IMO, it works like this, either you are a BSNer or a PUG.  You can't be both.  The difference is that PUGs are freaking clueless to anything technical that has to do with this game (i.e. gameplay mechanics).  I should know, I spent my first 300 hours or so as a PUG and my fastest gold solo time was right around 40 minutes.  I've been a BSNer for a little under three months (~50 hours) and just hit my first sub-20.  BSNers just care more about gameplay aspects than PUGs, and hence they aren't clueless.  Now I'm not saying that you have to be a contributor to this forum (or even read this forum) to qualify you as a BSNer - I'm using this term to broadly classify a group of players that care to learn about the gameplay mechanics.

tl;dr: I use the term PUG to describe crap players, lol

It's a nice theory and very neat, but it fails to counter-example. I'm a BSNer, contributor to this forum (most would say overly prolific) and still a totally crap player.

And when I go out looking for a random game, I'm just a pug anyway :P

I'd just like to point out, I agree. I may "only" have about 800hrs logged in game, but I have EASILY spent over 1,000hrs reading up on the mechanics, numbers, BSN, and theorycrafting. When I first made it to gold, I was a Saber Juggernaut, grinding Glacier Cerberus (In retrospect, I was a massochist), and I wanted to be better, that's when I started reading the BSN (And especially a lot of the older posts by people like Peddro), and watched a lot of gold and platinum solos (And Invaderone's gameplay vids) to try and see how "better" people played. I'd never say I was a "great" player (My Gold Solos are still a little under 40mins as a Juggernaut, fire explosions are beautiful), but I can hold my own on Platinum with a decent team, and duo Gold (I just don't have the patience to solo/carry anymore, if the PUGs wont try, why should I waste my missiles and medigel on them?)

Doubtful.  By "crap", I really mean clueless.  You don't have to be "good", or have an innate ability to chain headshots to play smart and effective in this game.  I would not consider myself anything even remotely close to the elite range of the player spectrum.  But this is nothing that an Incendiary Reegar Krogan Soldier w/ AC5 cannot fix.  Case in point: 5 headshots + 25 shotgun kills = substandard play at best, right?  PUGs are unlikely to know about the hidden power of the double stacked reegar incendiary glitching inferno grenades, or how to pick the best waves/spawns for AC5 nuking if they do not browse the forums.

And here's the best part:

KroganSoldier.png

Two no banners w/ 120 and 20 (7twozero is that you!? or an imposter?), and a BotB host with god knows how many promotions.  I bet the host was quite surprised at the clear time and the scoreboard when all was said and done, lol.

..for those of you who enjoy the Hurricane T-Sol..I suggest you give the BPP a shot on him...It almost returns the Blood Pack Punisher to it's single player campaign glory....which I do really miss.

Funny, I decided to finish my SMG mastery and took BPP with TSol and Destroyer .. Verdict: BPP still sucks big time :P

^^^ Agreed...man, I loved the single player campaign Blood Pack Punisher...but the Turian Soldier made the MP version suck a little bit less.

I don't think these pictures tell the whole story though. I personally find the players with huge N7 ratings to many times be ones using quirky combos, simply because they have played all the conventional ones a ton (IMO)

For the N7 20 dude, I bet they were using top level consumables to contribute that much to a 22 min Platinum. Ultimately your match set up determines your ceiling for your performance

I hear what you're saying, but not so in this case.  Host BotB was using AIU w/ Reegar X, Shotgun Amp III, Incendiary IV, GC5, Power Amp IV (really? way to buff that snap freeze, lol),  Interestingly, I had to tell N7 20 guy to take consumables, lol.  He ended up taking: Claymore X, Acolyte X, Incendiary II, Cyclonic II, Shotgun Amp III, and GC5.  And for me (alt account), I took Reegar VII, Harrier II, Incendiary III, Cyclonic III, Shotgun Amp III, and AC5.

*edit:  And for the record, the host played very well (me and him had to clutch a couple waves when N7 20 guy got sync'd), and more to his credit, he didn't vote to kick either of us (I tend to get a lot of kick votes in plat lobbies, probably due to my scrubby numbers and equipment).

How do you lose to anyone in a co-op multiplayer game?

