Chose that I would figuratively die, but that's not strictly correct. I would figuratively die if I was forced to play human again - I don't mind a fixed race, as long as it's not human.

I will not buy another DA game if the protagonist gets the Hawke treatment.  The only thing that saved it for me was Mr. Boulton's sexy voice.

Bioware has really opened up the floodgates as relates to options with this series. Race, sex, romance, armor, weapons, trials, dialogue wheel, crafting, etc. Pandoras box has been opened- every option available now will now be expected in futures series and more.

Probably not very much in the long run, you may get one or two different variations in dialog but as far as I can tell picking a race matters very little

As with anything else, each player must decide for herself (or himself) which role-playing decisions "matter".

As it happens, a lot of folks feel very strongly about their characters' race. No matter how much or how little the game reacts to that choice, it's important to many players because it helps them identify with and care about their characters. Therefore, the ability to choose is important to them.

The thing with race selection is there will always be compromises elsewhere. How many times have you heard folks say the qunari felt lackluster in DA:I?

It wouldn't really matter to me either way, but some of you guys should be careful what you wish for.

I honestly wouldn't play the next game if I had to play an elf. If we're stuck with one race, I'd rather it be a human...even though I never rolled one for DA:I

They will never make a sequel in which you're stuck with a non-human race. I think that much is safe to assume.

ving more choices to pick from doesn't enchance replay value for me, especially if the races amount to little more than cosmetic differences and a few different dialog options anyway. And as far as cosmetic differnces go, I'd rather have a greater selection of body types for a single set race rather than the tired old Hulks and Barbies for everyone. Of course, body type variation and race choice would be good too.

I couldn't agree more with this! Gaming should move past having one model for everyone of the same gender in the world. Having even three sets to choose from would help greatly for customization and NPC diversity. Different builds might not even require different animations, either. I'm just so sick of the ridiculously exaggerated "ideal" models for both males and females.

As for race selection, I would be all for it if it actually made a meaningful enhancement to the story and didn't take too many resources away from other aspects. I've only played humans so far in Dragon Age. I'm not sure exactly why. Sometimes I think of using another race, but just end up being a human again. Maybe I find it more relatable? *shrug*

Personally, I hope the Inquisitor will return, so race selection would be a given in that case. But I think they'll have it regardless since they put it in Inquisition because of the outcry for it. This time they won't make the mistake of putting it in near the end of development; they'll have it from the beginning. Hopefully that will mean it will actually be meaningful.

Exactly as the topic says. I've been thinking a lot about it, and much as i love getting to pick my race (elf, elffy elf, ellfy, elf, elf, elf) I wonder if its entirely a good thing. Does limiting the potential background allow for a stronger narrative? Or is it just that any future game should be written with multiple races in mind from the outset?

Choice in a game is always a good thing but realistically there are finite resources in any project. Would you rather see them going towards something else?

Ultimately, I think I come down on the side of getting to be an elf pick the race, but I'm curious what other think.

I've created a poll here : I am a Poll

EDIT: Wow, thanks to everyone who posted and/or voted so far. Only been a few hours and already over 100 votes.

As it stands right now (133 votes) the results are:

Would be nice but not a deal breaker: 41%

It's a must for me. I will figuratively die without it: 34%

Would rather a set race but not a deal breaker: 16%

Don't care either way. I'm easy like Sunday morning: 9%

One set race, I'm not greedy my good sir: 2%

I don't like admitting that I'm easy.

One race is fine if they look at peoples mods for all their games and think "Hey, we should really give better options in character creator." and then make a really awesome CC with tons of choices.

After everything revealed in Jaws, Descent and Trespasser, and all the great things I got to experience as non-human characters in Inquisition before them, race selection is very important to me.

Strictly speaking, if there's no race selection, I won't buy the game.

Very. The idea that having a character of a fixed race will give us a better story looks to me to be faulty. Dragon Age 2 didn't exactly have a better story with an only human Hawke?

The idea isn't that it will make a "better" story, but it will make a more personal story. It doesn't guarantee it, but it is a lot easier with human-only. DA2's story was more personal, though I liked how much more personal Trespasser was that the base game. So like I said, it's no guarantee.

DA2 DID have potential, but Kirkwall, Hawkes divine bad luck, act 3 ect just ruined it.

On the other hand, Tresspasser did turn out to be a better personal story because it didn't focus on saving the world like DAO and base DAI did. What a set PC CAN achieve is better characterization, but outside snarky Hawke, her other two personalities where pretty meh, add the lack of being proactive and her horrible bad luck it just hurt it which is a shame because Hawke could have been Biowares Nameless one.

That and it means the character him/herself has more flavor and personality.  They got around it somewhat for the Warden by going mostly voiceless and giving way more conversation options (though even then, Hawke still has more sense of personality).  Quizzie they tried to have their cake and eat it too...and I doubt they'll ever turn back the clock on voiced protagonists at this point, but I think we have a better chance of one with a limited history.

In its current state not important. In DAO being a different race hade more replay value due to origins. Inquisition your race mainly only effect two romances. Those few dialogue choices was nice for your personal headcanon but did nothing for your character in game. I am all for race selection as long as the background story is playable and not readable and if there was in game side quest what varied on each race. The more its felt in game you are playing a certain race The better. If DA4 is in tevinter hopefully we can feel that effect elves should feel like they don't belong during there experience and treated horribly. Dwarves should feel like the accepted outsider. Humans experience depends if we are native to the land or mages. Qunari is gonna take some fantastic writing to explain how u can walk around in a kill on site nation. Maybe Qunari and elves start somewhere different and humans and Dwarves start in tevinter. But really i don't care i will play the game either way as long as the story fits whatever we are given can't really complain race was never a major selling point and a human only protagonist will not majorly effect sells given only the hardcore fanbase will mainly have a issue with some many successful human only rpgs casual fans won't care as long as combat and story is good.

I play master race human, and since they'll never be unavailable in the game I don't really care. Though, I would be sad for mein dwarf buddies if dwarves were excluded.

This is really overdue, for both PCs and NPCs. I'd kill to finally be able to play a warrior who actually looks like one.

Same. Otherwise, as long as the premise is right and the model doesn't put me off (painfully scrawny female elves, female dwarves who don't look like dwarves i.e. stocky and heavyset at all), I'm open to playing just about anything.

Good point. And yes, I really hope the Inquisitor will be back, and under played control in some capacity.

Must be more or less. I almost never play humans, usually dwarves and after DAI, after dwarves Quanari. Dwarf or bust.

I would like for them to dissolve the notion that its either A) Set Race or B) Strong Narrative.

It could easily be both if they wanted them to a priority.  Personally, I find Inquisition to be a much better story through an elven perception than I do a human or other race.   However, we all know that a set race will always be 'human only'.    Thus, given the option I will always desire a race choice for protagonists.

Armor means even less, I guess they should only make one of that as well.
