I like the look of ME2 N7 armor, as long as it is modified with a couple upgrade pieces.

As for whether or not armor classes really mattered on ME1, some characters didn't have the option to change armor level, but on some of the classes you had to unlock the higher tier armor, which meant sinking talent points.  Maybe not the most elegant solution, but you did have to give up a couple things to get heavier armor in your build (or at the least delay getting them), in addition to the small mobile accuracy penalty.

In Starship Troopers (the novel) grunts wore advanced armour that allowed them to jump quite a long distance, survive in non O2 atmospheres  and the trooper carried nuke  missiles (small caliber ) and  their hand weapons. Each trooper's communications gear tapped into the local Command Net that provided them with the immediate tactical situation on their HUD.

Yes, this was essentially the birth of the combat exosuit idea (1959).

I would it prefer if armour was more like it was in the first game.

My armor is preferably light one because that looks the best, with heavy protection and fantastic mobility because that's where I tend to invest when playing. Ok so hoping I get to use biotic barriers. Preferably armor's shiny, and you can alter the colors. But that's the practical part of your life anyway, more important is how you're dressing up between missions. Hooray.

I don't want to equip other party members, let them dress up suitably for the mission by themselves. Though alternative outfits like in ME2 would be nice, they change sometimes too. Or at least having different wear for outdoors and indoors is maybe enough.

I should play the series again sometime soon. I don't remember armor differences in ME2 and 3 anymore, if there even were any, just remember the colours and textures, which I sometimes tuned to fit with what I hoped or feared from the upcoming mission. ME1 armors are easy to remember but that system was my least favorite because of cluttering item menu and equipping taking regularly so much time in comparison.

Thing is, let the ones that want to gear up their companions manually have the option to do so.  Also, let the ones who don't want to micromanage their companions, have the option to auto-equip armor and weapons (this features allows for the companions to select the best available gear and weapons) and auto-assign companion points for skill trees.