TGI/Harrier/Armored Compartments/no concept of helping with objectives and/or the nuisance that is Wave 11 spawn nuking.

simple formula for a "PUG win"

I ran into the 2nd biggest a**hole I have played with today. Low level HE with Carrier London/toasters/G We started as duo against my better judgement. Absolutely refused to help on any objective waves. Wave 3 upload, other side of map, wave 6 targets, no where to be found, wave 10 devices, the reason only 2 done because I bled out doing 3rd. Granted, I played like absolute garbage with BatSol, but wave 7, I bled out because, again I sucked, but both teammates were beside this guy and he didn't even attempt to revive and they were up top with no enemies around. Thought it might be BSN alt, but SE II as equip gave it away that it was a noob. I will give him credit, he did clutch waves 7 and 9. I should have rage quit, but since I've never done that, I didn't want to start

Nah pUUGs are fine 99% of time, at least on PC.  Also noone ever uses the mic on PC

Except for those 4 guys who don't speak, but have the mic on 'always on' anyway -_-

I wish more people used mics on PC for PUGs. It would be super great to be able to actually communicate.

And when I first started and had no idea what I was doing, it would have been super amazing if someone had been able to tell me what I was farking up.

It's extremely rare for people to use a mic on PS3 as well. Hell I hardly ever use mine either. Considering some of the things I've heard from randoms who have their mics on, I think it's a good thing they don't use them :D

I don't know, I expect I'd just curse a lot. And people could hear how drunk I was as opposed to guessing it by my bad playing.

It would go something like this.  "Hey bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep  get in the circle."

Side note I've been getting a lot better teamwork on bronze over silver. Silver its usually me and if I'm lucky one other person escorting the drone, while the rest pad their score. Bronze, its usually all 4 of us in the circle. Sometimes the silver style pays off even if its slow and boring as all the enemies go to them and I never see them,  but when it doesn't work it fails big.

I will say, mic for waving people off the heal circle of death might come in handy.  A hey there is a phantom right over me, don't bother until shes dead type of thing.

Bronze has the most participatory PUGs, it is true. Most of my positive PUG experiences are from there.

Mass Effect MP is one of the few games you can put in 150 hours and still be considered a newb. What I find most frustrating is when I am a Krogan and other players steal my kills.

how does one steal a kill in a co-op game?

"what I find most glorious is when I headbut a mook into submission, and a teammate walks up behind it and takes it head clean off with a claymore"

You folks complaining about PUGs are acting as if the moment you were born from your mother's womb you can already solo a platinum with an Avenger or something.

People are so quick to forget that at one point, all of us can't tell the difference between Armor Piercing Rounds and Explosive Ammo :P

And even if you can tell the difference, good luck getting the Trollstore to give you what you need (Like a damned piercing mod for your guns!). Even as an alt you can have difficulties getting/doing what you need, so a little slack should be given. However, trying to get carried on Platinum because you need the creds, or as an Avenger Human Soldier on Gold is not very cool (Admittedly my alt does use an Avenger, but they also use Singularity and Shockwave on Gold)..

That said, one of my friends (Rossini) and I tend to be on the scout for promising newish players, and then we train them up. We've already gotten one good platinum player out of it. Our current one has a long way to go, but his missiles and medigel aren't precious.

Yes, the bolded above is basically my stance. On Gold if at least one other person is equipping properly, I'd give it a go regardless of the other two. Or hell, I'd even give it a go if all of them are at least equipping something, even if they're not at high level or if some slots are empty. Platinum? I don't mind playing with low level groups, really, so long as they don't do blatantly stupid stuff like score whoring. I always use a mic anyways so if need be I can say what I have in mind regarding people playing with me, hahaha.

Anyways, pugs, some of them can be good, some of them can be bad. Just have some fun regardless of what pugs you get guys, even bad pugs can make games more enjoyable--hey, at least you need to pay more attention instead of just snoozing your way through enemies' ranks with your Black Widow X, hahaha.

It's fine. I've seen an Avenger Human Soldier score over 180k on Gold, more than once.

If the person knows what they're doing, yes. Last time I used my CS Avenger Soldier with Incendiary Ammo on Silver I think I scored 90k. I just wouldn't be comfortable doing that on Gold (Assuming I didn't get kickvoted). The average Avenger wielding PUG though wont understand detonations though.

Overall, I had a good week in PUG-World. Nothing really stupid or smack my head type of stories to report back...I played 1-2 matches a night...I will tell you that I am very picky in the lobbies I will stay / play in..so that kinda is a factor in the loss of shenanigans for this past week. Who know's what this week will bring...the beer countdown has begun..see you in about 10 hours PUG-World.
