SPOILER WARNING:

As even the game has pounded into our heads many times Lyrium is BAD, if Cullen continues to take Lyium in base game this is his fate.

Cullen dies and will never appear in future DA games again.

His life after the Inquisition is a painful one full of suffering as he decends down into Lyrium Madness caused by the continue use of taking Lyrium. In such a sad state where Cullen can no longer remember who he is and is just a Lyrium Addict, Scout Harding performs a mercy kill to spare Cullen from his suffering. A action all his former friends agreed was the right choice even Leliana.

I heard about that.  You know, it seems this time around, they REALLY beat you in the head with some of your choices.  Patrick Weekes influence, possibly.  He did have a tendency to give you character to care about, then happily tear your heart out and catch your tears to dip it in when the inevitable came.  Mordin Solus any...waitaminute....Solus...Solas...both written by Weekes?  Hmmmm...

Maybe Weekes is a more brilliant writer then I gave him ever credit for especially after that ME3 ending.

Solas reminds me as a sort of destroyer God that comes after the Goddes of Love and the God of War failed to learn the populations that mutual respect is the only way to live together by respecting natures law.

Weekes had nothing to do with the ME3 ending. That was written alone by the one or two head writers with no input from the rest.

Definitely love how he's willing to rip your heart out if you make bad life choices! I've always thought Bioware has had a bad habit of making bad options completely insignificant.

Hmm I'm pretty sure I told him to take the lyrium again but my ending just has him walking off with his dog.

Kinda ironic he walks the same path as Samson till he dies.

CRYING

YOU DONT UNDERSTAND

When DA: I was announced, and I heard Cullen was romanceable, I LOST MY DANG MIND. I played a lady mage in DA: Origins the 2nd time around and loved it (Ultimate sacrifice ending). Played DA 2 with mage hawke and learned that my flipping COUSIN had died to save Ferelden.

The first thing I did with DA: Inq wasn't a debate at all for my character. Right away I made a human mage and went straight for Cullen.

Omfg lyrium is evil. These writers are evil. This is awful and fantastic.

Wow, I'm glad I'm never going to see that epilogue slide. I always tell him to break the addiction.

In my second playthrough I told him to take Lyrium until the war with Corypheus was over. Hopefully this doesn't trigger the ending slide.

Horrible, yes. He barely registered in Origins and I didn't play DA2, but I thought his friendship scenes were among the best in Inquisition. Seeing what could become of him was a kick in the guts.

Man, that's kind of harsh because you'd think all the people he worked with and became friends with during the Inquisition's time would have stepped in to help or do something before he had to be mercy knifed. I guess if he just disappeared and they found him later, that makes sense, but yikes. Poor bastard. :P

*LOL*....I see Bioware is trying to pull on the heartstrings...

Cullen shouldn't be suffering from lyrium addiction/rejection at this stage since he's way too young. We've run across multiple older templars like Gregor and the blind Templar from origins. The one Templar we saw in origins that actually was suffering from lyrium overexposure was depicted as much older in front of the chantry. (The Templar who was the borther of the Bann of the waking sea in Howe's dungeon was suffering from lyrium withdrawl...slightly different affliction).

Cullen has probably been on the juice for a little bit long than Alistair has been a grey warden and in origins, I was given the distinct impression that the after effects of lyrium dementia was about the same time frame as the warden's calling  - about 25 years.

Furthermore, this reflects VERY badly on any of the Divines since it means that unless Cullen gets off the juice, there's NO sanatorium re-established for older Templars? Even Leliana just ignores the issue - same leliana that's all about providing a shining example of how the chantry should act - yeah, kicking to the curb your most faithful servants who sacrificed their minds for you kind of contradicts this...

You should be fine. From what I know gettingit only appears if he's back on Lyrium permanently.

btw, can I just point out that showing that awesome Lion Helmet just pisses me off? He never wears that thing the entire freaking game, even though it was in the Trailer!

I recall reading somewhere, or maybe watching it in a youtube vid of one of their interviews, one of the devs saying that helmet was only used because it was covering up a glitch.  They couldn't get Cullen's mouth to close or something like that.  Stuck open like he was constantly screaming, IIRC.

Yelling at the recruits all day wore out the hinges of his jaw, obviously.

Took me a few confused moments to recognize what the odd thing in the first slider was supposed to be. I never saw the lion helm in game, and the artstyle in the sliders is a bit ... odd sometimes.

I feel as though this epilogue clearly make the decision pretty binary. There is good and bad decision. Where is the benefit to choosing the bad choice?

Well, I suppose all of the Cullen haters got what they wanted. However, it annoys me that there is no bad ending for Sera--she deserves it as much as anyone.

Poor Cullen, even if you didn't romance him he could be a good friend and Commander to see him fall so far is so sad!

Uh, addiction can happen at any stage of someones life. The older templars suffered from a life long use of lyrium. Cullen even states in the game that you can loose your memories over time(that its subtle), it happens very slowly and some don't even notice and in the end you end up like the old templars we see in Origins.  So the moment a Templar takes that lyrium they are addicts, its an extremely addictive substance thats how the chantry maintained their control over the Templars because they were one of the few reliable sources of lyrium.

Somehow I don't think the folk of Thedas knew just how badly lyrium could affect the minds of Templars, or that the faithful just went along with the idea's of Templars because its the Chantry  that taught them that mages were evil and needed to be locked away. The Chantry perfectly constructed this series of events that allows them to maintain absolute control, and where would the templars go? They afterall were the only source of reliable (Free) lyrium, and most Templars are dedicated to the chantry, believe in the chantry and as Cassandra states "chain themselves" to the chantry.

Cassandra rebuilding the seekers and Cullen breaking free of Lyrium is the best option for Templars, the templars can become Seekers if they wish and if not Cullen takes care of Templars who wish to break their addiction or have fallen to their addiction. As for Leliana yeah she's contradictory!
