The hold function - still not fixed.

I'm currently doing a certain puzzle that requires you to move your party members independently, and have them hold position where you leave them. I remember basically pulling my hair out with this puzzle when I first played the game, not because of the difficulty of the puzzle itself, but because the extremely counterintuitive, and badly implemented "hold position" command.

It seems half the time I give the command, I end up having people follow me anyway, and when I switch from character to character, I have to remember to give the command yet again, to stop them forgetting that they had to stay still.

WHY doesn't this work like it did in the previous games? A simple hold position toggle! Click it once, and all your party members hold position where you leave them, until you click the toggle again to free them.

Switching between party members should not deactivate the toggle, and there should be absolutely no need to give the command again, once it's given - it should stay in effect, for all party members, until you specifically turn it off again.

PLEASE fix this, preferably with the next patch. Surely it can't be that difficult a change to make, and it would make the hold position command actually useful, and make this one extremely frustrating puzzle into something where you could actually concentrate on working out the puzzle, rather than keeping a constant eye on your companions to make sure they don't forget to hold position.

A hint: there's no puzzle in the game or DLCs that require the "hold" toggle. ;)

There is one, actually.

Really? Thank you for letting me know. I must have missed it. Where is it?

Is this the puzzle in the Hissing Waste where you need to light far-spaced veilfires in the proper order? I know a functioning 'hold position' command would have done wonders for making that one easier, but it can be accomplished by running around and either writing down or memorizing which one is which.

I definitely would love to see the 'hold position' toggle fixed, though. I've run into awkward issues both in and out of battle where my party completely ignores the command and runs around or teleports to me.

That said, however, coding and game design are very tricky things and I can only imagine debugging a toggle which should work and sometimes does but also fails often is much harder than putting in the toggle itself. (Then again, even that's a deceptively simple-looking feature which likely has to have many conditions set on it, for example to prevent you from entering the Hinterlands while your party stays stranded in the Hissing Waste.)

Yes indeed, that's the one. And to solve it, you need to have everyone hold position, and move individual characters about to do various things while the others stay at other locations ready to do their thing.

Got through it by essentially clicking hold every time I switched characters, and switching characters only when the game was paused. Still, a real nuisance, when a simple hold toggle that only deactivated when you specifically told it to deactivate would make things a lot easier.

The hold command didn't always work in the earlier games, either, but there we had the added ability to select multiple characters to make them stay still.

The hold position command from the radial wheel doesn't work, but I rarely have any problems using the tactical cam method (go into tac cam, select party member, double click on the ground where you want them to hold). Don't know which method you were using, though.

IIRC, the only way to get it to work reliably(without using tactical cam) is to make sure "Hold Position" is the very last thing you do with that character before switching to another... including movement. So if you accidentally tap the joystick(for console) after telling them to hold, it cancels it. Just hit "Hold" and then switch characters immediately. I think that's how it goes anyway. It's been a long ass time since I played that annoying puzzle, but I remember doing something similar to that and it worked consistently.

Yeah, that sounds about right. The way I got it was essentially - click hold - move a character to position - pause - click hold - switch to another character - (click hold just to make sure) - unpause - move character to position....etc.

Essentially clicking hold all the time.

How it SHOULD work:

Click hold - move about your characters to where you want them, have them do what they have to do, switch between characters to move them to new positions to do what they have to do, and once you're done with everything, click "hold" or "clear commands" to make them follow you again.

I 100% agree. I envisioned that Hold function to be more like a toggle mode. If they're in "Hold" mode, they stay where they are or where you move them to until you explicitly tell them to stop Holding.

It's because it is a command now rather than a toggle like previously. Thus, if you have a character do anything else (say... move to a lever or torch?) that command will be cleared and they'll revert to using their tactics (which, by default, is following you).

The real 'bug' is that nowhere in the entire game is anyone told this.

Reassert the command each time you've shuffled a person and it should be fine.

It's not broken so much as poorly designed.

That implementation is such a bad idea, that it might as well BE a bug. That's why I call it "broken", and why I think it really needs to get fixed. I'd really like to see someone official acknowledge that this is an issue, and some sort of expression of intent to address it.
