I had another thread make me think of this and I'm curious what the rest of you think.

At the end, you can swear to try to save Solas, from himself, or, hunt him down and off him. You're looking for people he doesn't know, so that he doesn't anticipate your movement. I look at it as something like a chess match.

Which leads me to my question.

Where would you start?

If (hypothetically) your inquisitor makes the first move, where would you even start trying to stop/find him? Would you send out spies? Do research? Amass another army?

The first thing I would do is find Morrigan. She may know enough of Flemythal to give at least general advice and knowledge. And I know she knows things she's never mentioned to anyone. And then I'd be doing a **** ton of research. I don't even know how you research the Fade without Solas but I'd give it the good old college try.

I think it depends on the character. I know if I were in Thedas, I'd sit around twiddling my thumbs until Solas prolapsed... everybody. >_____>

But I think my Cadash would try to hunt down Valta and see what information there is about how the dwarves used to be, the nature of the Titans, etc. in order to gain a greater understanding of the world that Solas is trying to recreate. My Adaar is more militarily minded, and also a mage - I think she'd be more focused on gaining allies and fighting Solas on his own (aka magical) terms, looking toward Tevinter and Morrigan.

I'd probable start by making the world worth saving. Protecting Divine Leliana, enforce her reforms, and either talking down or putting down rebellions who want her gone.

I think my Lavellan would busy herself with spies and research- trying to understand how such a thing could work and how it could be prevented. If it could not be prevented, how she could save the people when it inevitably happened.

I think she'd try to find a better way, another option.

Magical research. Solas's biggest weapon that we know of is his stone eyes and that needs to be countered and no matter what, we will fail.

You need to build a network , you already know Solas is gathering elves...and he will probably look for magical artifact.

There were other foci , Dorian talks about it , some ancient Tevinter mages might have found some.

With the Red Jenny , you can get information about elven servants moving around.

Dorian in Tevinter can gives you a bit of information too, but you'd need spies over Tevinter ; to check if elven slaves are disappearing and if someone break into some old Tevinter archives.

Might also want to be pro active and search for foci before Solas makes a move.

Then you'd need Morrigan , Briala and maybe Merrill to study Eluvians , being able to cut part of the Crossroads from Solas would be good.

Also if you're Dalish , spread the words to Dalish clans the Dread Wolf and his curse of misfortune is back...so they stay away from him.

And you'd need elven spies to follow Fen Harel too.It sucks , they might get killed ...but no other choice.

Also well might want to trap Abelas and co , I doubt they would cooperate but ...well whatever informations they have , you need it.

That's a good idea about having Morrigan and Merrill/Briala to study the Eluvians. Cutting off his access as much as possible would be useful, though I'm still not clear on exactly how powerful Solas is. I know he can turn to stone and that looks pretty damn powerful but...

My Inquisitor disbanded the Inquisition so has very limited resources to pull from. I assume they will work in the shadows much like Leliana did, building alliances bringing order to the chaos and hopefully uniting all of Thedas against Solas. Connections and alliances are the best way to go forth, Solas is waiting for the Inquisitor to return and make her move so she will have to use other's to fight for her.

I suspect this is how Hero number four is brought into the game, to become an agent of the Inquisitor and investigate Solas on the sly.

He might be less powerful out of the Crossroads.

You'd need something to cut his power from the fade , so something to do with lyrium , I imagine.

His main power right now is really the Crossroads...he only got Flemythal's power so he's still not ubber powerful in normal Thedas.

I'd be getting the word out to every nation in Thedas. Then I'd spend the next 50 years convincing them it was actually going to happen by which time Solas would have won and we'd all be dead. Meh maybe it's not worth saving.

I think with my Lavellan I'd start with collecting, researching, and perhaps duplicating the elven artifacts we switched on all over thedas. Assuming Solas was truthful about what they did, their strengthening of the Veil could be a huge help in at least delaying his plan.

I would first go to Leliana and ask her if she were in Solas' shoes, what would she do? Leliana and Solas are very similar in the way they think. Then I would take the information that Leliana gave me and show it to Sera and ask, how would you stop him? Solas found Sera to be completely unpredictable, he was never able to figure her out, which makes her the only person who might have a chance at stopping him.

Solas has several things going for him: knowledge, power and a head start - he knows how to destroy the Veil, he has or soon will have the means to do it, and he's already had years to put his plan into motion. So, basically, anything that is attempted, has to be done quickly. You need to find out as much as you can about him and his plans, make allies, have flexible communication capabilities, and to be able to travel light.

