Some. I have to say, they were a lot worse back in 2011-12 when it was DA2 versus TW2. At least TW3 is worthy of the praise it's received.

I don't doubt it's a very good game, though I've watched some Witcher 3 videos and didn't really care for what I saw.

But even if it's the better game, it's better for reasons that would require changing Dragon Age into something entirely different (the static protagonist, the set love interests, etc.)

What I mean is that I think they're both excellent games that are as different from one another as they can possibly be, while still falling under the same nebulously defined "genre" - so much so that I think that there are very few valid comparisons one can even draw between them. And while there's obviously plenty of fan overlap, I can't possibly blame anyone for not wanting to play one or the other based on those differences (the ones you mention are key, but I would also add that TW3 emphatically has action gameplay, and DAI, for all people complain about, emphatically does not. There's more beyond that, of course).

One thing that I actually thought made far more sense in Dragon Age, that was in the witcher was abandoned sites. Basically areas that were over-run with bandits or monsters. But I thought it would have been far better in DA:I if instead of just 'unlocking camps' they were these sites, you had to take back from monsters/bandits and well restore order.

1. Better customization options... In other words, longer hair.

2. Playable races return yet again.

3. A new protagonist.

4. A smaller scale adventure (Leading the Inquisition is well and good, but for me, personally, nothing beats leading a small group of adventurers without the weight of an entire organization backing you up.)

5. More choices. I can't remember many choices in DAI beyond the main quest choices, nothing like kill/tranquilize/free Feynriel, or the Connor situation. Stuff like that, even if it apparently never made a huge impact in the future, matters in the moment at least.

6. More risk: No matter how incompetent you are, you're still able to navigate the Orlesian court; you always save the day. Can't we be punished for making mistakes? Our companions need to betray us/die/leave, otherwise we just take them and everything for granted, and it makes them feel shallow. And I applaud Trespasser, but it hurts less knowing that Bull betrayed us when the game was basically already over.

7. Rewarding exploration. I speak for myself when I say they didn't manage to capture the essence of Skyrim's rewarding exploration: I never felt like I was really way out in the world in DAI, even when I was in the Hissing Wastes. Perhaps them mini-zones need to be replaced by one HUGE zone, not including Dungeons/cities or whatever.

8. More cinematics. If we're talking with a random villager, sure, we don't need cinematic camera angles. If we're confronting Imshael... Holy ****, why the hell didn't they put any effort into it!?

9. Murder Knife needs to return.

10. More evil choices. DAI understandably forbids you from being too evil (You are at worst, kind of ruthless and rude about it) but if we're allowed to lead a smaller group of adventurers we're allowed more political freedom or whatever. It will breed tension with companions too, which leads to very different playthroughs depending on your choices.

11. Tactics, as they were in DAO and DA2 should make a return.

12. Mods, because that extends the life of a game by decades in some cases.

There, that's all I can think of off the top of my head. I wonder if they add stuff like this to a big list, if they evne see it :(

1) I'd like to see some proper plate armor.

Inquisition was severely lacking in plate armor, and you guys made no attempt to remedy that even in all DLCs. What happened to thigh protection? Why no full plate armor?

Armor variation was really bad.

2) Keep the open world imo, i never liked the linear and small areas of previous games.

3) Find a mechanically functioning way to implement Warrior-Mage archetypes without having to resort to a specialization. Maybe split Mages into two subclasses, or allow cross class combinations to a point.

4) Please rethink your approach to Mages. It was not fun at all playing on in DA:I. Only fire, ice, lightning besides specializations? I don't want to be an elementalist >.>

5) Bring back healing! -.-

I understand you tried to be innovative with the barrier system, but in my opinion it added nothing to the game. Healing is an integral part of medieval fantasy RPGs, prevention of damage exists in all of them, but why take it to the extreme?

6) Did i mention full plate armor? >.>

1. Hair and beards
2. More of what we saw in the initial release video- setting fire to boats, using torches in dark caves
3. Bring back blood magic
4. Bring back sylvans and all other monsters from previous games
5. Stealth out of combat. Each class should have been more outside of combat
6 bigger cities. Fleshed out npcs
7 swimming and boats.
8 flesh out the mmo quests and tie the regions together. They should have factored more into final outcome
9 backgrounds
10 more neutral choices
11 hold position should be frozen in place until at worse case you leave the area. Worked much better in dao
12 emporium auto included and wouldnt mind more interaction with this being.
13 traps and webs
14 lairs-theres no atmosphere. Sword coast cabin etc. should have been more places like crestwood and the haunted house in the woods. W3, dao, fallout skyrim did this in many cases better. I want more wow this place is scary or in dao where the spider queen showed up. Dai we get go to the grandfathers grave and we get a boring battle with a lame zombie
15 dlc has to have more impact. Hakkon should have been more than a region
16 tapestry should have more impact. Da2 you saw more of an impact from choices in dao (i got a potion stash from the dlc if you dpare the warden mage). Still not sure why some of the minor world choices are even on the tapestry (prisoner key). If its not relevant to the story why did you mention it
17 mounted combat-the amount of wasted resources that went to this. Of note there are more druffalo than horses
18 dungeons and wonderous items-few and far between. -no enemies drop healing potions. More gold less farming. Best treasure is in last are of game

