The first and foremost OBVIOUS thing would be to learn how to use TacCloak defensively and know about shieldgate. You don't need fitness for that.

I've settled with 0 fitness for infiltrators in general. Not for Shadow and little Shadow (QFI), though - they have melee specs. I run a detonator GI (falcon or venom), so there's a couple of fitness point that went into it. But any sniper infiltrator build usually uses no fitness at all. The drell has full fitness - but that's not for shields, that's for the movement speed and homerun grenade sucks anyway. And since they nerfed AIU melee it has a no fitness build, too.
This can be rough vs twitchy foes in tight quarters ala Glacier. Just ran a GPS GI this morning in Marcin's lobby. I could use that GPS tracking help from across the upper lab/room, but the basement & LZ were different stories. I'd go through 5 shots and land 1 or 2. Marcin was likely wondering why the frig he kept hearing shots go off...yet rarely a mention of my GPS in the killfeed.

Shooting a Nemesis is tricky for a lot of guns 
, I always pop a prox mine first to make sure they're staggered.
When enemies are in very shot range I tend to use the GPS like a normal shotgun, the projectile travel time is negligible on host so it performs *almost* like a hit-scan weapon, you still have to predict their movement beyond point blank range, though.

And you don't ever want to get rid of proxy mine. Ever. I know it seems like a weird power at first and that it's his only power. But you'll love it soon enough. Plus it's his only stagger move. Stagger is OP.
OP do you happen to have an AMD Radeon graphics card? If yes then eyestrain/double vision/headache etc etc is most likely caused by that. I used to get a lot of eyestrain and severe headache when I had an HD6870 and enabled hunter mode on geth infiltrator. But after changing to Nvidia GPU I dont get eye strain & headache with hunter mode and other screen altering effects like bloodlust or rage.
Also you should try a game or two with Blackwidow on GI. It will allow you to circumvent shield gate a bit easily compared to Widow or you could use Phasic Rounds ammo on single shot sniper rifles.
If you skip last rank of Proxi mine and rank 5 and 6 on Tact Cloak you can buff shields and reduce shield recharge delay and combined with Stronghold package and shield power cells shields will start charging almost instantly. Getting tact cloak rank 6 and skipping 4 and 5 on Advanced HW will make GI truly a glass cannon and its a bit difficult to keep it alive during pug gold and plat games.
Try these two builds first one is for Widow and second for Black Widow (which is my fav sniper rifle

My build is SLIGHTLY different. I pretty much gave up on getting enough shields to not run him with a cyclonic, so I min-maxed a little more.

(I also use it on my alt account with their best shotgun - the katana - and it DOMINATES Silver, newbs shouldn't complain about not having the guns, my alt plays SIlver, can play Gold)
