Exactly as the topic says. I've been thinking a lot about it, and much as i love getting to pick my race (elf, elffy elf, ellfy, elf, elf, elf) I wonder if its entirely a good thing. Does limiting the potential background allow for a stronger narrative? Or is it just that any future game should be written with multiple races in mind from the outset?

Choice in a game is always a good thing but realistically there are finite resources in any project. Would you rather see them going towards something else?

Ultimately, I think I come down on the side of getting to be an elf pick the race, but I'm curious what other think.

I've created a poll here : I am a Poll

EDIT: Huge thanks to everyone who posted and/or voted. Final tally at 660 votes cast (I was very tempted to wait for just 6 more), the poll will stay open but I won't be updating it here any more.

Results so far : Results in blue from 133 votes cast, votes in red from 297 and votes in green from 474, and votes in purple from final tally of 660

Would be nice but not a deal breaker: 41% 28% 26% 27%

One set race, I'm not greedy my good sir2% 15% 22% 23%

Would rather a set race but not a deal breaker: 16% 28% 24% 23%

It's a must for me. I will figuratively die without it: 34% 22% 21% 20%

Don't care either way. I'm easy like Sunday morning: 9% 7% 6% 6%

Well, I was glad that race selection returned for Inquisition. I liked Hawke, but having a choice to experience each new game setting from a variety of backgrounds, races and genders is what I love most about the franchise. I could say not having race selection continue is the best way to keep my interest in DA4 remain very high.

I've got male & female Inquisitors of each race, and I love them all!

Not having races makes no sense unless you're playing a premade character like Hawke and I hope DA never treads on that path again so....yeah. I'll figuratively die without it.

I picked "Ability to choose protagonist race is a must" because replayability is high on my priority list. I prefer playing humans and dwarves and dislike playing elves, so the only option which would satisfy both me and the OP is to offer a range of racial choices.

IF we get a new protagonist next game then it's very important to me. I enjoy playing humans but I quite enjoyed playing an elf this time since I felt it fit in the story better.

And while I did enjoy Hawke, I have to say I enjoyed him the least of all my PCs because Hawke never felt like he was truly MY PC. Hawke felt more like playing BioWare's PC.

I think it dramatically improved DAI and I think it is a great feature. I hope they have it in DA4 but I will buy it regardless.

Vital to my enjoyment of the game.

Hawke got away with it 'cause 1) snarky Hawke is best Hawke, and 2) the knowledge that the next game would most likely have race selection, which it did. I wouldn't want to go back to a human-only protagonist, ever.

To me the race doesn't care, is just one or two dialogues more. In DA:O the race was the most important of the game, but in Inquisition...

Very, I like variety. Even though all my inkys so far have been humans and elves lol. I'll get around to trying out a qunari or a dwarf someday, maybe, probably. Nice to have the option at least.

Depends on how much emphasis will be put in the background of a race-selection. If it's some kind of origin story which would let us connect with PC, then I'm all for it. If it's few bugged lines of dialogue ("Who's Mythal?") - then not worth the effort, imho.

Not so much really. I crave a good story. If it means I have to play as a set character and set race, then so be it.

I'd prefer race selection. It adds variation to the game. I'll get the game either way so it's not a deal breaker, but I'd much prefer it if there's not a set race.

It made a really big difference in DA:O with the origin stories, but was mostly cosmetic in DA:I, with only a few scenes having slightly altered dialogue. Either way, I prefer having more choices at CC, but it is better if the choice is more relevant to the story and character interactions.

I'm apparently one of the few who don't care much for race selection, because I actually prefer some restrictions on both background and behavior if that helps make a protagonist fit her intended role in the story better. If I don't like the premise of the character, her role and her story, I simply won't buy the game. Race selection wouldn't change that, and can sometimes "weaken" a character. For example, in a dwarf-focused story, I would very much like to play a dwarf from the old dwarven culture and with a working Stone-sense. Putting in the necessary effort to make the letter a tangible and meaningful thing probably wouldn't be in the books if it was a multi-race game.

I rarely replay games, so having more choices to pick from doesn't enchance replay value for me, especially if the races amount to little more than cosmetic differences and a few different dialog options anyway. And as far as cosmetic differnces go, I'd rather have a greater selection of body types for a single set race rather than the tired old Hulks and Barbies for everyone. Of course, body type variation and race choice would be good too.

How would people feel about it just being a choice between human and elf? I have nothing against Dwarf or Qunari of course, but they require more resources to fit into the world - both story-wise (being a qunari in the tevinter imperium would be somewhat difficult!) and in terms of getting them to interact with other characters in cinematics. So personally I'd rather the devs spend those resources elsewhere (eg. more detailed backstories/dialogue options for the player character) but then I'm not invested in playing those races so easy for me to say I guess!

Not a deal breaker for me. I like that it is there in inquisition(well fact elven origin is there due to the story connections).
If the next story works best as a single race like da2 did then I wouldn't complain either.
Assume some element of selection will remain.

(being a qunari in the tevinter imperium would be somewhat difficult!)

You think?

It is for this very reason, that I suspect that a Qunari race option for the next game is a dodgy prospect at best (and if they opt not to allow it, I do not see why humans, elves or dwarves wouldn't be included as choices).

My canon is basically "all elves, all the time", so an elven player character is really important me. So, if elves were the only available race, I wouldn't miss the race selection.  :P But since that is highly unlikely (or is it, after Trespasser?), yeah, race selection is important. Not a deal breaker, though.

I'm happy to have race selection but I'd very much like to see my choice of race is acknowledged more often than not. Being able to play as a Qunari is fairly superficial is you are hardly considered one by many of your companions or NPCs.

If race selection does return, I'd like to see origin stories make a comeback. To give the PC some background, context and sense of belonging rather than just existing to become a title as the Inquisitor was. Reading about how Arl Howe betrayed the Warden and killed their family (human noble origin) in my opinion is inferior to actually being able to experience and play such a horrible scenario for yourself as we were in Dragon Age Origins.

It depends really. Elves and humans always get good effort as both where done well in DAO and DAI(the infamous bugged who's mythal not withstanding) Dwarves and qunari where rather poor in DAO (the whole thing with the fade was a massive cop out for Oghren and dwarven warden, and the romance scenes... shutters) and DAI, so if they don't get the same effort as elves and humans, they might as well not include them imo.

Ha, I was trying to be diplomatic! Good ole English understatement doesn't always come off well on the interweb ;)

Dwarf is definitely more viable, yes (the imperium has an alliance with them if I recall correctly). But dwarf would still have similar complications regarding their interaction with other characters (especially in romance scenes). If the next protagonist is to be a slave - wild speculation here but I think it would be really cool - a dwarf wouldn't work as none of them are enslaved by tevinter because of aforesaid alliance.

Ya that link doesn't work for me... but anyway I want it to at least be possible to play as the inquisitor. So I think race selection would have to be there for that to happen.

Where would the opinion "only if it makes a true difference in the game" fit in the poll?

I rather be stuck with a human with a tighter background to make up for it honestly.  The choosing your race I find...kind of meh? And with the way BW fumbled the Qunari smh.
