I'm warning you, its long its the reason I put it in the spoiler tags. All codex links go to the Dragon Age Wiki.
Because of Trespasser we now know that the ancient elves and dwarves did not get along as the titans would cause earthquakes so the elves asked their gods to bring down the titans. [1] [2] I also assume from Trepasser and the parts of the deep roads we visited that the elves stole certain parts of the deep roads for themselves so that they could mine Lyrium and this is why we visited these places and why they were all seemingly dedicated to mythal.
What I'm starting to wonder (its all pure speculation) but did the elves create the blights through accident rather then intention.
Starting with Andruil who as we all know entered the void and slowly went insane [3], building her armour out of materials from the void and as she entered the world / Thedas she brought with her some sort of plague. Assuming that the veil had yet to be created this means the void had to be somewhere she could go, could the void be a titan?
Sounds silly I know, but take the last couple of lines on that first codex:
"What the Evanuris in their greed could unleash would end us all. Let this place be forgotten. Let no one wake its anger. The People must rise before their false gods destroy them all."
From the way the codex is written I'm assuming its talking about the the titans roaming the land, not underground but actually walking upon it, their sheer size would have caused immense earthquakes so the elven gods struck down the titans using their dragon forms and buried them underground, creating the roads beneath the deep roads.
The dwarves would later build thaigs outside / above the titans as they became more independent and slowly moved away from the titan and disconnected from it. Over the years they built the deep roads that we know today connecting each thaig and titan, but slowly they stopped going to the titans. Maybe they preferred their freedom, over having a hive mind or being connected to the mind of the Titan.
But, (here is where I put on my tin foil hat) one of the titans got sick, maybe it's own rage, maybe infection through magic or demon but either way the titan got sick and when it was discovered what was happening to titan the elves panicked and buried it deep, or just collapsed all routes to that titan. The ancient dwarves never went back to that titan and everyone thought out of sight out of mind was the best way to deal with it, or perhaps they couldn't because they were no longer connected to that particular titan.
Why I think this is because of Solas, he unlike Varric did not seem surprised when he saw the red lyrium at the temple of scared ashes and he was quick to answer with "magic could have drawn upon lyrium from beneath the temple and corrupted it" meaning he'd seen magic corrupt lyrium before and what did cory use, the Solas' orb. Whatever magic is contained within those orbs could have the power to corrupt lyrium, turning it red, making a titan sick and so creating blight.
Then we turn to the archdemons, who I still believe are the Evanuris or at least a piece of them. Each Evanuris is capable of turning into a dragon (confirmed by the second codex maybe?) because now we know Mythal was murdered by the other gods that gives us (not including solas) seven Evanuris who could relate to the Seven old god dragons.
-
Dumat, the Dragon of Silence - Elgar'nan
-
Zazikel, the Dragon of Chaos - Andruil
-
Toth, the Dragon of Fire - Sylaise
-
Andoral, the Dragon of Slaves - June
-
Urthemiel, the Dragon of Beauty - Ghilan'nain
-
Razikale, the Dragon of Mystery - Dirthamen
-
Lusacan, the Dragon of Night - Falon'Din
Also Razikale and Lusacan have yet to appear. They could appear together, as the brothers (dirth / falon) were said to be close to one another and we know an archdemon has possibly been dug up [5] while a blight is said to be starting in the Anderfels [6]. If this is how the sixth blight starts, it possible Razikale will join his brother and that is how you could get a blight led by two archdemons.
It's also possible that their could be an eighth old god, Draconis which was shown to be serpentine and who could turn into a serpent? [4] Mythal! (adjusts tin foil hat) but I'm starting to wonder if like Flemeth the archdemons are pieces of the Evanuris, trapped within dragon form. Either Mythal's piece was Draconis, freed somehow or she was never trapped within that form.
When the veil was created did Solas somehow split the Evanuris' power (accidentally) and that is why Dumat ordered cory and friends to cross the veil into the fade, not because the old gods wanted Cory to gain power but because Dumat wanted Cory and friends to destroy the veil. Destroying the veil would unite the dragon and Evanuris parts, make them whole once more.
Who then sealed the old god dragons away?
I assume it was some type of spell to safe guard the fade, When Cory entered the golden city the spell protecting the veil and fade would instantly cast out anyone who dared enter. I can't imagine someone as smart as Solas didn't include a few safety measures when creating the veil.
But then why was the Golden city black, Why was the taint already there if its just red lyrium?
