Minrathous
Minrathous done great, with 2-4 large subzones filled with sidequests and areas to explore.
...
Amen! And all they need to do to achieve this is study Novigrad in Witcher 3: a real, sprawling, living city - full of sailors, merchants, priests, urchins, whores, jades, soldiers, fanatics, bandits, etc.
I liked the war table as a concept - it gave a strategic feel to the game and underlined the idea that we were at the head of a large continent-wide organization. Which is why I doubt they'll have something like that in DA4, even if you chose to preserve the Inquisition. Be that as it may, what I would have appreciated with the war table is the ability to use your assets more widely.
There's a stray baron to punish in Orlais? Send in the Bull and his Chargers, and I mean literally: once selected you are the Bull and go through a small mission on the map with your band. In other words I would like to have the ability to play one of the companions besides the main protag - just like those small interludes with Ciri in W3.
I refer to W3 a lot I know but it is such a well done game. I believe there's no shame in borrowing the best ideas out there.
Other than that less companions but better ones - meaning more development so more screen time. And here's an idea: BW can write the character - the sex, race, background and voice would be set - but we get to chose how they look like - just like with Hawke in DAI. That would go a long way into making each game unique.
Exploration is fun but it should be relevant to the progression of the main story. If you wish to allow the players to discover all those well crafted zones then make sure you pace your main quest line accordingly - no more you can complete Adamant when half the map hasn't been visited yet.
Like someone mentioned it's essential the choices we make have a direct, visible impact in the game world.
If the BW people feel compelled to develop DA4 for consoles first then at least do so intelligently so the port to PC is transparent. And please! Do away with the infantile color coded control buttons and anachronistic interface menus that look like they're coming out of Star Trek. That's precisely the kind of detestable consolitis I abhor.
More freedom in tailoring your character. Think Skyrim where you could choose whatever skill you wanted and get better if you practiced. Granted here the lore limits the permutations possible but still, it's something worth investigating.
The horse in DAI was useless - if the zones are to be more compact in DA4 I suggest dispensing with it altogether.
More options for the wardrobe. In DAI the pyjamas were used everywhere in Skyhold whereas they should have been reserved for your bedroom and the cut-scenes with you lover. I'd like a designated outfit for home, for the city, for formal occasions, for the outdoors - so whenever you go from one type of scene to another your outfit changes with it.
I quite liked the crafting in DAI - but everyone could it. There was no cost associated with it. The only limitations were the shcematics and getting Dagna to make runes. We should have a skill tree for that - just like in DAO - and have ourselves or a companion specializes in it.
Speaking of crafting - there should be shops that sell mats - like in Val-Royaux in Trespasser. Gathering is nice during the exploration phase of the1st playthrough but after that it's tedious and reeks of MMO. Oh and sliders - such simple things sliders... So we don't have to click 300 times to get enough elfroot to brew potions...
Oh and one last thing. Make it easily moddable! That is essential if you wish to insure longevity to your game. Once again think of Skyrim - 5 years down the road and its gaming community remains thriving; in fact it's powerful enough to make Steam's Boss back down when he tried to monetize mods.