1) Better hair and beard options. Also separate hair options for males and females and no more then 2 variations of 'bald'.

2) Better armor variety for the main protagonist. Also bring back proper plate armor.

3) More interesting, less 'fetch' MMO side quests. Make me actually give a damn about finishing them past just getting them off my quest log. Talk to CD Projekt Red for advice. Also less collectibles.

4) Make interesting characters like Cole, Dorian, and Bull. But also make me feel connecting to my inner circle again. I just didn't get that at all from DA:I unlike the previous two games. Show me the relationship I have with my companions, don't just have them tell me about it.

5) I only played through the Cullen romance, but his personal quest was really good even if his romance was kind of short.

6) More chances for our protagonist to actually have a personality. Bring back the DA2 colored dialogue wheel if you have to.

7) If you're going to give us Dalish elves again for a protagonist option, let them actually know more things about their own people. For a game so elven lore heavy my elven Inquisitor didn't know nearly enough.

8) Make our choices actually matter, unlike this game. I have never had my choices matter less then at the end of this game. Or, just really figure out how to end a game. The ending of both the base DAI game and Trespasser were extremely disappointing.

9) Keep the ability upgrades that came with a recent patch, but put them with the main game.

10) No more 'joke' loot unless you're damn sure your game is perfect first. The flower crowns and cheese shields just came off to me as wastes of time, time that could have been better spent improving so many of the things I was disappointed in.

11) Get better voice actors for the male protagonist. I liked the multiple accents but to me with the English and American male voices both sounded really wooden and shouty.

12) Bring back the DA2 approach to Mages with the huge range of spell types and HEALING MAGIC

13) Bring back the full range of ability slots, don't just restrict us to 8. This was especially annoying to me as a PC player.

14) Show the terrain better on the mini map. I can't tell you how many times I was taken out of the game by anger because I couldn't physically get to where a quest was.

15) A Dalish elf romance with a Dalish elf who loves and is accepted by their people. Or a non Dalish elf who likes the Dalish. Or at least a non Dalish elf who doesn't mock and/or think of them as stupid children. Stop shitting on the Dalish.

16) Bring back the more complex currency system. Having everything be 'gold' doesn't make sense.

17) Better tactics, like the ones you got in DA:O by using the Enhanced Tactics mod

18) Unstick the tac cam from the ground. Basically bring back the DA:O tac cam.

19) If we're going to have a place like Skyhold again, make it actually make sense. Skyhold didn't make any sense as a keep or castle when you really look at the location or layout of it. Also it would have been the perfect place for a final battle with Corephyus storming the gates and our keep upgrades and agents actually playing a role in how difficult the final battle was. That was a very huge missed opportunity.

DAO was remarkable for the tightness of the story, it's suspense and the acting (including Tim Curry and the Flemeth character acted by well-known Kate Mulgrew)

I feel extremely dumb.

I have been playing DA:O since its release and I have only just realized Tim Curry was Howe.

2. Ability to make beautiful and high-quality screenshots, without third-party programs.
3. Tactical camera as DAO.
4. Less MMO-style quests.
5. Improved romances as DAO.
6. Return the scale of relations with party members.
7. Robes for mages and more armor models. My female characters do not want to go in tight pants.

I would like it for the next Dragon Age game to have ZERO returning characters from previous games, especially the past protags/heros..... NO MORE CULLEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am getting tired of seeing and hearing from them. I would like to discover Thedas without past characters being involved. I would like to get to know new characters, and be able to bond with them. The past is the past and the future is the future. I grind my teeth so hard when people ask Bioware to have the return of the Hero of Ferelden (Our Warden). It's bad enough that Bioware essentially ruined my lore by sending my warden off to find the cure for the calling... just let it be and let our minds dictate what happens to our past characters.

Also no more of this Mage vs Templars crap. I do would like to see the Elves finally stand their ground, and retake back their heritage and land from the humans. I would like to be able to side either with the Dalish or with the humans.

