So I have decided to do a study, survey, test. Whatever you want to call it. Starting Sunday I will play games with only PUGs and I will take notes of how well they do or how awful they are. And see if any of them can beat me.
Feel free to post your notes on how your games go with PUGs
Week one:
Lost to a skilled PUG
Week two:
O-2 kill me now

During my 100+ hours of MP, I've exclusively done PUGs, possibly because I am anti-social.

I believe these two gif's sum up my feelings on the subject adequately.
Just like to point out, it's not dead.

LOL "Good Pugs" ....
I am a serial pugger..which means ..all I do is PUG
every once in awhile I am shocked by how good 1 of them are..1 .....
Once every 30-40 or so games 1 pug will shock me by scoring higher than I thought they would...

I Just started playing a few weeks back. Probably have 30-40 hours in and all i do is pug. I apparently suck as I just got kicked from a silver match tonight. I don't really care, I've been trying to play out of my comfort zone with more front line types like the krogan vanguard. How I keep missing with the heavy melee I don't know. I'm in a spot where bronze is a bit too easy, but I usually rank bottom of the barrel in silver.(and when people bump us to gold without saying anything, I spend more time face down than on my feet)
Overall though I like to pug, like one of the above posters I'm anti-social. For me grouping with people I know usually makes me tense. Using Wow as an example back in the day when I played it, I hated when one of my friends would message me about doing a dungeon. I felt pressured into doing it, even though no pressure was intended. But Pugs I never feel pressure, and if the teamwork sucks and we get wiped who cares I'm still having fun.

I dropped into a PUG with some guy called "nat in the closet" or something...it was terribad.
But...yeah...PUGs are bad. Except for when they're good. But I think the servers are psychic, because recently every time I've had a run of bad PUGs and hit the U/U/G search dreading what kind of BS it's gonna throw at me, it gives me a BSNer.
I'm gonna leave the unintentional semi-pun there.
Hahahahahahaha I said semi lolololz

Pugs do get a bad name, cuz most of us complain about how bad they are rather than trying to help them.

HEY! Me and my friends taught an N7 8 how to play Gold and Platinum once. We didn't even troll him or anything.

I personally like playing pugs because it makes it fun to play. And you don't know what to expect. Plus I feel like I improve better when I play pugs.
Pugs are a random, chaotic element that can make the game harder as much as easier. Watching after them can put you into situations that you would not have gotten yourself into if you had been solo/duo. They are like a mini-objective.

I learned to solo by playing with pugs. Since I've been almost exclusively pugging for 3+ years, I wonder if that is why I don't have much patience for solos?
Playing with pugs usually keeps things interesting for me. If all I did was play with lobbies full of good players, then the only challenges are how fast can we get this done (rockets optional), who will hit various milestones first (or everyone fails to hit a certain milestone, and we all get 10WS), and "Can I find something to kill?"
I like the mini-objectives where I have to figure out how to keep the pugs in the LZ on Ghost or Goddess alive for nearly two minutes on extraction, or revive the guy who was role-playing a Krogan a little too well.
The funny thing is, I am finding more lobbies full of good players these days. I can't really complain about that either -- I find that I am a better player the more I play with good players (and that does explain why I am still such a scrub). For this reason, I suspect a "scientific" investigation into this topic now will only yield results pertinent to, er, now. I expect OP will write this caveat into his "Limitations" section.

If you find a bsn'er while pugging, do they still count as a pug? Because wether you do or don't count them as pugs will make a substantial difference to your results.
I don't count them as pugs

Try mastering a plat/gold :
1) 11 waves of random 1/4 hit spawn nuking (esp. during objectives),
2) mini monster-magnets with lvl3 tempests , pulling enemies from miles yonder to you while you're minding your own business trying to do solo-objectives, (alone).
3) dying literally under your feet, only to medi-gel , when you (irresponsibly) do change your mind in the last second.
4) scattering enemies all over, resulting in gnats hiding in the smallest crevices imaginable. Geth scan 360 deg of that.
5) overwriting primes with salad dressing,
6) failing any communication means (contextually +conceptually)
7) ...
on top of the predictable "game mechanics".
In short, plan to survive the unimaginably unpredictable, then,
in the words of Rudyard Kipling, 'If' u dig this, without grumble , you'd be a true dawg. (slightly adapted from original for forum audience)
Sidenote. BoTB is simply the entry exam for legends. Mod crack this!

After completing a very intense study session last night, I have to come to the conclusion that it's not global warming we should be worried about. It's PUGs.
