I do not want any returning characters to fill companion slots. If they need to return for plot purposes, have them be major NPC's.
Agreed. I hate returning characters as companions (looking at you Varric). Though it would depend on the protagonist/setting in DA4. If it continues with the Inquisitor, then there could be some reasonable arguments for returning characters (mostly to handle any love interest issues). If it is Tevinter or Qunari based, seeing Dorian, Bull, Feynriel, Sten (As Arishok) or Fenris could be cool for side quest or even main story purposes. All in all though, I would rather see a new protagonist, and all new companions to love and hate.
Generally I prefer to both meet up with returning characters as companions, and meeting new ones. Teaming up with good 'ol Minsc and Boo in BG2 was great fun ![]()
Mabari Companion.
Charade for purposes of an Amell to possibly be in all DA games, a Red Jenny, and snark
Abelas for the huge potential for character growth
Yavanna just because from what little I've heard about the comics have me extremely intrigued
Lace Harding and this time as a romance option; my male dwarf inquisitor was really disappointed
Fenris because need someone to clash heads with about mages and DA2 tie in
As for new characters
A female straight dalish for if I play a traditional straight male dalish I want to be able to have a dalish romance
A qunari to argue with maybe even start a mini war
A dwarf from Kal-Sharok because I need to know what it's like there this one is very important to me I mean we've been to Orzamar we've been to the deep roads we've even been inside a Titan but we've yet to see more than the faintest trace of Kal-Sharok
A grey warden just because wardens and not a cop out like Blackwall I don't mean any disrespect to Blackwall his plot was epic but it was a cop out on the warden front
That would satisfy all my demands in a group of characters in the DA universe.
Please bring Bodahn and Sandal back!
Want more nonhumans and mages, nonandrastians companions / advisors love interest for non-humans and mages heroes(cos humans male and female heroes of human and non-human races will have them anyway) characters because it's not funny and slap in the face to have 2 andrastians nonmages human females who lelianna friends again
give nonhumans and mages males heroes, someone like
1)Straight Elven mage female (elven laetan magister or dalish / Elf ancient one), who is not andrastian and have a realistic pragmatic viev on magic and blood magic, and who will not romance humans because it makes no sense.. .personaly i want to see the "hybrid" of the Morrigan, Vellana and Merriil
2)Straight Dwarven female(Dagna or Valta (now I personally think of Valta more that Dagna) .. but I'm sure that we have Harding as our spy / advisor)
3)Bi or straight Kossith female Tal vashot (real one, not a secret qun spy., who hates and fight against Qun) sareabas
and some 1 bi noble human female who would not be as Cassandra and especially like Josephine, Isabella and Lelianna...maybe someone like Aveline, Vivienne, Bethani
want to have a real Tevinter companion, mage-magister blood mage......not a Tevinter exiles and other fake crap like Fenris(as Tevinter warrior) or especially Dorian was and as Maevaris Tilani would be with their stupid "lucerni" opposition, i would rather get Danarius(want to see him in DA4 with new results of experiments with lyrium tattoo as with magister Varania ) or Alexius. Caladrius, Devera like ones
want to have rune golem back(do not want any mabari crap, i would rather have a lion or Tevinter battle scorpion or wywern or dragon or desire deamon as "Kitty" if they want to give me some pet)
2)Straight Dwarven female(Dagna or Valta (now I personally think of Valta more that Dagna) .. but I'm sure that we have Harding as our spy / advisor)
Dagna isn't straight. Depending on circumstances, she can end up in a relationship with Sera.
I agree there should be more non-Andrastian female characters in the main cast, though. After three games we've only had Morrigan, Merrill and maybe Isabela. (Wynne isn't actually religious, but I think everyone would agree that she's culturally Andrastian, and she disapproves of tainting the Ashes enough to attack you over it.)
Abelas. Just Abelas.
and a super serious dwarf. they aren't all funny drunks, i know, my dwarf warden was a ******.
I think some of you have unrealistic expectations. I do like this one though. It would be nice to have a dwarf companion who has some dwarven pride. I'm a bit torn though. On the one hand, that will typically mean a dwarf from the higher caste levels which comes in with some baked-in prejudices. While I don't mind those, we already had some elements of that with Dorian as the Tevinter altus (and I say this as someone who adores the man). On the other hand, a dwarf from the lower castes, casteless, or Legion of the Dead doesn't have much reason for dwarven pride since they will have been s*** on their whole life.
Considering the above, I would like an older Legion of the Dead member, like Kardol. I like the jaded personality types, particularly if the PC can get them to open up a bit after time and bleed away some of the cynicism.
LI or not, makes no difference to me with such a character at this point as I would have to get to know them before deciding on a romance (or not). Another option would be for them to have a sort of mentor role like Wynne in DAO.
I do admit that I'm envisioning a male dwarf for this, but a female would work just as well.
All of that aside, I just don't want another Varric-type surface dwarf who has no stone sense. I liked Sigrun, but I viewed her as sort of a little sister, which is why I want an older, experienced person.
Warriors: Amund, Fenris, The Iron Bull, Belinda, Cullen
Rogues: Leliana, Cole, Sebastian, Isabela, Varric
Mages: Dorian, Maevaris, Morrigan, ZITHER!, Merrill
Yes! Yes! A big party! ![]()
What about Alistair, i know hes king but what about if hes getting old, cant sit by and let whatever threat to his lands carry on and wants one last adventure before he knows he will die from old age or maybe even going to the deep roads for the calling.
unless the hero of the first game shows up to give him a cure, which we know he is looking for and everyone wants a cameo from him.
also Alistair could be trying to hide his face because he has the most well known face in the land from being king, and people could mention it to him all time like, 'are you the king' and he could say 'no i get that alot' blah blah blah, he could make jokes about having you killed, and theres your comedy relief character right there.
bioware im ready for a job when you are.
I'm always surprised to see people champion Charade. She was such a throw-away character for me, but I guess different strokes for different strokes. She's fine and all, but I feel like she's retread territory at this point. The only interesting thing about her outside of being Hawke's cousin was her Red Jenny affiliation and we just got Sera to fill that role in the larger narrative.
For me, I'd like to see both Maevaris and Harding as companions in the next game. I also really, really don't want any returning companions.
Also, I wouldn't mind seeing a return of some of the DAMP characters as full companions. In particular, I'd be interested in Korbin, Cillian, Belinda, Hissera, Luka, Pala, Sidony, Amund, or Zither. That might be an interesting way to introduce new characters -- first as DAMP characters, later as full companions.
I genuinely don't see any of Inquisition's companions returning to be companions in DA4 - the closest I think we'll get would be Dorian as a faction leader of some kind, assuming we're going to Tevinter and encountering the Magisterium, but I don't think that would be anything more than a role that, at most, would be on par with Morrigan, and probably more in line with Alistair from DA2.

