I waited months after release to play, not starting the game until after the most recent patch, hoping this would have allowed time for any kinks in the Keep to be worked out. Everything seemed fine early on - Leliana mentioned romancing the Warden, and then him dying at Denerim. Loghain made an appearance as a Grey Warden. Imagine my surprise when Morrigan claimed to have spent time with her lover beyond the Eluvian - despite the Warden being dead (amd her being stabbed!) in my world state. Has anyone else encountered this? Does this mean other choices (like refusing the Dark Ritual) will be ruined as well?

I had two playthroughs with and w/out dark ritual and HoF being dead/alive. In the first one (with dead Hof) it was all fine, but in the second one, i received a letter from male HoF despite the fact the game recognises her as woman

So, should I just give up on this game ever being functional? Choice and consequence is billed as a major feature, but the developers apparently can't be bothered to make the world state imports work.

There's your problem. It's a known import bug. Stabbing Morrigan makes her think that she and the Warden were together, male or female Warden.

Interesting - I appreciate the info. Still, one would think 9 months after release would have been ample time to include fix in one of the patches.

I think it's a random bug, which are pretty hard to fix in general. On my first playthrough my Warden was an female elf mage who didn't stab Morrigan and  she never mentioned anything about a romanced Warden in DAI. Until a month ago when I replayed my mage and she said how very much in love they are.

Well stabbing Morrigan could mean you romanced her.
