Dragonborn obviously. A mortal born with the soul of a dragon.
FUS ROH DAH!

Alternatively, we are touched by a Titan, granting - naturally - immunity to petrification!
Yes, that was a joke.
I hope the "quirk" is a missing left arm...
+1000.
Considering how powerful Solas (he can turn people to stone with his eyeballs) is I think the new protaganist is going to possesses a fragment or even the essence of an old god.
DA4 protagonist is a golem - Solas can't turn him to stone since he already is made of stone.
I forsee: You'll be a slave in Tevinter that will fit a specific criteria that the Inquisition is looking for. This will fall under the auspice of being a special trait or gaining a special ability that the Inquisition has been searching for. This ability will be instrumental in disrupting the plans of the enemy while inspiring or threatening your allies to victory.
Inquisition agent/former agent if disbanded go to Tevinter to look into mysteries...
Either a Dwarf that can use magic or Elf born as a slave in Tevinter but escaped her/his bonds or a human that is a rebel noble who wants reform.
Is really really good at killing stuff, and breaking stuff.
Although being able to proceed through the game as a pacifist would be really cool too. I know
Perhaps we'll start off as a slave in Tevinter? That would justify the main character being any class (as a slave would be untrained) and race. This would also set up a nice growth of character strength over the course of the game.
Perhaps Dorian or the Inquisition will save our protagonist?
I'm curious, is there any chance that main character will be the inquisitor? Just a small one?
Doubt it the Inquisitor said that they need people he does not know. So new protagonist, of course the Inquisitor will still be involved just like Hawke was in DAI. So I am settling in the theory of old god possession.

That's the origin I'm hoping for since I believe Tevinter is about the only location where that origin is a possibility.

Heh. Hilarious.
Imagine:
*Pride does glowy-eyes*
*protagonist not petrified*
Pride: "Fenedhis!
Me: *falls off the chair laughing*

I think it's likely for us to be Dorian's protege.
ALthough Dorian or the Inquisitor saving us (hmm, buying us?) makes as much sense.
The new protagonist will have severe tourettes.

Nah, I bet the Inquisitor will be our older mentor figure. And die protecting us from Solas because "your time hasn't come yet".
-I've grown stronger since our last encounter, Inquisitor!
-Strike me, and I shall become more powerful than you can imagine!

No! That's not true, that's impossible!
I was actually thinking the same thing. There have been five blights. We've seen Mythal and Fen'Harel. 9-5-2=2. Maybe one is Sandal or a third party who will be introduced in the next game. That leaves one Old God soul for the next protagonist.
Are you assuming that the Elvhen Gods and Old Gods are the same? Because I'm pretty sure that they're not, especially with confirmation that the Elvhen Gods were really just powerful elves.
I'm not sure about the protag (getting Fenris style lyrium tattoos would be cool) but I know I'll be eyeing the mage companions with suspicion.
Alternatively, we are touched by a Titan, granting - naturally - immunity to petrification!
Yes, that was a joke.
If drinking lyrium grants the Templars the abilty to cancel magic I guess Titans have the same kind of abilities but in a much bigger degree. Cole said that the bodies of the templars try to connect to something older and bigger than they are, and I guess that at this point it's clear that he's referring to Titans.
So it would be pretty cool and convenient that the next protagonist gets his powers from a Titan

This.