I could not agree more. Dorian and Maevaris, both these men oppose the Tevinter Imperium's truest ideals and should not be main representatives of it as companions in the future game. Especially if it is set in Imperium. Down with Lucerni.
Feynriel... or maybe Dog... Shale would be good... or Nathaniel Howe... Emile DeLauncet would make for interesting party banter... then there is Maraas... Gatt... even Lia and Bianca come to mind...
Hmmm... so many possibilities...
Okay... definitely Feynriel. Yep. I want that little dreamer on my side.

The problem is Alistair can be dead multiple times. The first time is by delivering the killing blow to Urthemial, killing himself in the process if the Dark Ritual wasn't performed. The second time is by serving as a distraction against The Nightmare to buy Hawke and Inquisitor enough time to escape the Fade.

I know this to be true, but he has never died in my main game.
They will never make a new dragon age better then Origins
Another Templar Grey Warden or even a spirit or rhys I don't care who the new companions are but I want them to bring back cole cause they didn't do to well with that character I can't really explain it but the writing was terrible
No returning characters, all new and some personalities that will really clash with each other causing actual confrontations ala Baldur's Gate 2 style (e.g. Minsc and Edwin). Less archetypes that have been used before, where going to a new land after all so why not explore what hasn't been done already e.g. Tal-Vashoth Qunari, female dwarves, etc
Some character examples with hopefully a sense of variety (1 for each race with a 5th thrown in for the role of archer)
- Dwarf, female, 1H&S warrior. Fiery, loud and proud dwarven mercenary. Pursues adventure with reckless abandon in search of glory everlasting. Joins the party for the thrill of the adventure.
- Human, male, 2H warrior. An unapologetically arrogant human noble with an ego the size of his hammer and the skills to back up his talk. Self affected air of superiority and condescending attitude makes him hard to work with. Joins the party to serve his own ambitions.
- Elf, male, 2D rogue. Stoic Dalish elf who suffers from bizarre visions and unusually vivid dreams. Believes the Gods are talking to him and telling him to seek out the protagonist for an as-of-yet undisclosed reason. Joins the party to aid the protagonist believing it to be the will of the Gods
- Qunari, female, mage. A young quick tempered Tal-Vashoth with immense power and little restraint. Snarky and abrasive, aggressive towards anyone who would have her supress her natural raw powers. Joins the group for protection against the Ben-Hassrath and anti-Qun sentiments.
- Human, archer. Gender dependent on protagonist, will be opposite gender of character choice e.g. male protag, female character. A secretive rogue who seems to know about the story than lets on. Laid back with a very casual let-it-be outlook on life, prefers to avoid conflict but one shirk in the face of it. Gets wrapped up in the plot with the protag and wants to see it through to the end

New characters
Rogue: female human qunari. Agent/spy. Blonde hair, brown eyes. Cunning. DW.
Mage: female dalish elf. Priestess of the Elven Gods. Long white hair and light blue eyes. Blue vallaslin. Ageless. Necromancer.
Warrior: dwarf from Tevinter. Member of the Ambassadoria. Fat. Dark hair & beard. Small grey eyes. Suspicious. Weapon and shield.
Returning characters
Rogue: Briala. She's one of my favorite characters in DA. I know she could be ruling Orlais, but after the Inquisition is disbanded it's not very likely she'll be able to hold her power anyway. It was only thanks to the elven Inquisitors influence that she was able to control Gaspard. She's also lost the power to control the Eluvians. If she wants to protect her people she will help the Inquisition stop Solas.
Mage: Calpernia. It's true she was once an ally of Corypheus and she should not get away with it just like that. Her crimes against the people of Thedas cannot go unpunished. I think she could still have potential as companion, so maybe she could become servant of the Inquisition and pledge her life to our cause. Once the Dread Wolf is defeated her debt is paid.
Warrior: Sten. One of my favorite characters from DAO. I didn't like to see how easily Alistair defeated him in Those Who Speak. So this is his chance to redeem himself. Not likely going to happen though if the Qunari are the enemy in DA4. Then I want Abelas instead. He'll hopefully help us defeat Solas because he killed Flemythal and stole her power.
Just gonna give my thoughts on some characters I'd like to return
Alistair - He should be able to join at least if he stays as warden, which btw is best suited for him. He's my favorite and yes, swooping is still bad. A true icon of the DA series.
Varric - He's a good staple in the series, love his stories. I think Varric isn't suited for viscount and would give up on it eventually to get back to his adventures.
Morrigan - My favorite mage, a real mysterious character. Gotta know what happened to that kid too.
Cassandra - She's like the beacon of everything that is good and right. Gotta love that temper, she's adorable.
Oghren - A drunk, dirty badass! Legend.
