Weave together the disparate systems and seep them in Dragon Age lore. I want every act I carry out in Dragon Age to drip with the lore. Involve the characters in everything. Have every action affect a real character's life and actions.
When we specialised in DAI, we followed the path of one of our companions. So why were some random, lifeless characters we never got to know brought in to train us? Imagine a real, story-driven side-quest with Solas on how to become a Rift Mage. Have him bring you to an old ruin and spend the time drifting in and out of it's Fade versions. Or have Vivienne bring you to an Orlesian jousting tournament to teach about the spirit of the Knight Enchanter.
When I encountered the Avvar in the Jaws of Hakkon I had the option to bring back the Skywatcher - but I never really knew the Skywatcher. There were so many opportunities to get to know him - he could have been a guide in the Fallow Mire - introducing the Avvar through his character and interaction with other Avvar. He could have been a friend in JoH - perhaps stirring up a rivalry with Svarah Sun-Hair. We could have developed friends in the hold - instead of having them play fetch-quest markers - and have been upset when they fell in battle beside us against the Hakkonites.
And what of Private Whittle in the Hinterlands? Why did he join the Inquisition? Perhaps he didn't get along with his Captain. Maybe you might have had the opportunity to intervene on the local Inquisition priorities. Maybe this would have had an effect when you meet Teagan in Trespasser (instead of having him be a one-note annoyance).
I do love the Dragon Age world - and have built some great characters in what Bioware have given me - but it seems like a waste not to weave the wonderful lore and companions into every action, delivering cause and consequence and surprising us in ways we might have seen coming. I don't want a legendary schematic load randomly in a store - I want to earn my Masterwork Archon Staff Schematic by defeating an evil Archmage and then raiding his library.
