re-assigned for something else, and not replaced). Also, not a big deal, but would be nice to have if/when there is a patch.
I am a very visual person, and I miss a lot of Audio because it just doesn't work well with the way I process information. So I always turn subtitles on. I will confess to missing some dialogue because I had to stare at the text when I noticed that different parts of the subtitles had different brightness, depending on the background. I thought that was awesome. And I forgive it completely when it occasionally will have a black bar on part of the screen when it is too bright.
Unfortunately, the algorithm is not always perfect and sometimes it is still a little hard to read. I noticed a thin outline of black pixels around all the text. I am wondering if there is a way, we, as end users can customize that border to be thicker. Instead of 1 pixel, maybe 3 pixel outline would be better? Maybe 1 pixel works well for most, but somebody else wants 5. That seems like something that could be in an .ini file, for those who use Subtitles and want to edit them a bit.
Sadly, the hardest text I ind to read are my dialogue choices. The text is darkened, with a black outline, often with a dark background. There is not always a lot of contrast, and I end up spending two or three times as much time as it would normally take to simply read all of the words.
I found myself holding down the map key frequently, because it has an arrow pointing "North". It helps me get my barring and prevents me from getting lost, running in circles ore "Leaving" though the door I came in from. Especially after getting distracted by a dialogue sequence, or a Hack/bypass mini game. Is there a way to toggle it such that it is on until I hit the map button again, instead of holding it down the whole time?
In Mass Effect 1, I would usually use two weapons most of the time, and I could use the F# keys to go straight to the weapon of choice. In Mass Effect 2, there is a Last Weapon button that does what I want, but it takes some set-up. Worse, when I load the game to retry something, the current weapon equiped is saved, but when I hit the switch button, I went from what I was expecting to be a sniper rifle, to a pistol.
Thanks.
