Are there other ROLEPLAYING games (NOT Bioware) where you can have romances like this? I know that Bethesda don't really have (Elder Scrolls).

Another one is Two Worlds 2. You can have a romance arc with a NPC that culminate in a sex scene (not like recent DA/TW scenes though, because it fades to black) and there's a bit of sexual tension with another important NPC, Dar Pha, which is a female half-orc. I suppose that the romance with her was saved for the following game that, sadly, never came out.

Both are female and you can play only with a male character for story reasons (I think there is a mod that allow you to change the gender of your character but I don't know if it fixes also the dialogues which refer you as a male)

Baldur's Gate did not have romances, though Baldur's Gate 2 did. Mods have since made some character in BG1 romanceable and expanded the list of romanceable characters in BG2

And the Baldur's Gate Enhanced Eddition has new characters which Charname can "pre-romance" (they reappear in BG2 and can be fully romanced there.)

Neverwinter Nights did not have romances until it's second expansion, Hordes of the Underdark

You can romance the elf druid or evil ranger? In BG1. M/F respectively.

Edit: never mind. I was thinking about nwn2

Arcanum is another one for the 'there's a romance but only if you're playing a straight dude' pile. You can romance Raven, if you're a male human, elf or half-elf with a high enough appearance stat and good alignment.

Edit: How about the Persona games? I haven't played them, but they are JRPGs that offer a choice of romances I think. Not sure of the quality of them or anything.

Persona 3 Portable is the only one that lets you play as a woman. But yes, you have several romance options in 3 and 4.

As for quality they are all right, though each game makes some confusing design decisions. In Persona 3, for example, it's impossible to finish the female characters' dialogue scenes unless you romance them, and in Persona 4 you can romance as many girls as you want.

Couldn't you also do it as a half-ogre? I seem to recall that being the case.

Not according to anything I've read. I've never actually done the romance, just going by what I've seen in online guides.

I think it was possible. Maybe it required being a Persuasion Master? That's how you could get around companion alignment restrictions.

I *believe* there are romances in the Fables series, too, but I'm not entirely sure. The same goes for the Final Fantasy games. I think they have romance but since I haven't played them I'm not sure. However, I've read somewhere that especially Final Fantasy VII has a good romance.

There is a kind of romance in the Fable games but it doesn't really consist of more than "this NPC has fallen in love with you" and a little wedding ceremony cutscene if you decide to marry them and they will stay in one of your houses afterwards. Interestingly, you can marry multiple NPCs if you want (though they'll be upset if they find out) and gay relationships are possible.

As for the Final Fantasy games, there are romances in those but since all of those have fixed characters and fixed stories it's really just part of the story and not something you can choose to engage in.

I've done the romance (it's really not much of one) and I believe you must be human, half-elf, or elf.

Edit:  It's entirely possible there's a mod out there that allows for other races, though

Torment: Tides of Numenera is coming soon and is supposedly based off Planscape: Torment so it should be similar to DA although I don't know about romances.

I've read that there will be possibility for "mild" romances akin to the romances in the original Planscape:Torment, but nothing more than that.

The earliest Bioware title that I played was the original Neverwinter Nights, and that had romance options. I fondly remember Nathyrra and Aribeth. Pretty sure that BG2 had them as well, but not BG1, but I never played those games (yeah, I know, I'm missing out).

The Divinity: Original Sin 2 Kickstarter currently has romances - and other types of deeper companion relationships - as a stretch goal. Since they are also adding playable dwarves (dwaaaaaarves!!!) I'm thinking of backing it even though I haven't finished the first one yet.

I've backed it, but when I saw some of the new stretch goals I thought of upping my intial backing.

Still a week and a bit to go so I'll wait and see.

Some of the other playable races they're adding look very cool though.

The encanced of edition of Divinity:OS is due in October as well, so could be worth waiting for that to get back into D:OS.

I'm also excited by lizard people. Hopefully this will turn out to be a game I want to play more than once. (Definitely starting with dwarf, though. Even if I weren't already biased, 'economic refugee from crumbling empire that nobody is happy to see' sounds like an original and intriguing take on a dwarf origin.)

*facepalm*

I started playing again yesterday. Didn't realise the Enhanced Edition was coming out so soon. However, since I currently have no other fantasy RPGs I haven't played before in my backlog, I think I'll keep going for now. (Playing Trespasser and Pillars of Eternity: The White March has awakened my thirst rather than slaked it, especially since I left my PoE character sitting in his castle waiting for the second half of the expansion instead of finishing the game.)

Yes, due to the nature of the Last Castoff, (and Castoffs in general) long-term physical relationships aren't really appropriate

You can get married though.

What? Really? To whom? I clocked about 130 hrs into Kingdoms of Amalur (just the vanilla, no DLC) and that never came up even remotely. The closest I got was when Alyn threatened to kill me if I did not keep quiet towards the end and I said "but I thought you liked me!", she said something along the lines of "love has nothing to do with it". And then she disappeared. I certainly hope that Agarth is not the marriage option, because...ugh.

The Witcher has romances. Not so much in the first game but they worked on them during the course of the games and improved them. Actually, I think they did a pretty good job.

I *believe* there are romances in the Fables series, too, but I'm not entirely sure. The same goes for the Final Fantasy games. I think they have romance but since I haven't played them I'm not sure. However, I've read somewhere that especially Final Fantasy VII has a good romance.

When it comes to romances in RPGs, BioWare is somehow in the leading position. It surprises me that other developers of RPGs haven't explored the romances path further. A lot of players seem to like them and quite a few video games that aren't RPGs integrated romances in their stories (my personal favorite is the one between Max Payne and Mona Sax in Max Payne 2  :) ). So, I wonder romances aren't more common in RPGs.

Apparently, Fallout 4 is going to have romances, or at least as much has been hinted during a presser not too far back. Interested to see how it plays out.

To Sunhilda Lorelle in the Dead Kel DLC. She has a pretty funny line after you get married:

Neverwinter Nights does have a romance option for female PCs - Aarin Gend. It's not a big romance arc or anything, but it is kind of sweet.

You can romance Aribeth too, though it won't end well. And with high wisdom you can romance that elven cleric, don't remember her name.

As for quality they are all right, though each game makes some confusing design decisions. In Persona 3, for example, it's impossible to finish the female characters' dialogue scenes unless you romance them, and in Persona 4 you can romance as many girls as you want.

You can romance everyone in Persona 3, it's just more difficult, since they gradually lose affection when you do it with more than one character.

:D that is hilarious; I love it. Thank you so much for clearing that up. It also explains why I never came across it - I never got any of the DLCs, even though I thought the game itself was fantastic and I really wanted to after I finished it. But considering what happened - such a shame - it was better not to get invested any further. I mean, even the vanilla all by itself was good enough to make me sad that no more will happen on that front.

I also noticed that the wiki suggests you can also romance the Maid of Windemere. Ok, I do remember that being hinted at, I just never considered it an option because creepy immortal stalker girlfriend is creepy.

The DLCs were actually quite good, and Legend of Dead Kel was especially fantastic! Sad that Kurt couldn't handle his financial way out of a wet paper bag.

Yes, the Maid can also be romanced. If you spare her, you two rule the House of Ballads together. The other HoB members will hate your guts, though.

I just never considered it an option because creepy immortal stalker girlfriend is creepy.

It is not her fault that she was forced to play a villain.

Personally I despise King Wencen more. The second he realizes that his victory is no longer guaranteed/fated, he freaks out and says: "you go deal with the Maid, I gotta skedaddle". It is easy to be a hero when you are scripted to win. :D
