Because she's never shown to die, and there's no choice in the Keep to have her killed; the choice for that is that she fought the Inquisitor, not that she died (there's no skeleton graphic).

Exactly. Even when you side with the mages, there's no evidence that she's dead. For a counterpart, when you side with the mages, the Keep tile for Barris sets him to dead, with skeleton graphic and unequivocal "Barris died" wording. Calpernia is just set to a neutral state of not fighting the Inquisitor.

That, and there's Patrick Weekes openly stating that they like Calpernia as a character, and that the very positive response she got from players made the chances that she'll come back pretty good, too.

All this Calpernia talk was so confusing when the game first came out because I was like...WHO THE **** IS CALPERNIA THERES NO CALPERNIA IN MY GAME WHAT IS GOING ON PLS.

I have yet to ever even play a game siding with the Templars. lol

They even designed the two quests specifically so you don't have to agree with the faction you're recruiting, and so you can punish the faction you don't like, if you need to, while still getting the full picture of the story. All you're doing by refusing to play the other side is missing out on half the game's content and lore, and patting yourself in the back for this weird kind of achievement.

You don't need to patronize me. I'm not refusing to play anything- I simply haven't played a character yet that has sided with the Templars and gotten to the Calpernia quests. That's it. No weird backstory.

Since we're going to Tevinter, I think it'd be great to see a bigoted type of character. Someone like a mage of high standing that looks down on lesser people, not out of malice, but because of the way they were raised. Someone who's good at heart and wants to do what they think is best for Tevinter, but also views the lowborn and slaves as nothing more as tools or trash. Someone like Aria Geraldine, from the kickstarter game Celestian Tales Old North, who's a prim, devout, and kind noble, yet also fiercely prejudiced against commoners and people of other faiths. I think it'd be fun and interesting to interact with such a character, especially if playing an elf or qunari, though I hope that Bioware won't go full camp with it like Viv's personality or try to make them fully tolerant by the end of the game.
