Anyone else think Varric went too far with his joke?

If you don't know, if you romanced Cassandra, Varric basically tells her that the Inquisitor is going to propose to her at the Winter Palace in Trespasser. Except, he was just messing with her and she didn't find out until the Inquisitor told her that wasn't the case.

Now I don't know about you, but that honestly felt mean spirited and highly inappropriate. I know it's suppose to be humor, and I know Varric is Varric, but I would think Varric would know his limits when it comes to trolling Cassandra. Imagine a friend doing this to your significant other in real life. You'd probably wouldn't appreciate it I'd imagine.

Of course this isn't a big deal I know, but I thought this was really strange.

Varric has some seriously deep-seated aggression toward Cassandra and it isn't completely unjustified. She did completely uproot him from his home and drag him across half a continent against his will. She kidnapped him. Yeah, he's pretty chill about the whole thing, but if he did string her along a bit, I wouldn't blame him. I mean, it isn't as if the inquisitor wasn't ready to propose anyway.

If that's your idea of too far, Shale must really scare you with all her "kill everyone" jokes.

She also tries to assault him for something relatively frivolous.

It was kinda in poor taste if the inquisitor and cassandra are in a relationship; but excluding that, i thought it was funny

Was that supposed to only be an option for those that romanced Cass? I got that dialogue too, and no way she and my female elf were hooking up.

I'm wiling to give her a pass for that (but I'm not going to blame Varric, either). She traveled across half the world and he flat-out lied to her. I'd be angry too. Mind you, I understand why Varric lied, and I am grateful for it, but I understand why Cassandra is mad. When I'm playing "self insert" Inquisitor, he tells them both to take a deep breath and walk away. Done is done. And then he checks in on Varric to make sure he's OK.

I don't think he went to far, I think he's still amazed at how much Cassandra believes his story's and jokes. Also makes good comical responses from Cass.

Varric is pretty justified in how she treats her tbh or do oyu not remember the interrogation in DA2?

Well, he didn't actually say that. Cassandra admits that she "filled in some blanks" herself.

Varric's interrogation was years ago by this point. Apparently the guy can't let bygones be bygones. It's not like she tortured him.

I think that Trespasser Varric knows he can push Cassandra's buttons and Cassandra knows that she shouldn't take him so seriously, so it becomes only a relatively (compared to DAI and especially DA2) light hearted affair.

They're pretty much friends. Now HOW much of friends they are can depend on your actions in DAI and your headcanon as the audience. But still, I don't think Varric held malicious intent and I don't think Cassandra received it as such.

I have to say, that joke happened to all 3 of my Inquisitors and not one of them romanced Cassandra, the part where Inquisitor is proposing to someone. It's a blanket, cover-all joke where he simply mentions Inquisitor and proposal in one chat to Cassandra, and nothing else. She admits to filling in the blanks herself.

Cassandra should not have fell for it in the first place. Why would the Inquisitor propose to Cassandra at the Winter Palace of all places, at a stressful event where people are trying to dismantle or control the Inquisitor and the Inquisition? That is not very romantic, and if she turned him down during such a time

Spoiler
that would be a huge emotional blow to them both. Why would the Inquisitor tell Varric that he is going to to propose to Cassandra in the first place? I could see Hawke telling Varric if he was going to propose to Merrill or Isabela, but not the Inquisitor. Finally, if the Inquisitor was going to propose, and he actually told Varric about it, then I doubt Varric would have ruined the Inquisitor's surprise. Varric is not the type to do that. Cassandra should have been suspicious as soon as Varric told her, due to the fact that he was telling her.

I'm more disturbed that Cassandra is gullible enough to believe Varric. It's Varric. VARRIC. Cass, he didn't even tell you the truth when you interrogated him.

Bae ily, but don't listen to short stuff that tells tall tales.

But yeah it went a little far. Partly because Cass is a hopeless romantic.

1. It isn't exclusive to Cassandra, so you can't argue it was personal. It also happens to Josephine for example.

2. When it was referring to a Cass romance, she said she was the one to fill in the blanks.

Her being the Divine actually makes it better.
