How many of these "bad pug" war stories are down to genuinely out-of-their-depth players; and how many are, in truth, perfectly competent players who simply score low because they just can't keep up with the top-tier players around here?

When I'm playing in a game with a top-tier BSNer or two, the scoreboard can end up looking like the "bad pug" screenshots that some of you like to post; but the top-tier players don't expect me to keep up with them, and don't mock me for failing to do so.  I contribute what I can and (hopefully) have fun doing so.

(When I'm in a game without top-tier players, the board tends to look a bit more even, assuming we even manage to extract without a competent person in the mix )

When put next to you guys, anyone who isn't one of you guys is going to look bad.

I know for a fact some posters complain about PUGs being bad simply because they scored x amount higher than they did. I've only got an issue when they don't do the objectives, and don't gel. I don't have an issue as long as you're actually trying.

Playing PUGs is like a box of chocolates. You never really know what you are going to get, but it's probably going to be a gooey mess.

Update.

Well week one and I ran into a PUG who knew what he was doing, completely dominated me and made me rethink my life.

Here is to week two

This is no doubt all about my SmashLashDept during wave 1 in our Condor plat match last night.  On wave 1, I totally rekt blinky flashlights -- on wave 1 (being the first wave).  Both you & mcquotables were like..."woah, is this dude 'The One'?"

Totally set the stage for what was soon to come.

*And what came was me popping rage-gels like candy...watching both you guys rack up 200K+ while I finished with 120K+, solidly in 3rd.

Just met a PUG who still had 0 points on wave 5 playing Gold.

I literally have no idea how that's possible.

I largely agree, I just want to feel like the players I'm in the lobby with are going to try to play the "right" way, do objectives, don't rush into spawns and get stomped/start a revive circlejerk, dumb stuff like that. Idgaf about being outscored, if we get to W11 and extract, my creds are the same regardless if I have 0 pts or 450k pts.

Having said that, I always load into UUG games hoping and praying this lvl 14 HA with 40 CP is an alt and knows what they're doing....and I'm always disappointed lol. Those are the PUG's I don't like to play with. Learn the game in Bronze or Silver, or party up, don't make me a part of your clusterfuckery.

I might be misremembering how it works since I haven't played in a while, but I believe that's impossible if the player was there from the start. The points from the wave 3 objective should've been applied.

Yeah, I can't even count how many times I have clicked "Quick Match" and joined in somewhere down the line.

Because so many PUGs.

Was in a lobby with two Batguards the other day.

Both of them were sync killed by Banshees about 5 waves in a row.

And they still didn't learn that they shouldn't biotic charge a Banshee and kept doing it, even on extraction.

And kept getting sync killed.

I was the only person who extracted.

Extraction's overrated, whats the fun of being a Batguard if you can't charge/punch all the things (including Banshees)? Spectating half the match is just an occupational hazard of being a badass grumpy Batarian vanguard.

Stop giving the young bad ideas!

....I wish I could say I "never" charge banshees.... but my Justicar lives in their face, which is pretty much the same thing. (I had someone point out just the other day how many "risks" I take as my Justicar, my answer, of course, was that is why she is so much fun!)

Part of this might be issues with transitioning to higher levels.  I only play silver and bronze so far and I 95+% of the time can get a way with charging a banshee.  And it is one of the things that seems to interrupt a sync kill happening to a teammate.

Oh, nothing wrong with charging a banshee whilst she is fisting one of the decoys. She's too busy and doesn't have enough hands to grab you, too.

LOL..so for my report 2nite....2 LOL scrub-tastic games..I cannot believe how much I scored..seriously, this is a problem that I scored this much...

1st game...Me Salarian Infil w Wraith..drops into a GIP ..on Giant / Geth..Wave 2...I do my thing..energy drain= shotgun blast...I stay away from the LZ campers..R U shocked they were camping the LZ?   1 is a Juggy--1 is a Warlord..they never leave the LZ..they both keep dying / getting stomped....No gels used/ ..nothing..I kept carrying / taking care of the wave..cause I needed the challenge points for everything involved..By wave 9 ..I had it with them....Final Score..Me + 210,000---  #2 = 25,000..---#3 = 16,000   //you would have quit too..

2nd game..this is seriously stupid...Me= Salarian Infil. w Wraith..again I am going for the challenge points..drop into a Dagger / Reapers game..I am just doing my thang again..Energy drain = Head Shot...blasting stuff..the entire game.. I had no idea who I was playing with...When I saw my Lone Survivor score-screen.. I had scored 197,000 points... #2 managed to score 36,000 points..

^^^ Both of these games made me sick. Yes, I do like to be the top scorer at times..but..for these pugs to only contribute this much, as the host?...makes me sick..I hate doing peoples work for them, especially when they can't even handle the higher levels of difficulty...

Agree completely with this. We have all been out of our depths the first times we tried gold, I see nothing wrong with new players wanting to see what Gold looks like. As long as they have sensible equipment (ok guns, some consumables), do objectives (bonus points for multiple people doing the same device, that's the spirit :P) and don't wander off on their own, I won't mind giving them the grand tour. If I land in a gip and wipe, I often just switch to one of my strong kits and give it another shot. As for using consumables, I actually prefer when new players do not use their 2 gels/missiles in the early waves; I'd rather clutch wave 4 than wave 9 after all, though it is cute when someone missiles the very first banshee they see :) rather, I prefer when out-of-their depths players stick together and help saving consumables by reviving.

Having said that, I can solo waves, but it takes me a loooong time, so that might be incentive enough for the other players to make sure I am not the last one standing  :D

When you quick match into a lobby with TMB, PUGs get a bad name. He's not too bad for a PUG.

If ever there was a post that deserved to be QFT'd, it's this.  :)

Extraction's overrated, whats the fun of being a Batguard if you can't charge/punch all the things (including Banshees)? Spectating half the match is just an occupational hazard of being a badass grumpy Batarian vanguard.

And then there's this, which is also true.  He's such a lunatic character, if you don't play him on the edge you're just missing out.  I unlocked him early on my Xbox manifest and I can't tell you how many Psions I succumbed to.  On any other character I'd have been ashamed, but as you say q - with him it's just an occupational hazard.

Now I'm officially looking forward to playing with you!  :D

Problem is that to many want everything right away and try to go directly into gold/platinum, when they should start off with learning the game on Bronze and Silver as you say.

There is no patience in society these days it seem, everything is accessible all the time and we want everything right away, unfortunately that also reflects clearly in this game which is built on the concept of a long progress over time both in terms of understanding the game mechanics and in obtaining better equipment - to many believe they are "special" and have the right to just go out and get what they want, ignoring totally the impact on others. Worst of all are the players that credit hack their way to full manifests and then end up being nothing but a liability to the rest of the team.

ME3 and societal problems all rolled into one.

Well-stated though, I completely agree. We live in a very "microwave" society, perseverance just does not exist.

Oh, the dissonance between

1.

... only play silver and bronze so far and I 95+% of the time can get a way with ...

My mistake - Staying too long in silver settles very bad habits that has to be unlearned anyway.

And
2.

... they should start off with learning the game on Bronze and Silver ...no patience .

Just imagine the boredom if only gold or plat worthy joined a match.

... PUG's : equip, don't equip, circle around and wrinkle your toes. Shoot GSTQ graffiti with ur venom while a DAWG stresses about 'objectives'. Do as u please. A true BSN dawg,by now, can take anything without a groan.
... DAWG's : have fun with ur PUG's - stomp them , support them, eggface over their sync'ed bodies - what else is left?
