I was watching (for the billionth time) the best trailer ever made for an RPG, meaning Dragon Age Origins Sacred Ashes trailer and I realized something, Bioware wasn't able to create such an epic trailer for DAI but DAI combat system (which I hated) mimics that trailer like alot! Even hating the system I'm bound to think they were successful in achieving something that back in 2009 they could only dream of. I guess they must be very happy *_*

Since Trespasser made me love the franchise once again I have to come to terms with the new direction in combat and watching the DAO Sacred Ashes trailer (and some of Inquisition trailers too) is helping me a lot to try and think of it as something good.

I made the thread because, well, I know a lot of people disliked the combat in DAI and perhaps we could use this fantasy to help us enjoy it. (Not easy since, for instance, with the new cromatic 2h sword I kill most enemies with Combat Roll [new ugrade] in matter of seconds, and my party is dealing so much damage/effects enemies just explode) Roleplaying combat yay! (Let's see how far I can go with it xD )

I didn't dislike Inquisition combat per se. I disliked the combat limitations it has compared to Origin and DA 2 (i.e. tactic list, and 8 skill restriction) As a console user mostly, I really like how they brought the over head tactical camera to consoles. I personally hope that's a keeper. Overall I enjoyed the fast pace, but I think they could tone down the flash a little bit and maybe even take notes from DD.

In fact console players can't really be blamed for liking DAI since for them it was a road of improvement in some areas. I'd say overall it was an improvement when I see DAO -> DA2 -> DAI in consoles. Biggest problem is for PC users (like myself) and people who started in early games like DAO, NWN or even BG. But the point was that if we try hard enough perhaps we (who hated the combat system) could think of it as the Sacred Ashes trailer =P

It is more like a Support Center for people who miss DAO but still love the franchise xD

I played DAO and DAII on the Xbox (with a controller), played DAI on a PC. Tried KB and mouse briefly for DAI and then switched to a Xbox controller on PC. Using qweasd for directional controls didn't feel right to me and I preferred the feel of an analogue stick on a controller.  I have to say I definitely prefer the DA 2 approach which seemed to be perfect for single-player controller use, with a full array of commands and actions you could generate almost in real time and without breaking immersion. I dislike the overhead camera in DAI. it feels like a cheat mode to me, and having to switch back and forth from 3rd person to overhead in order to make positional and other micro tactical (?) commands breaks up the rythmn of the game and the sense of immersion. The only time the pause action feels good to me is when the game pauses when you use an area of effect spell or attack while staying in 3rd person.

It's not that bad but I would like Bioware to relook at the various compromises they had to make to accomodate real-time multiplayer and the differences between controller and KB and mouse players.

Well, DAI is so much easier than previous games in series that I don't even need to pause, but I understand your complaint. In the first hours of game it felt like hell to switch to tactial camera, so I just completely excluded it from my gameplay style later. (Specially after you're well aware of weaknesses and resistances of enemies)

No trailer is ever going to help me like DA:I's boring, tedious combat.

Origin's combat was dull for any class that wasn't a caster mage. It was auto attack heavy and the threat system was frankly awful. It was ridiculously heal spammy and a lot of the abilities in the game were underwhelming both in appearance and functionality. Archery was functionally unusable without the RtO dlc, and didn't work with the best team buff in the game, haste. There was also little interplay between classes.

Inquisition's combat is far from perfect, but it's much better than origin's which was a mess.

I prefer Inquisition's combat over Origins' as well, but coming at this conversation as a PS3/PS4 player, I'm well aware I'm never going to have the full grasp of what people loved about DAO's setup.

I think there was fewer opponents at one time than DA2 while in DAO you activated a big group of opponents too.  The leaping demon thing on the fade rifts was sort of annoying to me.  There was wide open spaces and then a couple/three mage or templers if I'm remembering correctly.

The Lesser/Greater Terrors (leaping demons) can be pretty obnoxious. Aeryn Lavellan is an archer, so I try to time a Leaping Shot to escape them. It... doesn't always work.

Wat? Dragon Age: Origin had some of the best combat gameplay ever seen in an RPG. Only the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale come close.

There are no great spells in DA:I, no tactics to speak of, no positioning...it's just a chore.

EDIT: Archers did suck though, they've sucked in every Bioware RPG except Baldur's Gate (the original only, nerfed in BG2) and Inquisition.

I just play inquisition in a way that requires tactics. The absence of a tactical menu does not preclude actual tactics in gameplay.

There are also much more conditional requirements to abilities in Inquisition. Beyond even combos, some abilites are more effective at higher health, some create defensive barriers that even block ranged attacks, some prevent movement. These are all tactical tools that Origins lacked.

Origins combat was just about stacking gear and passive buffs until you became unstoppable. It wasn't even a combat system, it was an arms race. There was no thought to warrior/rogue abilties. No "bonus damage on knockdown," no "better damage lower health %" There were no situations in where it wasn't optimal to immediately throw out your abilites. That's not tactical.

The only class that required thought was the caster mage, but it essentially boiled down to "How can I aim the cone of cold/fireball so I don't obliterate my team."

None of it was even remotely tactical. Compared to the cross class combos of inquisition, the ability conditions and the added control tools to every class, (not just mages) Origin's combat system looks like a frail infant.

Oh yeah, and the fact that you could just spam health poultices every fight in Origins.

It was a mess. You may like it, but it was a mess.

Agreed here. I'm not a fan of having warriors and rogues have flashy power skills when using ordinary swords and daggers.
