Each of the DLC from Inquisition dwelved deeper into the lore of the franchise and raised more questions.

While Jaws of Hakkon dwells on the nature of the Avvar and their beliefs, an important discovery is that dragons can become abominations too and when combined with a powerful spirit the resulting being is something arguably godlike.

It is said that arch demons, while tainted, are neither dragon nor dark spawn but something else entirely with emphasis on the demon part.

My theory is that the Old Gods are actually great dragons (the kind Yavana was trying to awake), possessed by extremely powerful spirits (possibly the Forgotten Ones from elven lore) and when the darkspawn taint them they corrupt the great dragon part (arch = great) and twist the spirit into a demon.

Hence the arch demons are a cocktail of dragon, demon and darkspawn mixed into something really nasty.

It also explains why FleMythal was interested in purifying the soul of Urthamiel, if he indeed was a Forgotten One possessing a dragon then turning him back from a demon into a spirit meant rescuing something of extreme importance to the elven people since we now know their gods turned out to be jerkasses.

Except as someone else mentioned in another thread, the taint seems not sit well with the denizens of the Fade.

How so?

Avernus says demons are unfamiliar to the blight. They don't understand it.

Avernus says demons are unfamiliar to the blight. They don't understand it.

That doesn't mean an abomination can't be tainted into something worse than it already was.

It's not like old gods become arch demons because they want to and if I am not mistaken Hakkon was bound to the body of a dragon rather than willing possessing it thanks to blood magic.

Under normal circumstances, spirits and demons would leave their hosts the moment it becomes tainted but just as in the case of Sophia Dryden the demons possessing the Warden bodies were summoned and controlled by blood magic.

Speaking of Sophia, she was unlike any other abominations we faced in the games. Despite not being a mage she wielded powers which rivalled Avernus, who in turn had dabbled in centuries of blood magic experiments with the taint to increase his own power and lifespan. Not just that but she fought with just the body she had rather than going one-winged angel like every other abomination does.

A measle human/warden abomination, a ghoul with a demon trapped within it had powers unlike any other demon or darkspawn we fought and the guy responsible for it's creation even admitted this sort of thing was odd as hell because spirits fear the taint like something completely eldritch.

It makes you wonder what sort of effect the taint would have if it corrupted a far stronger spirit with a far stronger host.

Corypheus and the magisters were tainted while physically present in the Fade, their own corruption was far different from normal ghouls because the taint twisted their spirits rather than just their bodies.

In normal ghoullification, the mind of the tainted slowly corrodes into that of a beast to the point when they eventually become soulless monsters such as brood mothers and are thus eligible to serve as host for the arch demons.

However, the likes of Corypheus had their very souls tainted and not only they retain their intelligence but they even develop abilities similar to arch demons.

If those who have their souls rather than just their bodies tainted develop into some sort of corrupted ghost with control over other darkspawn and the ability to surf bodies within the taint then it's not far fetched to think that the souls of arch demons used to be extremely powerful spirits, possibly even that of elven gods/mages who were bond to dragons through blood magic.

The Chant of Light says that the Old Gods were spirits who decided to rule over the earth instead of the just the Fade, turning themselves into demons in the process, that the Maker trapped in a prison of rock down in the earth.

So possessed dragons aren't out of the question, they make nice body to possess.