1. Research.

- Find a way to get rid of the Veil without a cataclysm. It is unnatural in its origin, and one way or another someone is going to eventually destroy it, or it may destabilize on its own; better to remove it in a way that it can't be weaponized against the most vulnerable Theadans, or make it dissipate over time.

- Inside intelligence. There have to be elves who have non-elven friends and family they want to protect. Get one or two inside his operation, and try to discover how he intends to use the mortal elves (like say in a giant blood magic ritual, or something), whether or not they believe their dormant magic and immortality will be restored (is he deceiving them about it?), where they are gathering, and when exactly Solas plans to destroy the Veil.

-  Dig for some truth that will put Solas off-balance, or make him reconsider (like with Calpernia and Corypheus) - like say if there was a very good reason Mythal got killed and it wasn't just a coup, or that destroying the Veil will have effects that he isn't accounting for, which will damage the remnants of his people.

- Figure out what was going on in Elvhenan when the Veil was made. Solas didn't seem particularly convincing when he said he could handle the false gods once they were free. If worse comes to worst and the Veil is destroyed, they will be free. Whatever destructive potential the Evanuris had when they were imprisoned, which Solas said they were going to use to destroy the world, it is doubtful it has been dealt with and needs to be countered with something less passive-aggressive than the Veil.

- Figure out how to protect people from the destruction of the Veil. If the prophecy in the Canticle of Exaltations and the prophecy Sandal gave are both correct, the bloody thing is coming down. Might as well be prepared.

2. Allies.

- Find other ancient elves who may be in opposition to him. The Forgotten Ones (three whom have names, Geldauran, Anaris and Daern'thal) are still out there, imprisoned by him, and are not behind the Veil, but in the Abyss/Void, which is suggested to be underground (they could be the Old Gods or aligned with the Forbidden Ones, but maybe not?). Somehow, I don't think they're going to be very friendly towards Solas, and will know how to counter his magic. Albeit, they may not be friendly towards you, either, but if they are weak like Solas was at first, they may see advantages to helping.

- Find a dreamer. Feynriel, if he isn't Tranquil, is one of the few people known who can walk the Fade like Solas, can kill or deliver messages via dreams. If he can be located, or another like him, it would be immensely useful.

- Find Valta and her Titan and propose an alliance. Considering the ancient elves hunted Titans to mine for lyrium, I doubt the Titans are all that interested in having the elves rule over the world again. Valta seems to be able to connect with the Titan and know its will, if there is a way that they can help she will know.

- Use the Seekers. Cassandra is reforming them and rebuilding them; they are more powerful than Templars and can nullify magic or set a mage's blood on fire. Very useful against a highly magic-dependent race like the Elvhen.

3. Communication.

- Set up your own network of Eluvians. The Inquisition has the plans for construction of them from the Qunari base, they need three or four in strategic locations, or built small enough to be able to move them quickly and without disruption.

- Communication crystals. Dorian gave what is basically a cell phone crystal to the Inquisitor, so they exist. Instantaneous communication is invaluable against someone like Solas, who can send messages through dreams - as long as he does not have a way to intercept the messages.

Can't be Morrigan.  Can't really be the Inquisitor either.  For the same reason, the Well of Sorrows.  I mean sure they may have removed the Guis I think they did, bt then...in Morrigan's case.  Morrigna is well known to Solas.  Unless of course Flemeth was designing her specifically to be an anti Solas weapon...which I find unlikely.  Anyways start in Tevinter.  the new Tevinter is very unknown.  And then of course another intersting possibility would be the Qunari/ Tal-vashoth you can get your hands on.  Solas HATES them, thinks them brutish and simple, so build an army out of someone he underestimates, to over play him.  Like when Picard became Locutus.  Same thing with the Grey Wardens.

I'm not really sure. Solas seems to know sooo much more than us, and we are believing him at this point, and it is possible he's not 100% truthful so knowing where to start is har. We also don't know the forces opposed to the Veil. It is hinted the Titans do not like the Veil, as when you talk to Cole he says Templars/Dwarves are reaching for something older and are incomplete. Now maybe that just means they need a Valta moment, but if you think about Valta/the Titan for a second, the Titan woke up because of 1) The Magisters first breaching the Veil 2) Corypheus re-breaching the Veil. This to me implies Titans are opposed to the Veil as well. So they might not be good allies. Mythal/Morrigan/Flemeth might not be good allies as well, as they are all about restoration of the past and Mythal wants a "reckoning that will shake the very heavens," and opposed to "things [that] happened which were never meant to happen," which sounds like destroying the Veil and punishing the Pantheon. So who do you turn to for knowledge to counter Solas?

