Today I decided to play the GI. :D

It didn't go well.

At all.

First I tried a build missing out Proximity Mine.

Took the Widow to a Gold game.

Even though I maxed fitness it seemed far too flimsy to survive even without Hunter Mode. By wave 5 all my rage-gel was gone. By wave 7 I'd given up on surviving and just kept letting myself die.

And then I got a headache from Hunter Mode.

So I went and had a walk and let the headache fade.

Changed to a different more proximity-mine based build although this time I took the Harrier (the cooldown on the powers was too slow imo for the Widow).

Still just as flimsy. Went down still just as much. Still got a headache from Hunter Mode. Realised the proximity mine wasn't doing much but the recharge was a little better but a lack of Hunter Mode meant not as much damage.

Oh, and then there's the fact Hunter Mode was making my screen see DOUBLE. So I had absolutely no idea which enemy I was shooting (the one on the top - which I figured out to be the real ones) or the ones on the bottom, which were like some Hunter-Mode-created illusions which I've NEVER had before on the PS3 or PC (then again it was my first time using HM on the PC)

So the games with the GI were full of headaches, rage-gel and confusion as to why my GI was in some kind of drunken haze and seeing double? I mean I don't like HM at the best of times because of the **** it puts on your screen - like Krogan Rage and Devastator Mode, but seeing double just made me confused.

I have absolutely got no idea what is going wrong, but the GI seems kind of useless for me. Any ideas?

Try Salarian Infiltrator instead.  You get a nice Cloak > Energy Drain > Shoot combo with Disruptor Ammo to defeat Shield Gate, and Tech Bursts from your "friends" that give you the kill credit when they try to do a Biotic Explosion.

Energy Drain also makes you tankier, so long as you Drain the appropriate targets at the opportune times.

And you'll still have Proxy Mine.  Make sure to take it to at least 5.  Rank 6 Proxy Mine or Rank 3 Fitness is the choice you will have to make.

Essentially swap Hunter Mode for Energy Drain and you turn GI into SI.  Both have their advantages, but SI I think is a bit more user friendly.

Plus your tongue will bring all the girls to the yard

The GI is tough when you first use it.

As you get more experience playing, you will eventually try the GI and realize what a killing machine it is. When starting in Gold with this kit, use a cyclonic and stronghold package.

Cooldown and weapon weight doesn't matter if you only cloak right before you attack. You will have a 3 second CD (unless using a very light loadout, like a Hurricane, then you will get faster recharge)

The PM is used as a debuff tool and area stagger on enemies, always cloak / PM / shoot in that order .. it will help keep you alive and you will inflict %20 more damage to all enemies hit by PM (always always ALWAYS take evo 5a)

On PS3, we get extra vertical white lines on our HM display, which are not intended; I've never seen double though ..

SE is another great kit, though underrated.  I give him a Cryo Ammo Lancer, Double Incinerate to Chilled Evo, and use a combination of hardcover and Energy Drain facetanking to score the 20 Headshots Medal 2 Waves in.  He is a beast.

I don't have the Lancer yet on PC XD

I used the Mattock for a Bronze solo with the SE. Worked quite well imo. :)

It's a matter of experience with the character, as the GI is one of the most powerful character in the game. Some remarks on your post :

- weapon weight isn't an issue with infiltrators, since you can hide the cooldowns with Tactical Cloak (if you cloak, then use Prox Mine, you will get a 3s cooldown whatever weapons you're using);

- Hunter Mode makes you see through walls, but doesn't "double" anything. I'm not sure what you're refering to here;

- besides the juggy, Geth have a good level of shields but only a very low health, so when your shields are broken, you need to react very quickly (finish the enemy / dodge / take cover / use an ops) to survive. You'll get the right timing after some hours with him. Using cyclonics to increase the shields is also very helpful ;

I propose you here a popular build that can perform well whatever the mission : build.

