Whatever the case, it should not have an article in front of it.

I'm fine with SSV Tempest, or Tempest for short.

Tempest is a bad name because most people don't know what this word means. Typhoon, on the other hand, would be so much better since it exists in many languages.
On a more serious note if the ship hadn't been named the Tempest, I think the Odyssey would be a good name.
Phoenix would be cool.

If it were me, I'd call it The Alamo.
Same convention as the Normandy, named after a battle, but tying into the "Remember the Alamo!" battle cry, with the Milky Way being our Alamo.
Eh, might just be Texan bias.

I wish we could name it ourselves.
One of the things I like about Shadowrun: Hong Kong is that you can rename your base (which is a rusty old ship) to a few different options and all dialogue changes accordingly.
. . .The fact you can, in the middle of Hong Kong, name it to 'The Big Texas' pleases me on a spiritual level.

I would like that, probably not going to happen.
What type of ship will we actually have? We talking about a frigate, a Cruiser, a Dreadnaught?
If it's a frigate I am partial to one I made for a story I started writing, the SSV Nagashino.
If were talking Cruiser, SSV New York of course.
Dreadnaught, SSV Kamet
Of course, this implies human ships will be the norm...who knows though.

^ Bah, cruiser should be Texas and they don't even have to come up with a ship's motto. ![]()

Anyone who lives in New York knows how tough and diverse New York can be...your size jokes have nothing on us.
Plus, the motto would be "move fast or get outta the way."

Neutral name that still sounds like something would be best. Tempest, for example, started to sound pretty good in no time after hearing about that possibility.
How about "Love Boat" with all those romances?

USS Flag, because I didn't come from a rich enough family to have it as a kid.
The Monte Cristo(the deep fried sandwich not the count) because its 4,000 calories of pure awesome.
Mr. Toads Wild Ride(because well lets face it, its an awesome ride)
Star Tours(see above)
3 our of 4 of these I will be experiencing oct 8th and I'll want them again for the game.
The Shepard, because failure apparently is an option.

Spruce Goose.
In all seriousness, though, I would prefer if it was not something too on the nose, like Trailblazer or BoldGoerToTheBeyond. The Tempest is fine, but only so long as it features a radio station that airs Shakespeare plays 24/7. Gah, I did use the word "serious" above, didnt I? Fine.
The Tempest sounds fine, it sounds serviceable if a bit, I dunno, stock. As others have pointed out, there is a good chance it could follow Alliance naming conventions (seeing as the whole N7 thing is being pushed front and center). Personally, I always found those boring. I mean, yes, they make sense, given the context, honoring momentous moments in human history and all that, but then you have the Asari and something so stupidly epic, so gloriously grandiose and unapologetic as Destiny Ascension. DESTINY. ASCENSION. Or look at Halo - I never played it, but I know that it features a ship called the Pillar of Autumn. What does that even mean? Whether it is explained in the games in any way or not, it just sounds so cool. And yes, I am fully aware of the fact that big, epic names only work so long as your ship is also big and possibly sporting some features of epicness. BUT you can take that approach to naming conventions and apply it to a smaller vessel. Just - come on, have some fun with it! So here are a few ship names I put forth for you guys to look at, possibly laugh at, and most definitely rip to shreds:
- Random Act of Violence
- Untrustworthy
- White Lie
- Death From Above
- Sandee (awww. Actually, that is short for "Search and Destroy")
Or, if it is a purely exploration vessel with few to no offensive capabilities (though I am sure more than few people will still end up being thoroughly offended), I present to you the following:
- Directionally Challenged
