I am encountering a wierd texture rendering problem if that is, what it is after all. I get small black/grey squares flickering and blinking all over my screen. This is the first game in which this has happened. I played Dragon Age before this, and I haven't seen any sing off this rendering problem in that game.

I tried reinstalling the game, updating the drivers, updaring DirectX,  messing around with CCC different settings such as enabling AA, disabling AS etc.

My spec is:

Intel Dual Core E4400 @ 2.00 GHz
ATI Sapphire Radeon HD 5700 with 1GB VRAM
2 GB of RAM
Gigabyte P35-DS3 motherboard
Windows XP SP3

I took a picture of my problem here:

http://i579.photobuc...reenShot001.jpg

I only managed to print screen those, usually there are like 40+ on screen at a time, blinking, flickering and annoying me....

If anyone has a solution, I would appriciate it.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that this is happening in Mass Effect 2 in the normal shop DVD version (not Steam)

I tried increasing my GPU fan speed, as well as underclocking it. No joy.

I'm having the exact same problem and can't seem to find any answer as well. Good luck. It keeps making me think my graphics card is overheating which definitely isn't the case.

A little update and a bump:

I ran Mass Effect 1 and I get the same texture rendering problem. Meanwhile I tried running Sins of a Solar Empire, and no bad texture rendering there.

Did you check your internal components to make sure there was no dust build-up/clumps in the GPU/GPU cooling vents/grills? Air duster can can clean out a pc's internals pretty quick. (Just make sure you're outside when you do it!)

I opened my PC today and cleaned the dust that was on the CPU fan, but the GPU is brand new and there was barely any dust on it, so I don't think that's causing it. And the problem persists after the clean up.

I bought Bioshock 2 today, and I have the same problem there as I have in Mass Effect 1 and 2. I thought my GPU doesn't like UT3 engine, but I am running Dragon Age w/o any problems, so that leaves me confused...

There is limited crossover between Dragon Age and ME2, mainly no more than a generally similar minimum requirement. Both are Dx9.0"c", not Dx10, both have the CPU based PhysX, and I can't think of anything else.

Any 3D video device maker is occasionally going to release a driver that conflicts with one game or another. ATI has been developing their GPU's architectural structure for several years now, and generally seems to have somewhat less problem with their HD 3n00s (other than the 3870) and 4n00s than anyone else has been able to do lately.

Their 5n00s are slightly newer, and you will likely need to try different drivers, and also to install a temperature monitoring utility to discover any heat-related artifacts.  Speedfan is one such:

Thanks for the info.

I installed the new ATI drivers(released today) and almost maxed out my GPU fan speed, but no change. Gonna try downgrading again and installing a few more games too see if there is any corelation.

I think that you have a bad memory cell in your graphics card. I think that I remember ATI having software that will go test their video card's memory. But this is where my knowledge ends. If the bad memory cell(s) are higher up in the memory address range, only games that need more memory would should this problem. Sins of a Solar Empire is rather lightweight when it comes to graphics.

I also downgraded my drivers, but that did little....

I downloaded a program that stresses a video card's memory, as well as SiS Sandra, and both of them came up empty handed. They didn't find any errors on my vRAM.

Tbh, I wished they would, at least then, I would have something to blame for those annoying flickering boxes...

Funny you should mention this problem...

I reinstalled ME1 after a long time, and when the game first started, it showed the default male Shepard standing in some area of the game briefly... Then the main menu came up. I mention this, because when it showed default male Shepard in some area of the game, all the walls and everything were nothing but black and grey squares. They weren't flickering, it was just as if it showed without any textures or shaders loaded/compiled.

I do recall someone else having this same problem, but with green dots instead of black. Might want to search down that thread too, see if they found a fix for it. EDIT: I found the thread here but it doesn't seem that a fix was ever found... Unfortunately, it appeared to be a hardware issue, as well.

Try going to masseffectconfig.exe (for ME1), and go to repair and try to "delete local shader cache files". See if that helps in ME1... As for ME2, there is no such repair option under masseffect2config.exe.

Might want to try defragmenting your hard drive, too.

lol I just realized, I have pretty close to the same specs you do:

Core 2 Duo E6300
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 motherboard
2gb of RAM
WXP SP3

but I have a GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512mb for videocard. Out of curiosity, what is the wattage of your PSU?

EDIT: Do you have and/or know how to use a digital multimeter? Cause if you do, you might want to check the voltage on your +12v rail. If it's too high or low, it can cause damage to your videocard over time, with similar symptoms to those you are experiencing. Normal voltage for it is 12-12.3v, 12.4v is okay but pushing it... 12.5v or higher, you either need to have it repaired (your PSU should have a warranty) or replaced. Contact tech support for your videocard too, and mention the graphical problems, they may know more. They should also be ready to accept an RMA request, in the event that the card is bad.

Here is a great guide on how to use a DMM to test your powersupply's rails. You can pick one up at Radioshack for $30-$40.

I have a CoolerMaster PSU of 430W, and I think it handles my system rather ok (or at least it should).

But, if voltage on my PSU was too low, wouldn't that cause system instability and constant reboots?

As far as my HDD is concerned, I have a program that defragments it every day while I am working, and I checked it for bad sectors a few weeks back.

Could the graphic issue be caused by a faulty motherboard? It's been acting kinda strangely, as in, it some does a BIOS beep, a sometimes turns on normal.

Changed my PSU to a more stronger one, problem still persists. It's more and more looking like corrupted VRAM. I have put my older GPU in, and there are no problems, so I'm going to put my new GPU in my friend's PC and see what happens.

Im not sure if this is related to your issue or not but I am experiencing a problem where all the character's eyes are solid black... which just doesnt seem normal.

I don't know what possessed the poster just above you to dig this long-dead thing up again.  The empty eye sockets is a repeated symptom, and I may have saved a link to a thread about it, otherwise use Search to look it up.

Nope, sorry, I hadn't saved anything about that, only about a lack of any eye color options in Dragon Age.