1. Above i said the golden city could be a temple, I assume believe it could be the city of Arlathan. If it is Arlathan then I assume over time magic has become corrupt in the fade, demons have begun to form and whatever the golden city was made from became corrupt from demons and magic.
2. Pieces of Andruil's armour, or red lyrium could have remained, perhaps they had been studying it like Dagna and the Inquisition but of course when the gods were put to sleep and the fade created no one could lock away the red lyrium so it was allowed to grow and infect.
3. Something else could be stalking the grounds of the city protecting it. A creation of Solas or someone else. (as dalish elf warden origin-Tamlen see's something in eluvian, an underground city and something moving)
But if red lyrium came first how did we get the blights and taint we know today?
The red lyrium or corrupted magic turned the city black and when Cory and friends entered the golden/black city, they were infected just as Andruil was infected and when they were cast out of the fade they brought a new form of corruption with them. The taint that we know today.
Darkspawn don't know the red lyrium because that's not where they got their taint, they got it from Cory and friends who returned to Thedas, infected the Old god dragons and began the blights.
But Titans don't have blight!
1. We only saw one Titan that had woken because of the breach, the reappearance of a huge amount of magic. Or perhaps it just nervous because there was that dammed orb again, mythals orb, one of the orbs that first buried them deep underground.
2. The Darkspawn don't go that far underground to the titans because the Titans song confuses them, Darkspawn are driven by a song, without a song they go mad (the mother from awakenings) but if they start to hear a new song they get confused, the titan can't control them but perhaps it can make Darkspawn turn the other way. Kinda like saying "No archdemon here, turn left at the next exit"
3. Titans have magical (or something similar) dwarves protecting them [7], and I assume some wraiths (or something similar)
But why would the old gods call to darkspawn?
The darkspawn seek out the old gods because the old gods sing to them, they go underground to free the old god dragons. The old god dragons if they are pieces of the Evanuris wishing to be whole again are doing the exact same thing as they did to cory, but instead of a simple minded human its now a Darkspawn.
1. The archdemons don't know the things they are singing to are Darkspawn.
2. They are already archdemons.
Solas made me stop and wonder, are the grey wardens right? The grey wardens tell us a blight begins when the darkspawn corrupt an old god. But what if they are already archdemons, singing the song to Darkspawn so they can be freed from their prison.
They no longer remember they are part of the Evanuris and simply wish to be free, that freedom unfortunately means they spread blight and the Darkspawn follow, or they really do want to destroy everything. Or perhaps they do remember and the dragon part is a more basic instinct a rage, seeking out the dread wolf for revenge and destroying everything in their path to do so? Or they no longer care about the world they have awakened in, they just want their revenge and so will burn all of Thedas to find the wolf.
Thedas is or was the land of the Evanuris, this is their land they can't have all these humans on their land! The Darkspawn are slaves to the Archdemons just as the elven people were slaves to the Evanuris perhaps because they are pieces of the same whole the Archdemons can't see that the darkspawn are not the elven people. They all sing the same song (speak the same language) so the archdemons might think they are actually the Evanuris and the Darkspawn are their elven slaves.
Remember how I said above that the Titans and dwarves once may have had a hive mind? I wonder if the corruption of the blight that comes from red lyrium mimics or is this same connection just diffrent body! So it connects the archdemons to the darkspawn just like how the titans were once connected to the dwarves.
So I tend to believe that the blights began because Evanuris defeated the Titans that once walked the land and buried them and the corruption of a singular titan produced red lyrium, and the Titan became a literal void the the world which was then both Fade and real. Like someone had just erased the fade and reality from that part of... well reality it was a literal void. Everything that the blight and Taint would come to be is infact because of that one (or more) titan which either died or was corrupted.
TL;DR
The archdemons are pieces of the Evanuris corrupted by the taint that Cory brought from the fade, that corruption was either:
red lyrium from the void that had infected the golden / black city. The void was once a titan, that had either died or become corrupted through magical means like being buried by Mythal using her magical orb of destruction just as the lyrium beneath the temple of scared ashes had become corrupted thanks to the combine magic of cory and the orb.
Or
Magic that had festered within the golden city, as i believe the city would have contain massive amounts of lyrium.
They rampage across thedas as archdemons hunting down Solas, because this (thedas) is their land they wish to get rid of all intruders (non elves) and will destroy everything in their path.
At least that's my tin foil hat theory, There are probably so many things wrong with this silly theory.