I might like it if the choice=consequence was isolated to the sole game itself and the past choices only affect passing dialogue or codex entries. It just doesn't seem to work well for Dragon Age. By now, my expectation of imported files effecting game events has lowered significantly, so maybe it's best if the choice=consequence stay within one game and save the gaming creators the headache of trying to work with imported information, and save the gamers the disappointment of expecting so much from these past game choices.

Well, I haven't actually played DA:I for a good while, or been to the forums. One reason is KSP. But the major reason is some emotional quirk. I now feel tainted and impure by touching anything from EA or Bioware. I'd mainly blame their marketing and PR tactics. I just detest them.

I actually like DA:I though. It's not the game that I would have wanted. Not the direction and style I wanted to see for DA. And the combat is a horrible failure, possibly the worst game content I've ever seen. But there is still a lot of fabulous things in DA:I. It's enjoyable enough.

Since DA has thoroughly lost its original soul, the superior direction and style of DA:O, and also lost its original audience, I think the best thing they can do now is to stick pretty close to the concepts of DA:I. It's reasonably successful. But do try to improve some things:

Combat - of course. And the utterly uninteresting and pointless character progress system. Start over from scratch. A big source of the problems seem to be that it's designed for MP.

Also try to get more focus on the story. Not necessarily a more forced story, but more focus on it.

A more serious tone and atmosphere. This - I think - is the main point where TW3 has an advantage. In other ways, I absolutely don't want anything like TW.

User interface is so directly ugly and clumsy that it considerably undermines the enjoyment of playing the game. Throw away and make entirely new.

As for endings, considering a certain dlc and an infamous ME game, please do remember that most people play games for the goal of winning !

(edit) P.S. And yes, new characters. I didn't much like your DA2 cast in DA2 either. Get over DA2 and throw it away, instead of this pushing as much as possible of its "iconic" flavor down our throats. You can't prove you were right in destroying DA:O. DA2 was a failure.

That was a very huge missed opportunity.

Indeed, I would have liked something similar to what happened in Neverwinter Nights 2. Defending the castle would make an excellent climax, if not a rising action.

Initially I did a lot of requisition quests because I thought they'd be important, then I stopped when I realised it just gained me "power", which I had oodles of anyway. If we do gather things to make tents or puzzle boxes, I want them to mean something. I'm thinking of the Mercy Crest or the specialisation tools.

I love the wide open areas. Keep doing that.

I want more of the decisions from the past games to be important. In Inquisition, the only ones that really mattered were the ones about Morrigan's baby, Hawke's personality, and which warden accompanied Hawke.

EDIT: I almost forgot! Make the armour practical. I found a pointy-topped helmet in the Hissing Wastes that was very stylish, but come on, the point would make it easy to knock off. Remember the banter where Iron Bull says breast-shaped cups on armour are a weakness? It's perfectly possible to make armour both stylish and practical.

The most wanted improvement is:

hair, Hair, HAIR, H A I R!!!

Edit: sorry... I dont mean you cant make proper hair. I mean you cant make anything but fugly hair!

In Origins we had to be a Grey Warden.  In DA2 we had to be a Human.  In DAI we had to be Inquisitor.

How about having the main character storyline be complimented by a counter-storyline.  I don't mean it has to be a bad guy storyline choice either.  What if in Origins (for example), the character was guided toward being a Grey Warden and rejected the idea.  He/she could still visit all the locations, meet all the people, do all the quests, but at the very last scene he/she might reluctantly be the supporting character while an NPC Grey Warden kills the dragon.

This doesn't actually allow the player to deviate from the storyline, but it makes the Player FEEL like they have the choice to deviate from the storyline.

For that to have worked in DAO, they'd need to cook up a sensible reason for why you'd want to do all those things in the first place if you're not invoking the warden treaties. Seems like two main storylines involving the same players has the potential to get messy, or (much more likely) neutered to ensure coherence.

Are we still allowed to post suggestions for DA4?  It seems to be another thread about being like a certain other game that bored me to tears watching my boyfriend play a big chunk of it :P

I really liked DAI.  I think they should continue to refine it in the direction they've got.  Most of my suggestions would be minor tweaks that everyone pretty much wants (more hair options in the CC, a "hold position" command that works).  I wanted to see Tevinter, Dorian, and Maevaris, and that's where all the clues they've given us are tending anyway.

I don't think the next character should be gifted-with-special-powers type, because that could get old quickly.  More "evil" options would be nicer as well.  My one big disappointment with the base DAI game was that that that BioWare specialty - the awesome, massive lair before the boss battle - was missing.  DAI needed an invaded Citadel, a burning Denerim, a Collector's Base, or a war-zone Kirkwall in the lead-up to Corypheus.

