I Just played Mass Effect and I enjoyed the fast pace with the four main digestible areas.  Are there any similarities between DAO and Mass Effect?

I'd like Dragon Age to be like that because it goes by much easier.   I don't want to even think of playing though DAI because it a slog. Maybe a slight exaggeration there!

I thought the story in Mass Effect was pretty good.  Was that more like DAO or DAI?

I believe Mass Effect series was intended to look more like a movie kinda thing (hence more action oriented game play - it's more 3rd person shooter than RPG to my mind) whereas DAO is more of a traditional RPG game with strategy-like combat. My honest opinion is that both series should do their own thing... I enjoyed both games (didn't play DAI yet) for what they are. With DA2 the series got a lot of Mass Effect features into it, which I'm not a fan of...

I haven't played DAI yet, so I can't compare, but I'd say it depends on what you like about ME. I would also say that ME and DAO are quite similar in the terms of storytelling and characters. Your experience is heavily based on these two aspects. The gameplay is, however, significantly different - slower, you can control all characters, it sort of has strategic elements. If you have experience with Neverwinter Nights or Baldur's Gate, it's closer to that than Mass Effect when it comes to gameplay. Personally, I love both ME's and DAO's gameplay style and find them both a lot of fun.

I found DAI a slog (no exaggeration) I doubt I will play it again.
DAO is slower paced than Mass Effect, RPG as apposed to shooter.
But it is broken down into bite sized chunks.(although Orzammar & the deep roads is a bit of a mouthful)
Romance options with your companions are more fleshed out than Mass Effect.
I love Origins & the Mass Effect Trilogy, but Liara is no Leliana.
I'm not saying to play the game just to romance Leliana....
The Origin stories alone are worth the price of admission.
Did I mention Leliana?

I prefer my RPGs to be like DA trilogy and not a third person shooter like the ME trilogy.

I never was one that wanted to rush through any RPG since I buy these things to enjoy and get the best play value out of the game.Your mileage may vary and that's fine too since we all have our style of game play.

As far as DA:I I am enjoying my first play through, maybe not as much as I do playing DA:O or DA:2 but, still I'm  enjoying the game.I do however, hate the fine print and because of that it will probably become a 2-3 times a year game unlike my favorite RPGs which I play on a routine bases.

I love Dragon Age (DAO and DA2, haven't play DAI yet) and just started with ME now for the first time. Both are great in storytelling and characterisation. In fact, I think Garrus might become one of my favorite alltime Bioware companions (which would put him in good companionship with Kivan, Jan, Zevran, Sten, Anders, Varric, Mission, Mira and some others).

The gameplay is different, but I found it easy to adjust from DA to ME. The areas in DAO are similar: You have five or six big areas (plus Ostagar and one different area in the human noble origin) with main and side quests, some random encounters on the road and some areas, that only open up, if you do certain quests.  But mainly its a handful of big areas. Luckily there is nothing similar to the Mako. I do so suck in driving that damn thing, I always imagine Garrus sitting there wheeping because my Shepherd hits every rock there is  :D and he has to repair it later on the Normandy.

What I don't like in ME are those planet quests, which are kind of repetative and boring. They could have combined some of the very short planet quests to one or two bigger ones, That's a bit better in DA imo - there are fewer sidequests and they are much more interesting (Crime Wave is my favorite and those silly quests, you can do for the Mage Collective).

But of course, I can only compare to ME1, I haven't played the others yet

Nope. It's not. It's nothing like ME, their In two different worlds and in two different setting and DA plays with mutilply player controlled PCS while Shepard is the main and only PC. And then there's the high fantasty/ medieval setting of DA and the techno, geeky unverise of ME. Plus, there billions upon trillions away (in years) away form each other. And no, I pefer DA, no ME for me please. Don't mix up the two galaxies please. I beg of you, Bioware.

Here's the difference for me: (first impressions)
Dragon Age Origins: I love you! You is soooooo wow! Oh man! Mouse! Noooo! Hehe! Take that Jowan! Ooooooowned!
Mass Effect: Okay... So I'm in a space ship and... There's a spaceship.... And I'm talking to people... Oh shame, that guy died. Who was he again? HOLY CROW! IS THAT AN IMPALED BODY?! Oh look an alien... Hi! Hey! Why u shoot that guy?

My later impressions are weighted in favour of Dragon Age, but that might be because I never ACTUALLY finished Mass Effect. But seriously. I just want to cry whenever I think of those barren planets... And. That. Stupid. Awful. Horrible. Terrible. Nightmarish. May-it-burn-in-hell. Mako.
I also no like shooters. Except Lara Croft. I likes that.

No! These are two very different games. I don't even play the ME series anymore. I don't care for shooter games. I only play the DA series because I'm interested in their lore. I really don't like just eight buttons in DAI. I prefer more strategy and less button pushing.