Hunter Mode was doubling my vision. Like there were three cannibals in front of me, I could see SIX. Only three of them were real, three were hallucinations. :P Thanks for the advice though. :)

it gets better with practice.. i had a friend used a no fitness, no cyclonic sniper GI, and i thought she was crazy at the beginning ;)

also shield power cells on the GI are much more survivable than cyclonics, especially on plat.

Did you change the resolution of the game? It is one of the reasons that can cause the doubling of enemies.

The si is so much more user friendly. I use duration cloak. And a viper or valiant I think. It's a beast!

I have the same problem. Gi, javelin, kill 2/3 guys in front, get blindsided cos your scoped. Nope. Geth plasma shotty all the way.

As Slasher pointed out, resolution can mess up hunter mode.

Once you get it fixed and get used to having the hunter mode overlay on the screen you will love it, it's just such an Amazing Power to have.

He's squishy as hell, but the damage he can do is just amazing, hope it works out!

And yeah, GI/Javelin is just stupid OP once you get the hang of it.

I don't know how to help the "Seeing double problem" but as far as gameplay goes as a GI main.

Depending on what weapon or build, I prefer my claymore build. The GI without a doubt is a glass cannon. Basically you wanna play smart, kill what you can kill and making sure you have some sort of cover to fall back on when uncloaked. Depending on what weapon for example javelin and the claymore making sure your reload cancelling is on point.

Also as max said the PM stagger will keep you alive and going cloak, PM and then shoot which is the usual order you can go by. You can go vice versa however for example since I use claymore and I'm confident with my aim I also like to cloak, shoot and then PM.

Imo you just have to play with him, learn what not to do as well as what to do. He's powerful af but he's fragile, as has been covered ad nauseum. As long as you can get the cloak/PM/shoot/cancel/shoot/cloak/pm thing down, and abuse RHA and keep an eye on your aggro, it should be fairly profitable after that. Sorry I don't have any better space magical formula than that.

Tie a flashlight to your head and keep it on.  Speak in clicks and clacks with the occasional chirp.  You will soon understand the GI and what makes him tick.  Then purchase some light bending camouflage, wrap it around you, and admire your invisibility in the mirror.  Next, go to a nursing home that happens to hire beautiful nurses.  You'll have to train hard for this part, because it goes against human nature.  You have to be able to focus purely on the nurses (your targets) while ignoring any elderly who might happen to fall and need your help, even if they are lying right at your feet.  Eye on the prize, my friend.  Soon, your subconscious will tune them out, as long as you focus hard enough.

Finally, purchase glasses if you don't already own a pair, and affix kaleidoscopes to each lens.  Get used to this view until you can drive 20 minutes without plowing anything or anyone over.  You may want to do this before the previous step, since you may be able to tune the cries for help and moans of pain and suffering out at that point, undermining the training.

Good luck, soldier.

Once you practice enough with the GI and get to where you aren't dying then you'll slowly realize why the GI is revered so much around here. Stupidly powerful kit overall.

"What can this unit own for you?"

It's all about: recognition, RHA, stagger, and quick killing.  Recognize the spawn, get yourself into a good position, utilize your PM for staggering over a wide AOE, kill from right to left mostly depending the enemy type, check your surroundings then wash rinse, repeat. On PM it's pretty much common sense but don't fire right at one enemy but kind of in the middle of a couple that are close together, the stagger is important almost as much so as the debuff on smaller enemies because you'll own most anything with a headshot. Sniper rifles are awesome but spread weapons like SMGs, ARs, shotguns, and pistols like the Talon are really good as well because of HM.

At least that's with pistols, shotguns, etc. Sniper rifles are a little different.

Is there a way to reduce the intensity of HM so it won't give me a headache? It even gave me a headache on the PS3.

I know that there is a texmod that removes the added brightness and all the lines on the screen but still highlights enemies in red. It used to be on the old BSN but I don't know of any sources for that mod now.

You could try searching for it, I guess.

Edit: Here you go.

Seems like all of your problems are related to HM giving you headaches. Once that is fixed it should be smooth sailing. Just abuse the heck out of the wall hack.