I have one other very specific request - if we're going to Tevinter, I want to see Barindur.  It's the Pompeii of Tevinter - a city instantly destroyed in volcanic ash, and flash-frozen in time.  I think it would make a neat adventuring environment.

I just really want to read that Bioware is getting to work on DA 4.  The ending to DA:1, Trespasser, was very intriguing.  Opened up all kinds of powerful narrative potential, i really want to see the options they offer for resolving the cosmic dilemma they've set up.   I see lots of demands in the threads - More of this!  Less of that! - but i think whatever the the creative people at Bioware do will be excellent.   It's going to take a couple of years to follow through with the same brilliant storytelling, the same great character definition.   What i want to know is that they're going ahead with it.   Make it original and make it deep, fellas!  Show us them Kozmik implications!

Since we've been invited to express preferences, i'll name just one: get rid of the 8-skill limit, puhleese.

somebody suggested allowing modding.  Skyrim has tremendous replay value thanks to modding.  But I can imagine that it's a big additional job, so i'll understand if it's omitted.

Briefly, i see lots of requests for better hair - i gather hair that moves realistically puts a lot of extra demands on the graphics processor - i just upgraded mine to play DA:I; i don't want to have to buy another one this soon, so i'd ask you not get carried away by unrealistic demands.

Keep 'em coming!

1. Stay true to the previous Dragon Ages if you write yourself into a corner ask a fan to help many many fans would happily help for free and with very little to no mention just for the chance

2. Better hair I mean seriously about a half dozen maybe more bald options yet few short hair options and even less long hair options was a bit of a failure

3. Don't release it on a previous gen system if you're gonna screw them over I was angry and thought of keeping away from any future Dragon Age games and I'm sure there are others who felt that way.

4. Stick to the same combat system maybe upgrade it a bit but nothing too massive to change I didn't like DA2 to begin with because it was such a huge difference from DAO

5. Have our LI around with our past protagonists a bit it annoyed me how Merril wasn't with Hawke when her personality in a relationship would have dictated she go with Hawke they explained the separation between our warden and Morrigan well but with Lelliana it was barely a conversation with no motives able to be felt.

6. Give us a peak at Kal Sharok it's bugged me since I played my dwarf noble origin and I really really want to see it.

7. Mix the friendship rivalry system with the approval disapproval system.

8. Keep to the character scheme you have it down great most don't feel like a chore to keep even most of the ones you dislike you like to dislike them only one that felt a chore to me was Sten.

9. Give us an option at the beginning of the game to put in the sexual orientation we wish to play or at least put in an option to put potential love interests down lightly or both.

10. Give us the option to romance our own race of either gender if we want to I mean what's wrong with two dwarves getting together or what's wrong with playing a male elf who can get with a female elf.

11. Don't revert to DAO and DA2 on having a hidden companion in DLC

12. Depending on choices from the past maybe introduce a recently made golem companion and if the choices were different introduce a dwarf in it's place they could be the same person with only a few different events and the potential lack of memory for the golem.

1. Better hairstyles

2. The option to be more ruthless/evil/self-serving

3. The return of multiple playable races

4. Being able to side with the Dalish/Elves in an uprising.

5. Return of the Hero of Ferelden.

6. New Protagonist

YES to all of the above! but I would add the return of dual wield warriors (elven if nothing else) and the ability to change weapons from melee to ranged like DAO and the return of the radial wheel for talents and sustained abilities.

Give me aesthetically pleasing armour, If someone wants girly armour then they should be allowed to have it without condemnation for their choice. I want more realistic armour in the vein of DAO and even ancient Roman armour, Viking armour etc. Give us more race and gender appropriate armour, I loved the Sentinel Armour from the Temple of Mythal for instance. More of this please and less of the impractical armour from DAI which would kill anyone in an actual battle. And holding up Iron Bull's comment about breastplates/armour is so ridiculous when you take into account what he's wearing.

edit: forgot, bring back the relationship friendship/rivalry bar, in DAI I had no idea where Inquisitor was in relationships with companions.

1. Proper sidequests. See the Witcher 3 for examples on how to do sidequests in a partially open world RPG.

2. More focus on story and characters, less focus on exploration.

3. Proper settlements. Val Royeaux was extremely disappointing. See Oxenfurt and Novigrad in the Witcher 3 for examples of how to do cities in a partially open world approach.

4. A protagonist with a more fleshed out backstory.

5. A return to fully cinematic conversations with non-party NPCs. The lack of them in DA:I made the game less immersive in my opinion, compared to DA:O or DA2.

6. Better hair options in the CC.

7. More grit, less cheese.