I think the Old Gods and the Blight. Solas seems upset at killing the Old Gods. Why? Now that we know his plan, does destroying the Old Gods do something that actively opposes his plan? Similarly, Mythal preserved Urthemiel's soul, which to me implies that these Old God things are important to both Solas and Mythal, so finding out why might reveal answers. I'm not saying we do this but I feel like this is a path of knowledge that might lead somewhere. Also, Solas was thoroughly shocked that Cory had unlocked the secrets of "effective immortality," which seems to mean being ageless AND being able to survive death (like Mythal? like how he implies the Pantheon works?). Knowing why/how this process works might be the secret to foiling Solas' plans again, and if we know more, it may be a back up plan to surviving the tearing down of the Veil.

As to convincing Solas the world is worth keeping as is... I'm not sure that will work. By the end of DAI you can be a Dalish (Elf) leading one of the most powerful organizations in the world, have put Briala in a position of power, encouraged peace and alliances across the South and even with Tevinter, have helped your Clan secure a place of power in Wycome, have stopped a dark mirror version of Solas, have helped mages, have installed Leliana as Divine, and uncovered truths long thought lost. You can even get him to like you so much our prudish wolf God touches your girl-elf booty. Yet, Solas still feels there is no hope... so what does he want? I feel like the way the writers will have to write the story to incorporate the two possibilities of opposing or persuading Solas, that something will be revealed that keeps you from persuading Solas no matter what and it comes down to stopping him. Because otherwise you'd have a setting so divergent that they can do nothing beside destroy it all (which is possible), end the story ambiguously (which would suck), or write two separate worlds for each new game because the reforms required to convince Solas against his plan seem completely world-changing (which sounds hard to implement two settings from here on out).

I would do a couple things.

-My biggest thing would be to find Morrigan. I think she would be the biggest weapon in our arsenal, so to speak. If she drank from the Well, that makes her even more important. In terms of general knowledge, I know of no other person so well versed in both eluvians and esoteric magic in general.

-Set up a network of people that we implicitly trust. I have no freaking idea how to get around the elven thing, short of barring all elves from helping us. Any of them could be potential spies for Solas. I wish it were otherwise, but I don't know what else to do.

-Make a phone call to Dorian, and have him dig up anything and everything he's got on magical foci, what the Imperials call the "somnaborium". Also have Viv scrounge up anything that she can as well.

-Vacate Skyhold. It's far, far too easy to have that place be used against us by Solas.

-No mirrors. Smash any and all mirrors wherever we hole up.

-Get Cassandra working on training the new Seekers in anti-magic abilities (when she's not doing her Divine thing).

-Varric needs to call in every favor he's got to get working on finding me information

-Dagna needs to start theorizing everything that she can about the Stone, lyrium, and runes, and how we could use it either as a defense or weapon

-Find freaking Valta, now. Could we maybe get help from the Titan?

Investigate Ancient Elf stuff. Research the veil and the fade. Not only is that likely to be important in itself, but it gives you a good chance of bumping into his agents doing similar things.

Go over anything you've got from Corypheus that might shed light. Maybe even try to contact the Architect, if the Inquisition has any idea he exists. Calpernia would also be a good person to consult.

Poke around in your own head for Well of Sorrows stuff. Or look for Morrigan. Actually, look for Morrigan anyway

Tracking back his agents is another thing to do, but if he followed his own advice to Sera that's unlikely to yield much. Still got to do it just in case, everyone screws up at some point.

Build up the Seekers (as Trevelyan disbanded the Inquisition).

Make allies of Tevinter Magisters or powerful Laetans and Lucerni, and gain as much knowledge from Tevinter as possible. Solas greatly underestimated Cory, and Cory was obviously of the blight (an unknown) and human (a known), but he still expected elf magic to be too much for Cory? Cory just needed the blight to survive the explosion, he was handling that orb just fine when he wasn't trying to punch a metaphysical hole into reality.

Research more ways to counter magic and strengthen the Veil if need be. Build up the Templar Order while such research continues.

Make more dwarven allies.

Just some things that pop into my head...
