The poor fool is a magical anomaly if I ever saw one. I've never heard of magical talent manifesting in an adult (which I assume he is, seeing how he didn't grow into being a Saarebas and was once a teacher).

There's a Codex Entry you can find in the Darvaarad in a form of a correspondence addressed to Tallis. The writer opens his letter with "it is no longer [his] role to instruct others in the Qun", and goes on to explain that he was once a teacher before his "dreams of demons took [him] down a new path". His handwriting is noted to be progressively shakier, includes crossed out passages and trains of thought, and he even admits it's becoming difficult to find wisdom in "the noise". And the letter is signed "Saarath". At first, I didn't understand that the writer and the huge Qunari were one and the same. I can't play the DLC myself, so I only managed to read the codices at the video-maker's discretion. I learned Saarath's name and role as final boss before I learned it was him that wrote the letter.

I pity the man. Manifested magical powers in adulthood, and it couldn't have happened in a more magic-conservative culture. Poor guy. I still want to know why the guy's so freaking big; I took him for an ogre when I first saw the Trespasser trailer. No Qunari can be that big naturally, can they?

Well they become Ogres when consumed by the taint, and the Arishok was pretty frickin' huge in DA II, so it's easily possible. But I have a feeling they also pumped Saarath up with lyrium to enhance his magical abilities.

I have to say that what really left me speachless was how ******* determined was to kill you. Seriously, during the fight you can feel his desperation if pay close attention.

Wild magic? Maybe he was using blood magic and didn't even realise it. I got the impression Saarebas don't actually know what they're doing, they're just relying on magical instinct.

Maybe the taint is involved,  but it doesn't work like that: Darkspawn capture a Qunari female, they make her become a Broodmother and then they can have Ogres. You can't just transform a Qunari into an Ogre, just like you can't transform a human into a Hurlock...

In other words, when people gets consumed by the taint, they just die or become  ghouls, never darkspawn.

I am wondering what Saarath's role within the Qun is? Unlike the others he is not a "Saarabas" by definition because he doesn't have the "bas" within his title. Bas is an implication of being purposeless and is used by Qunari as an insult if not an outright swear word which makes sense given that they view their mages as defective tools.

Saarath is a special case, considering he was once a teacher. He likely retains many of the skills he acquired.

Saarath would've become a ghoul then, and likely would've sought out other Darkspawn, so I don't think it could be the taint at all. Nothing Saarath wrote mentions contact with any of them, and there are Qunari who have multiple pairs of horns and are pretty intimidating in stature.

Imagine how much simpler life would be had Prosper gotten that list.

But he did get that list: he was just too foolish to realizes its value

Is Saarath really a name? I thought Qunari don't have them, they have job descriptions. There could be other Saaraths out there.

I always feel sorry for the Saarebas, but I have to admit Saarath was a badass. He was a walking magical weapon. Anywhere else in the world he would be treated with respect and awe, yet under the Qun he's been made into an attack dog. Panahedan Saarebas.

It's a title like the others, we don't know what it means, Saarebas means "dangerous thing" perhaps Saarath is "dangerous-whatever he was prior to his magic manifested" or just means "Huge Saarebas doped in lyrium" and yes, I do think they made more than one, this one either was chosen by the Viddasala for the importance of his former role or he volunteered to protect the others, it was said they were going to sacrifice the Saarebas that agreed join to the mission.

Imagine if you have the chance to free one of those and train it as a companion on DA4, that would be awesome!

Only if he will act less like a trained animal from DA2 and more like intelligent person capable of independent thought. Otherwise it would be way too "damaged goods" to be interesting and I'm not sure BioWare will want to explore this side of slavery too close, especially if he's made a companion whom you have to care of. Allowing the protagonist to treat saarebas as a trained animal would be somewhere beyond M++.

Agreed.  The saarebas quest in DA2 was upsetting enough.

Well, I think that if a Saarebas joins to the team without an Avrvaard and without killing itself (like Ketojan) means that is not pleased of being used as a war dog, also, we are going to see slavery, it's Tevinter, but one thing is looking it and other is have a character that acts as a douchebag at slaves and Saarebas.

I want to know how/why Saarath was making the background grey with increasing black edges as the fight continued? Was it his doing or was it more to symbolize the impending death of the Inquisitor?

Saarath was going out of control and was clearly very powerful, perhaps he was close to demon possession?

Qunari as special. Corypheus say that they're not a race, just a "failed experiment" We know that their skin makes it so that certain combination of things will allow it to change properties: can either be as hard as steel, protect against magic, etc.

With that in mind, I do wonder if lyrium will have different effects on a saarebas

I noticed the very first attack he does at the beginning of that fight drains all of your focus. The Anchor is leaking a crazy amount of power by that point, maybe so much that he can draw from it?

It's not especially difficult for an irresponsible mage.  Plenty have done it.  (Heck my Warden did it three times without even being a mage.)

Would be interesting to know if a mage can unlock something like the muscles of a normal human being in extreme situation. Basically removing every failsafe and using the true potential at the cost of your own health. Red ring of doom, supercharging yourselve before the meltdown, something like that.

That's just regular old summoning demons. They didn't tear open the veil like the Saarath did. I don't see it as the same thing.

I feel like I would have appreciated the coolness more if he AND my stupid hand weren't both trying to kill me :P

Makes you wonder what exactly the qunari use to control a souped-up saarebas like that.  It would have to be something approaching a golem control rod in power, if not more.  Or maybe it's a combination of magical compulsion and psychological conditioning that would only work on loyal qunari.

I assume that it was mostly voluntary service from Saarath. We have seen with Ketojan that Saarebas are often just as willing than any other Qunari to serve the Qun. Which is way I would have loved a Saarebas companion in a game (with an Arvaarad one, in a sort of "couple" companion -not in the lover term of the word). Alas, with the way the story is moving forward, I can't see any future Qunari companion. At best some Tal-Vashoth who won't really teach us much about the Qun and the Qunari society.

It looked like Saarath turned into a huge Pride demon at one point, unless my targeting was wonky and that was a summoned demon - there was a lot of stuff going on at the time. I'll go with him 1) being abnormally huge for a qunari in the first place and 2) maybe being possessed by a demon (even if he wasn't that Pride demon I was trying to stomp).

I was leaning towards demonic possession, with the way his mental faculties seemed to be deteriorating over time based on the codex entry. The qunari were doing some really weird and unusual stuff (considering how much they hate/fear magic...), so maybe they purposely allowed demonic possession and twisted it in some way so that Saarath was still under control. Eh, who knows.

Your eyes deceived you; Saarath did indeed summon a Pride demon.

Saarath was probably fed red lyrium. There's some near where you find his note, he mentions a song (which is a very red templar/blighted thing to do), and he seems a little crazy in combat (which is a very red templar/blighted thing to do). We don't really know what happens when you give red lyrium to mages; apparently in turns them into giant destructive monsters.
